The Spirit of Homecoming + Parade and Game
Homecoming is not just about returning to a place, but about feeling the embrace of a community.
We celebrated the entire Shorian Nation by showering Lake Shore Public Schools with Homecoming love. It was clear that you're a fan of our school district.
As Homecoming festivities come to a close, the school days will return to normal on Monday. Spirit days, hall decorating, assembly, floats, court crowning, and the Homecoming game will always be the most memorable moments of the week.
Seniors brought home the Shorian Shield, showing the most school spirit!
2023 Homecoming King Michael Livi (not present) and Queen Ella Mainhardt passed their crowns to Seniors Stewart Gibson and Caitlyn Larson winners of the 2024 titles Homecoming King and Queen. The pair would like to thank their classmates and friends for the constant support and votes along with choosing them to represent their class as role models and outstanding students.
The 2024 Marching Shorians performed side-by-side with the Alumni Band again to Land of Make Believe from the 2011 show, the Bill (Chase) and Chuck (Mangione) show! Band Director Greg Alter wrote, "I’m honored to be playing such an awesome chart with alumni from varying graduating classes. This chart brings back a ton of memories of my time as a student in the LSHS band program."
Before we end this party, let's wish our students some fun at our Homecoming dance. While several Shorians are talented break dancers and ballerinas, others enjoy the dance party as another opportunity to spend time with friends.
We enjoy reliving, through the stories told by these pictures, and look forward to Homecoming 2025.
Bonus: An example of Other People Matter was provided over the Summer that started with a recognition post on Facebook's Saint Clair Shores Residents Page. With so much deserving hype over Taylor Rychel's "eager to help" efforts, this local hero was featured in the Where Your Voice Matters section for WXYZ. A Lake Shore High School Class of 2021 graduate, Taylor is an exceptional Shorian who exemplifies what it means to serve others, using all 24 character strengths as his road map. Tonight we recognized Taylor by naming him an Honorary Captain and with gifts on behalf of Dominic Frisina and his Positivity Project team at the Homecoming game!
Homecoming Court and Assembly
It's a red carpet rollout. Congratulations to the following students who have the honor of representing their class as members of our 2024 Homecoming Court. Oftentimes, these students were nominated because of their Other People Matter mindset.
Freshmen
-Jaxon Hanes and Makiya Withers
Sophomores
-James Shovan and Ella Pascoe
Juniors
-Jacob Gross and Lily Wallace
Senior King Candidates
-Connor Carney, Stewart Gibson, Josh Miller
Senior Queen Candidates
-Brook Atkinson, Caitlyn Larson, Maris Rutledge
Check out their "kingdoms," decorated so thoughtfully as part of our 101st Homecoming celebration!
In addition, LSECC named James L. and Emma D. as their Prince and Princess!
Every year, with exception of the seniors, one male and one female from each grade are chosen to represent their grade on Homecoming Court. These students stand out as role models and are chosen by their own student body. However, these outstanding individuals do not have the chance to win the title of “Queen” or “King” of court; three males and three females from the senior class are chosen to compete for the throne.
Smiles and laughter was the goal and it was a rather simple objective during our pep assembly.
Pep assemblies are a classic staple in everyone's high school experience. There were cheer routines, musical performances, and of course, games. Games in this year’s Homecoming pep assembly included Tug of War, Dodgeball, Basketball Musical Chairs, and Relay Race which kept the school spirit high and involved every class.
Tug of War pit two grades against each other in a test of strength. Dodgeball is a team sport where players try to hit their opponents with balls while avoiding being hit themselves. A game of Musical Chairs sparked competition causing students to run around to popular songs in the attempt to sit in the final chair. In the Relay Race, students used a bat, mattress, hula hoop, ring toss, and bubble pop for the win!
To pump up energy, student spectators cheered for their peers in the stands. The event was the perfect way to lead up to the game and dance! We don’t want to rub it in, but the staff won the tug of war contest again!

Positivity Project
P2 Calendar
Under the guiding principles of our districtwide initiative, the Positivity Project, the #PositivityInAction mindset is our top priority. Because of our goal to inspire students to build positive relationships and become their best selves, we invite you to follow this Positivity Project Calendar. Note: We have made a few changes to this calendar; All adjustments are located on our District Events Calendar.
