Second Quarter News February 2024
Message from Mrs. Jewell and Mrs. Pecora
Hello Ridge-Brook Families,
We are over half way through the academic school year! When we returned from Winter Break we completed our Winter benchmark testing. This is where we see how our students are learning and growing. We do this testing three times within the school year. Results of the Winter benchmark tests should have come home in a family report via your child's classroom teacher. Please feel free to reach out to your child's teacher(s) if you have any questions or concerns about your child's progress.
Your continued support of your child's learning is truly appreciated and we look forward to continuing to see our student grow and thrive! We truly could not do this without you!
🎉 Look at all these kids who have received a Positive Office Referral!🏆
We are working hard to recognize the students who make great choices at school! Don't worry if you get a call from the Principal or Dean, it may be to celebrate what a great dolphin they are by demonstrating Respectful, Responsible and Ready behavior!

PBIS Information
Our students continue to earn Dolphin Dollars by being Respectful, Responsible, and Ready. Each month they have an opportunity to spend those Dolphin Dollars from our Dolphin Store. Students have a variety of ways to shop. Some are shopping on our online store, some shop from an order form, and some classes have the shopping cart visit their classroom.
We had a blast at our first PBIS Celebration! Students danced to some great music and received a popsicle treat that was provided by our local Kiwanis.

We are excited to announce that Ridge-Brook Title will be kicking off a
March Madness Reading Challenge starting March 4 th – March 25th.
How to choose the appropriate book for your child:
Use the five-finger rule. Open the book to any page and ask your child to read. Put up a finger every time your child does not know a word. If you have put up more than five fingers before the end of the page, this book is too hard for your child.
Choose books that match your child’s likes and interests!
Creative ways to get your child to read:
Go to the public library once a week
Pick a designated time of the day to read with your child
Go beyond the books; try magazines, articles or newspapers
Model how to read for your child
Create a comfy reading spot for your child
Have discussions about the books you are reading with your child
Questions to ask while reading with your child:
What kind of person is the character?
Where does the story take place?
What do you think will happen next in the story?
What is the main idea?
What is one thing you learned?
What pictures did you find most interesting?
What other questions do you have about the story?
10-15 minutes is plenty of time for a beginning reader
15-20 minutes should be spent for an intermediate-level reader.
Reading should be done every night!

State Testing is right around the corner. Every day your child is at school they are preparing for the State Test. Why, because the State Tests are aligned to the Ohio Learning Standards that are being taught daily in the classroom. Additionally, students have started to complete some of their writing assignments by typing them in Google Documents to help improve their typing skills. Your child's teacher is also spending time going over previously released test questions so that students can become familiar with how test questions are formatted on the State Test.
Test anxiety is a real thing that many students experience when preparing to take a high-stakes test. Here are a few tips that you can implement to help reduce some of the anxiety and prepare your child for a successful test day.
Required OST Testing Dates for 3rd and 4th grade students:
3rd Grade: 4th Grade:
ELA Part 1. April 18th ELA Part 1: April 22nd
ELA Part 2. April 19th ELA Part 2. April 23rd
Math Part 1 May 1st Math Part 1. April 29th
Math Part 2 May 2nd Math Part 2. April 30th
Testing Tips for Parents
1. Make sure your child gets plenty of rest the night before the test.
2. On the morning of the test, your child needs to get up in plenty of time so he/she won't feel rushed.
3. Feed your child a good breakfast. Research shows that children do better on tests if they have had a good breakfast.
4. Do as much as you can to make your child feel comfortable. Try not to say things to make him/her feel more nervous.
5. Reassure your child that no matter the outcome of the test you will still love him/her. Encourage them to simply do their best.
6. Take an active role in your child's education throughout the school year. Let your child know you are interested in his/her learning by taking part in the entire process.
7. Give your child praise even if he or she didn't do well on the test.
Please remember that.....
- State Tests are ultimately intended to test what students have learned in class, which is why good attendance is critical.
- You can find the practice tests here.

Ridge-Brook Student Council
Thank you so much to everyone who purchased Candy Grams and Smencils! The students had so much fun buying them for their friends and family! Due to your generosity, we were able to donate $244.67. The student council members decided that they would like the money to be donated to help cancer patients. We are very fortunate to have wonderful families like you!

Attendance Procedures
If your child is going to be absent, please call the office at 440-885-2347 no later than 9:50 am. If the absence requires a doctor's visit, please provide a doctor’s note when they return to school. Daily student attendance is a vital component of student academic success. With the requirements of House Bill 410, the state of Ohio requires each school district to communicate with families when a child is considered chronically absent.

Cold Weather Reminder 🥶
Students will be going outside for recess as long as the wind chill is above 20 degrees. Please remind your child to wear their coat, hat, gloves, and scarf. Previous illness is not an excuse to stay indoors for recess. Only children who have a doctor's excuse will be permitted to stay inside. Please make sure to label all of your child's items. Typically, we have a lot of items in the lost and found that have no names and we are unable to determine who they belong to. Thank you.
