Nance Parents & Family Newsletter
November 2024
Principal's Update
Now that we are into November, the days are shorter, the leaves are falling, and temperatures are much more crisp. We know that the holidays are on the horizon which means that school calendars and schedules can be somewhat irregular. We appreciate your support with having your child at school, on time, each and every day so that they can experience a productive day of learning. We appreciate your support!
We hope you enjoyed our events during the month of October including Parent Conferences and the Literacy Night/Trunk or Treat celebration! Thank you to our Nance staff who takes the time to prepare such wonderful events for our community.
Don't forget-- Our Double Good Fundraiser goes live on Tuesday, November 5th and stays online through Saturday, November 9th! The information to create an account is below. Just a reminder that this is a fully online, cashless fundraiser! Please remember that no door-to-door sales are allowed.
Additionally, there are three important dates on the SLPS calendar that impact students this month:
- There will be no school for students on Tuesday, November 5th for Election Day.
- There will be no school for students on Monday, November 11th for Veterans' Day.
- There will be no school for students and all SLPS schools will be closed from Monday, November 25th- Friday, November 29th in observance of Thanksgiving break.

Ms. Worley's Art Corner
Students have been working hard creating art using various materials and tools to explore personal interests, questions, and curiosity. They will be able to combine ideas to generate an innovative idea for art making. We will be using watercolors, tempera paints, oil pastels, paper mache, and much more! We are creating beautiful works of art while being responsible and respectful of ourselves, our peers, and our materials - while learning about amazing art from around the world!

Mr. Taylor's PE Corner
November is here and fall is in full swing. During physical education class, students will focus on demonstrating competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns and developing knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a health enhancing level of fitness. We will accomplish these PE standards by participating in a variety of aerobic fitness activities, some guided movements and low organized games.
Games such as Star Wars, Box Ball, Freeze Tag, Catch-5 and the recreational game Ramp Shot (grades 4-6) provides an opportunity for students to meet the designated PE standards. The games and activities are designed to promote physical fitness, critical thinking, problem-solving skills and appropriate social behavior. Personal responsibility in a physically active setting will continue to be an expectation of all students during class time.
Proper PE attire is highly recommended, tennis shoes and non-restrictive clothing enhances a student’s ability to perform without limitations. It is recommended that students participate in at least 60 minutes of daily physical activity. Be active, be safe and enjoy getting physically fit. Enjoy the beautiful color that this time of year brings.

Academics Corner
Academic Competitions
In the month of October students participated in a variety of academic competitions including Book Battles, Knights of the Round Table, and the Scripps Spelling Bee grade level competitions. These activities are intended to give students opportunities to apply their learning in new contexts.
Writing Prompts
One of our goals for our students this year is to improve their writing through daily practice. This year we have introduced several new tools including writing prompt journals, writing process folders, and weekly curriculum prompts to help students develop these important skills. We need your help at home to encourage students to write! Just like reading, students need practice and experience to develop strong writing habits.
One way to develop writing skills is to practice using creative writing prompts. There are many sources of writing prompts available online- visit the website below as a starting point for ideas that you can use to support our students with developing their writing skills at home! You can also use these prompts to spark discussions about topics of interest with your family.
Knights Book Club- November & December
For the months of November and December we are proud to offer two selections as part of the Nance Knights Book Club program!
All students in grades Pre-K through 2nd are receiving a copy of My Brother Charlie. Written by Holly Robinson Peete and her daughter, Ryan Elizabeth Peete, and beautifully illustrated by Shane W. Evans, this touching story is told from the perspective of Callie, a young girl whose twin brother, Charlie, has autism. Callie shares her love and admiration for Charlie while also explaining the challenges he faces. Through Callie’s voice, we see how Charlie’s autism affects his family and friends, and how they all come together to support and love him. My Brother Charlie is a heartwarming tale that teaches children about acceptance, empathy, and the beauty of diversity.
Students in 3rd-6th grade will receive a copy of The Astounding Broccoli Boy. Written by Frank Cottrell Boyce, this humorous and action-packed story follows Rory, a seemingly average boy who suddenly turns bright green after an incident at school. He soon finds himself befriending another green boy, and together they explore what it means to be different while trying to solve the mystery behind their strange transformation. As they journey through thrilling adventures, Rory discovers that being "green" may be more powerful than he ever imagined. The Astounding Broccoli Boy is a quirky and delightful novel that encourages kids to embrace their individuality and see the extraordinary in themselves.
Here are some activities you can complete with your child when you read this month’s Nance Knights Book Club books:
Discuss Emotions – Ask your child how the characters feel in different parts of the story. How would they feel in similar situations?
Role-Playing – Act out scenes from the books, such as Callie explaining Charlie’s behavior or Rory’s discovery of his powers. This helps bring the stories to life and builds understanding.
Research Together – Look up more information about autism or superhero abilities in nature and science. This can lead to exciting family projects.
Family Journals – Encourage your child to write or draw their thoughts about the stories. They can create their own journal like Rory or reflect on a sibling relationship like Callie.
Book-Themed Art – Create drawings or crafts inspired by the characters’ unique traits (e.g., a picture of Charlie’s favorite activity or a broccoli-themed superhero cape).
The 100 Book Challenge is Back!
Encourage your students to read every night and keep up with your reading log! Students will receive a prize after they complete their reading log with ten books read!
Weekly Reflections & Friday Huddles
At the end of the day each Friday, Nance students take time to reflect on what they have learned in the past week. Please ask your students to share their learning reflection from the week with you!