This calendar outlines all 24 character strengths, 1 highlighted per week. Our teachers create engaging and impactful lessons — differentiated by grade-level — and share through presentations, student recognitions, classroom discussions, and building-specific displays.
People with the character strength of open-mindedness like to consider new ideas and try new things. They examine things from all sides and don’t jump to conclusions.
Being a high school exchange student can be an exciting and transformative experience! It offers the chance to immerse yourself in a new culture, learn a new language, and make lifelong friends.
Meet Irene Ferragut Delgado, Lake Shore High School exchange student from Palma, Spain. Palma is a resort city and capital of the Spanish island of Mallorca, in the western Mediterranean. It is known for its sun and beach tourism. So why would Irene want to take a 1-year hiatus from such a beautiful town? She wanted to explore the world while improving her English.
Her sister Lucia was a driving force behind the decision. She was an exchange student in a neighboring district and returned to her family in Spain with incredibly positive stories. After a month underway, Irene is already making memories, too.
Irene plays JV Volleyball and plans to tryout for the basketball team. She has made many incredible friendships and the bond created by her host family, Brian and Sarah Blattert, is something truly special. They've explored downtown Detroit, watched a Tigers game, and went camping on Harsens Island. When asked which experience has been her favorite thus far, she couldn't decide. She responded with, "I loved them all." She did mention that she enjoys being a spectator and part of the Shipyard at Lake Shore sporting events. It is an electrifying feeling that only the Shorian Nation can provide.
In her spare time, Irene enjoys reading and being outside. She uses WhatsApp to communicate with her family. We are certain that Dad Rafa, Mom Silvia, Sister Lucia, and Twin Brothers Jorge and Alvaro miss her incredibly, but feel so fortunate to have her with us.
Whether it’s adapting to a new school system, navigating social dynamics, or just exploring a different country, Irene is the perfect example of someone who is unafraid to say yes to an amazing opportunity, backed by the character strength of open-mindedness. We also want to welcome two additional exchange students, Naveenaa Paramaguru from India and Alhasan GarGer from Libya!
People with the OPM of being present like to fully enjoy the moment that their in. It is in the moment when they are calm on what they're doing without thinking about anything else.
Across our community, what unites all of us is that providing educational excellence to our children is nonnegotiable. Our Shorian Nation recognizes the value of our Lake Shore students, volunteers, administrators, teachers and staff members and the synergy and learning that occur in our district.
There are many stories that remain untold. There are “behind the scenes” people that deserve to be recognized and saluted.
Our ability to put together a successful Homecoming is tied directly to the behind-the-scenes people who disguise themselves in the shadows, never asking for credit, but instead committed to the idea that #OtherPeopleMatter.
- It is our head Varsity Football coach, James Rogers, and his team of 30 players who have spent countless hours this Summer and Fall practicing for game day.
- It is our Student Congress advisor, Rob Couck, and team of 30 Leadership students who have created the plan and action steps for spirit days and competitions, the parade, halftime homecoming court announcements, and tallying the winner of our Shorian Shield tradition.
- It is our Shipyard and cheer teams who lift us up with their encouragement through music and movement. Our applause is louder because their spirit is infectious.
- It is our Lake Shore Marching band under the direction of Greg Alter that put in hours of practice to provide the halftime entertainment and encourage and support the football players.
- It is our team of Athletic Booster volunteers who serve you delicious snacks at our concession stand.
- It is our team of custodians who create a pristine stadium environment for our spectators.
- It is our Food Service staff who put together a delicious meal for our employees and alumni.
- It is our city of Saint Clair Shores Police Department who support us as they guide traffic and keep our community safe.
- It is our bus drivers who provided transportation to and from Kennedy Middle School to Lake Shore High School.
- It is our Athletic Department team of Athletic Coordinator Rich Bowers and Athletic Secretary Robin Gill who coordinate presale tickets, apparel sales, and the game itself.
- It is our Video Productions team of several students to create, edit, and produce video clips to capture the moment. It is also our partner Stewart Fine Portraits that shares his beautiful photos with us.
- It is our student body, a collective group of 4 classes, who decorated their high school hallways using fun color-schemes and themes. The inside of our school should be featured on HGTV with its unconventional design methods and charm.
- It is our families who donate trailers, convertibles, their homes, and their help to create a parade for our community.
