Dear Valley View Parents and Families,

Thank you for your support and understanding as we successfully got through the surge of COVID cases in January and early February. Our student absence rate rarely rose above 10%. Without your partnership and understanding, we wouldn’t have been able to keep as many students and staff members at school. Now that we are past the surge of COVID-19 cases, we have started to bring in-school events back to Valley View Middle School.

The first in-person event that we are bringing back are our in-person registration events. The registration process for our current 8th graders is mostly complete. Registration for our current 7th graders will begin at the end of the week. In addition to registration, changes in safety requirements, and conferences are also things to watch for in March.

2022-2023 - Registration for incoming 9th grade students: The registration for high school classes for our current 8th grade students started in February. There is only one part of the registration left before online registration in Skyward/Family Access closes.

• March 1 - High school registration day 2 (at Valley View Middle School): Counselors from Glacier Peak High School will return to Valley View Middle School and confirm that all students are correctly registered for their classes. The counselors will meet with students who have done their registration incorrectly and fix any errors.

2022-2023 - Registration for upcoming 8th grade students:

• March 4 - Counselor visits to science classes: Our counselors will be visiting our 7th grade science classes to explain the process for online registration for registration on Skyward/Family Access.
• Online registration will open at 2 p.m. on March 4 and close on March 16 at 10 p.m.

2022-2023 - Registration for incoming 7th grade students:

• March 7 (Seattle Hill Elementary), March 14 (Cathcart Elementary), March 16 (Little Cedars Elementary, Totem Falls Elementary) - Valley View Middle School counselors will be visiting each elementary school. They will talk to current 6th grade students about the registration process and basic information about being a 7th grade student at Valley View Middle School.
• March 17 - Valley View Information Night (6:30-7:30 p.m.) - Current 6th grade parents from Valley View Middle School feeder schools are invited to attend an informational night for students in the gym. Information about registering for classes, academic programs, and extra-curricular programs will be included. After the presentation, parents and students can take a self-guided tour of the building. This is an event for parents/guardians and incoming 7th grade students. Please help us continue to keep everyone safe and leave siblings at home. Those who have a student in the resource room or life skills program will receive an invitation for a meeting at 6 p.m. (before the main session) with the school's special education staff. The main session (6:30-7 p.m.) will be livestreamed for those who are unable to attend in person.
• Online registration will open March 17 at 8 p.m. and close on March 28 at 10 p.m.

Conferences: Spring conferences will be held at the end of the month. We will have Zoom times available for each teacher on March 29 and March 30. There will be two sessions of in-person conferences available on Thursday, March 31. Sign-ups for timeslots for the Zoom conferences will be made available through Skyward the week prior. More communications will be coming up about conferences as we get closer to the end of the month.

On Monday, February 28 Governor Inslee announced that with declining case rates and hospitalizations across the west, Washington, California and Oregon have moved together to update their face covering/masking guidance. Beginning March 12, Washington and the other two states will be adopting new indoor face covering/mask policies and move to make face coverings/masks optional in schools.

The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and the Washington Department of Health (DOH) are currently updating their K-12 guidance and have noted it will be available to school districts during the week of March 7. That guidance may include additional adjustments to other COVID-19 parameters in schools, such as social distancing, etc. Until we receive these documents and further clarification, we are asking for patience and cooperation as we navigate these changes and their impact on our operations and safety protocols.

This means beginning Monday, March 14, face coverings/masks will become optional in our school buildings and on school buses. Until that time, face coverings/masks will continue to be required for all students, staff and visitors in all Snohomish School District buildings and on buses. Please take this time to talk with your family and decide if wearing a face covering/mask to school is right for your child. As of March 14, students will have the choice to wear a mask at school, with the expectation that others’ choices will be respected. Our schools and district will be supportive of everyone’s personal decision.

• We are offering personal choice with the expectation that individual choices are respected.
• One should not make assumptions regarding someone’s beliefs or health status, nor should they comment on them.
• Our district will not tolerate bullying of any kind for those who choose to continue or discontinue wearing face coverings/masks.
• We encourage those who may express any anxiety, to please reach out to their school principal or counselors for additional support as needed.

March Cultural Awareness and Recognitions: Women’s History, Irish-American Heritage and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

In the Snohomish School District and community, we honor and recognize our diversity. Please join with us this March as we acknowledge Women’s History, Irish-American Heritage and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. As a reminder, though these months may be designated as times for specific recognitions, we encourage honor and recognition of our culture and diversity throughout the year.

Women’s History Month began as a national recognition in 1982 as “Women’s History Week”. The recognition grew from a weeklong celebration started by a school district in Sonoma, California. In 1987, after a petition from the National Women’s History Project, Congress designated March as Women’s History Month. Each year the President delivers a proclamation celebrating the contributions women have made over the course of American history.

Each year the National Women’s History Alliance designates a theme for Women’s History Month. For 2022, the theme is “Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope”. The theme serves both as a tribute to the work of caregivers during the pandemic and the myriad of ways women of all cultures have provided healing and hope throughout history. Similarly, the President delivers a proclamation recognizing the contributions of Irish-Americans during the month of March. The timing was originally selected to coincide with St. Patrick’s Day, an Irish national holiday celebrated on March 17th.

According to history.com, the first celebration of St. Patrick on the American continent happened as early as 1600 in St. Augustine, Florida. Some of the traditions associated with the holiday are American in origin. In Ireland, ham and cabbage were consumed during celebrations, while corned beef which was a less expensive substitute became a staple of Irish Americans living in slums in lower Manhattan.

March is also a time designated for awareness around developmental disabilities. According to the CDC, one in six or approximately 17% of children have one or more developmental disabilities. These include ADHD, autism, cerebral palsy, hearing loss, intellectual disability, vision impairment, and others. Developmental disabilities occur across all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups and are not always clearly visible. Students who plan on attending an after school sporting event must go home and then return for the event at 4:00 pm. We do not have a supervised location for students to wait from 2:10-4 p.m. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Students planning on turning out for sports need to do the following:

• Complete a sports physical

  • Turn it in to Mrs. Walker in the main office

  • Please make sure the physician completes their portion and signs it

  • Physicals are good for 24 months from date of exam

• Complete online packet through RankOne Sports - See link below

• Purchase an ASB card

• Pay the $50 per sport participation fee per sport after tryouts and before the first game

  • There is a maximum $100 per year, per student

  • Athletic fees can be waived for students on free and reduced lunch – please provide a copy of the free/reduced lunch letter to Mrs. Dalrymple

  • Refunds will not be provided after the first contest

Sign ups will be located outside of the main office beginning March 21.

Because our water fountains are closed we have water bottle filling stations instead. Please send your child with a reusable water bottle daily. They may even want to check the lost and found if they are missing theirs. Thank you!

For families who requested their Spirit Wear orders be sent to the school, we regret that we are not able to do school delivery this year. These orders should be available for pick-up at the Streamline building at 1910 Bickford Ave. Suite H, Snohomish. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes!