Looking forward, we are excited to celebrate INTEGRITY (10-14-18) and CREATIVITY (10/21-25).
Stay Safe
OK2SAY Student Safety Program
See something? Say something.
OK2SAY is the student safety program which allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at school students, school employees, and schools. It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
Anyone can report tips on criminal activities or potential harm directed at students, school employees, or schools. Tips can be submitted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
While continually evolving and reviewed annually, on this Safety and Security webpage you will find a list of recent and current safety measures implemented by Lake Shore Public Schools to provide the safest environment for our students and staff.
Inspiration
Walk & Roll to School Day + Fun Run Success
We have a simple math problem for you. How many collective miles did Masonic Heights Elementary students walk from St. Margaret Church to the school?
National Walk & Roll to School Day (WR2SD) is an international event celebrated each October. Started in 1997 by the Partnership for a Walkable America, WR2SD has grown to an international event that takes place in over 40 countries worldwide. Michigan is once again joining states across the nation and countries across the globe to promote walking and rolling to school.
The 28th annual WR2SD event is being promoted in Michigan by Safe Routes to School (SRTS) at Michigan Fitness Foundation (MFF), a federally legislated program administered by Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).
SRTS programs are designed to make it safe, convenient, and fun for children and their families to walk, roll, and bike to school. As a component of SRTS programming, the event emphasizes the importance of pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, and concern for the environment. When routes are safe, walking, rolling, or biking to and from school is an easy way to commute and get the regular physical activity children need for good health. Safe Routes to School initiatives help ease traffic jams, reduce air pollution, and unite neighborhoods.
Masonic Heights Elementary students participated in the WR2SD by walking through Tangletown to school. Walking is one of the best forms of exercise. The goal of this day is to raise awareness and support for the health, community and environmental benefits of regularly walking or biking to school.
Thank you, Saint Clair Shores Police and Fire Departments, for your presence at this event. We also appreciate several members of our Cheerleaders for leading the way.
The answer? If all 466 students participated in the 1.2 mile walk, it would total over 559 miles!
Bonus: Congratulations to Violet Elementary for raising $26,527+ at their annual Fun Run: https://app.99pledges.com/fund/2024colorr2
All-Stars love learning and that prioritizes building character! They teach students to be safe, trustworthy, and respectful in all aspects of their life. The dedicated staff and administrators give 100% to make students feel good about the place they call their school. They are blessed to have the incredible support of families and the surrounding community!
Donations help the PTO fund field trips, assemblies, teacher stipends, new playground equipment, family events, and much more!
Fire Safety and Law Enforcement
A fundamental part of every community is fire safety and law enforcement.
The St. Clair Shores Fire Department shared safety tips with our elementary students to highlight #FirePreventionWeek. Although calling 911 is a natural first instinct when you hear the fire alarm or see a fire, our students learned that getting out of the house is most important. Firefighters like Lieutenant Cook and Driver Engineer Brian from Station 3 are trained to help you in emergency, making sure you are safe, and providing care.
This year’s campaign, Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work For You!, strives to educate everyone about the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home. In this webinar you will learn the WHY behind the campaign’s key calls to action: INSTALL, TEST, and REPLACE. Subject matter experts will share new smoke alarm technology updates, best practices, and how to plan and implement a successful FPW campaign using NFPA resources: https://www.nfpa.org/en/Videos/2024-Fire-Prevention-Week
Our SRO Detective Glen Hartman works with Lake Shore Public Schools for the next 4 years to keep students and staff safe. Detective Hartman has been with the police department for 8.5 years.
Detective Hartman works closely with administration to ensure safety in the buildings. He is present in both the middle school and high school multiple days a week, with visits to the elementary schools periodically. His favorite part of the job is the positive interactions with citizens and the community. Outside of work, he enjoys hiking and running. Detective Hartman and his wife Katie have a 3-year-old son named Lucas, a 2 month son called Elliott, and a Black Lab mix named Luna.
Thank you for the education on both safety and the career itself while giving brave Kindergarten students from Masonic Heights Elementary the ability to see a close-up of a fire truck and the need to feel safe in our buildings because of the presence of Detective Glen Hartman!
Bonus: Sue Crowe at the State Farm on Harper donated a ton of really cool fire safety books and information to our 1st graders at Violet Elementary!
Innovation
Professional Development
Learning is essential to our growth and an indispensable tool for the Shorian Nation.
Lake Shore Public Schools staff continues to use Professional Development days as an important time to strengthen our skills as professionals and adapt to the ever changing learning, cultural, and social-emotional needs of our children. From the most effective and innovative instructional strategies to school safety and student well-being matters, investing this time today and future calendar dates of 11/1, 1/6, 2/18, and 4/21 is a key to the on-going high level of success for our students.
Elementary sessions focused on what a number sense routine is and how it might connect to my curriculum materials; thinking deeply about recording student thinking in a way that supports student understanding; explaining how a number sense routine relates to the Early Math Essentials and state standards. All teachers also built a data-informed response to student learning and achievement using i-ready benchmark assessment reports to create small groups and personalized instruction.
Secondary teachers were provided with information to understand the requirements and support students with 504 and IEPs, including child study process and Assistive Technology. This overview for supporting students with disabilities helped our staff to learn how the Read&Write app can assist students with literacy support; learn how students can be more independent in their education; The Child Study Process (KMS Child Study Hub); FERPA and Documentation; understand the IEP; roles of Case Managers and Service Providers; Accommodations vs. Modifications; easy ways to accommodate students with disabilities; Assistive Technology; natural AI human text to speech reader.
Our community can expect 180 days of high-quality instruction in a safe environment and supported by Lake Shore teachers in which high, clear expectations and positive relationships are fostered and active learning is promoted.
And perhaps the coolest part of the day? Our Great Start Readiness Program preschoolers visited Deneweth's Garden Center to learn about the life cycle of a pumpkin and to learn if pumpkins sink or float. These 4-year-olds also participated in their first day of Fall Fun Fest with a corn maze, straw mound climb, 7 minute spooky train ride, pumpkin decorating, carnival-type games, inflatable haunted house, and cider and donuts!
Store Manager Kathy Sziisz loved having our GSRP students visit! She said, "It was an exciting learning experience for everyone. The kids had so much fun!" The Fall Fun Fest has been a part of Deneweth's for over 20 years. To learn more, visit https://deneweths.com/pages/fun-fest.
Bonus: Lake Shore Public Schools received a generous donation from St. Clair Shores' Fisher Dynamics. Company spokesperson, Joshua Ring, contacted LSPS to share 30 school supply gift bags filled to the brim with folders, notebooks, pens, highlighters, etc.
Not only have the important supplies relieved a burden for some Kennedy Middle School and Lake Shore High School families, but they also helped in the classrooms bringing smiles all around. Thank you Fisher Dynamics!
Celebration
MSBOA Marching Festival
Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.
We celebrate our Marching Shorians, under the direction of Greg Alter, who received a Division I Superior performance rating at the MSBOA Marching Festival, a consistent rating for over 19 years.
MSBOA Marching Bands performed a show at L'anse Creuse High School North and were judged in three categories: Music, Marching and General Effect. Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association has specific criteria and rubrics for the adjudication. A Band must receive a final rating in two of the three categories to receive an overall rating of Division I.
Drum Majors Simon Kozak, Alexis Gress, Jacob Barker, and Tyler Pettway are an instrumental part of the band, giving direction, maintaining, order and appearance, and leading the way! For the first time ever, 8th graders from Kennedy Middle School participated as part of the Lake Shore High School Marching Band! That is a big deal!
Enjoy this video featuring the Marching Band’s performance from Into the Shadows: https://twitter.com/.../status/1844168953293398440/video/1
The Shorian Marching Band is a musical marching unit that is a co-curricular ensemble that rehearses outside the school day. The prerequisite for the Marching Band class is concurrent enrollment in the either the Symphonic Band or Wind Ensemble. The ensemble consists of woodwinds, brass, percussion, and a color guard. Membership requires dedication and maximum effort in all aspects of marching, playing, rehearsal, and performance.
Thank you Greg Alter who is a 2015 graduate of Lake Shore High School; His passion for Band dates back to his 4 years spent playing Baritone Sax in the marching band as well as being involved in Jazz Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Ensemble.
He wrote, "I am extremely proud of the accomplishments the 2024-25 Marching Shorians have achieved already this year! Their hard work has continued to show in the product they have on the field. Accepting the position in LSPS and coming home was the best decision I could have ever made."
Manufacturing Day
Lake Shore High School partnered with Best Tool & Engineering and Drake Enterprises, Inc. to help build career interest through MFG Day.
Best Tool & Engineering was founded in 1991. Joe Cherluck, current president, bought the company Best Tool & Mold and renamed it to reflect the added engineering services. Their company has been family operated for most of its life. Over 10 family members have worked at Best Tool since 1991. With this family operated atmosphere, we believe it has helped the company have a deeper relationship with it’s clientele. They're a custom plastic component supplier with in-house design and build of plastic injection molds, vibration & hot plate welding tools, and fixtures.
Now in his 3rd year of Manufacturing Day participation, Cherluck believes in the importance of encouraging students to pursue careers in this field. He said, "We are not fully automated. We depend on good people working here."
Drake Enterprises, Inc. was founded in 1952 by Benny Stemple and is now located in Clinton Township, Michigan. Beginning as a small 4 man operation, Benny never imagined his dreams and ambitions would lead to an 80,000 square foot facility with more than 100 employees. In 1964, Richard & Lee Stemple joined their father and today all Drake employees continue to strive in the competitive manufacturing environment with a vast variety of manufacturing equipment and quality products.
Part of a national initiative, 22 students from Mr. Winters' Building Renovations and Ms. Miller's Introduction to Architecture, CAD, and Digital Design classes learned about possible career paths to promote interest in skilled manufacturing jobs. After welcome presentations, different team members touched base about what their respective departments do by giving tours. Tours included Design/Engineering, CNC Operator/Programmer, Toolmaker/Mold-Maker, Injection Mold Process Tech., Quality Control, Sales, and Owner/CEO.
Ms. May and Ms. Stanley's Cross-Curricular Senior English and Mathematics classes got to experience this event for the very first time. Teacher Ms. Stanley said, “Our students benefited from Manufacturing Day as most of our students are not college bound and tend to explore the trades more. We explore the transition from high school to college through these field trips and experiences.”
Thanks to local sponsors, teachers Mr. Winters and Ms. Miller, Career & Technical Education Coordinator Todd Stevens, students each received an incredible experience. MFG Day empowers manufacturers to come together to address their collective challenges so they can help their communities and future generations thrive.

National Custodian Appreciation Day
Lake Shore Public Schools is giving our Maintenance and Operations staff a shoutout in celebration of National Custodian Appreciation Day!
They often begin their shift before we arrive and stay long after we leave and especially this year. Bond work has created countless new projects and tight deadlines. They adapted to a long list of new installations and furniture moves, always on their feet to cause cleanliness and order everywhere.
Director of Operations & Maintenance Wayne Satterfield for Lake Shore Public Schools performs administrative and supervisory work related to all bond projects, acting as a liaison between LSPS and contractors. Wayne also inspects work performed by our own custodial and maintenance employees as well as private contractors to insure proper cleaning, maintenance, repair, and groundskeeping procedures are being followed, checks for safety and health hazards, and makes recommendations for improvements. He always does this with a smile!
Facilities Coordinator Mike Salem says the best part of his job is the sense of accomplishment. He explained, "It is that feeling of satisfaction that comes when finishing something challenging. The people who I work with are wonderful as well." Coworkers describe him as the Ultimate Community Guy, dedicated, and enthusiastic! He has served Lake Shore for 25 years!
Steve Tane has worked with Lake Shore's Maintenance and Operations for 9 years. He said, "The best part of my job is the friendliness and helpful attitude of all the people I work with and for. I enjoy the diversity of everything I do. No two days are the same!" Coworkers describe him as loyal, hardworking, and dependable.
Their commitment to your health and safety is stronger than ever. Students are more likely to succeed in academics when they attend school consistently. Our custodians are constantly cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting transportation vehicles, equipment, and buildings which includes frequently touched surfaces. They provide adequate supplies to support healthy hygiene behaviors including soap and hand sanitizer.
Mrs. Wilson's class at Rodgers Elementary surprised Mr. Craig and his team with gift baskets for a job well done. It was a thoughtful gesture; A grateful heart is the best kind to have.
Thank you, 25 Lake Shore Custodians and Maintenance and Operations staff and our student assistants, for working tirelessly and being open-minded to the new tasks that were taken on with grace.
