D93 Family Update

First, I want to say "Thank you!" to everyone who took time out of your busy schedules to vote in the bond election on Tuesday,

Even though 65.2% of voters in D93 voted to support building a new elementary school, the proposal still fell about 150 yes votes short of the 67% super-majority necessary to pass a bond.

This setback means that we will need to seriously consider other short-term alternatives to building a new school.

Even though we don't plan to make any new changes for next year, we do need to start thinking about changes for the 2024 -2025 school year. Unfortunately, most alternatives will have an adverse impact on student learning and families. Some ideas that we must evaluate include eliminating or reducing the option of all-day kindergarten classes as well as busing students away from over-capacity schools to schools that have available classrooms. With the slim margin by which the proposal failed by, the School Board is also discussing whether to propose the bond again in August or November.

The annual fifth grade bike ride was a huge success! Student from the north side of the district road their bikes to Iona on Tuesday and students from the south side rode their bikes to Iona on Wednesday. There were fun games for the kids to play once they reach the park in Iona and lunch was served. The students even received t-shirts!

We want to give a huge shoutout to our local police, public works, fire departments and volunteers for helping with the bike ride. The picture below shows students from Ucon and Fairview at a resting spot near Ririe Highway. BCSO Deputies and the Idaho State Police completely shut down the highway each year to allow students to safely cross the road.

Principal Orme made a deal with her students at Falls Valley that she would color her hair purple if they reached a lofty ISAT goal. The students blew that goal out of the water! This morning the school held a special assembly to announce the results and unveil Principal Orme's new look. You can watch the video from this event on our Instagram page.

On Wednesday, the School Board accepted the recommendation of Gene Smith as principal of Black Canyon Middle School next year. Gene joined District 93 in 2016 as an assistant principal at Hillcrest where he worked for two years. In 2018, Gene became the principal of Ammon Elementary School.

As a former middle school teacher social studies teacher, Gene is looking forward to returning to his educational roots. "I am so excited to be joining the Storm team. I can't wait to get to know the staff, students, and families of Black Canyon and look forward to serving as their principal."

Craig Miller, who has served as the principal at Black Canyon since it opened two years ago, has accepted a position in Kuna School District to be closer to family.

Chairman Chad Dance has resigned his position effective July 30, 2023 as Zone 3 Trustee. He and his wife will be moving to Island Park at the end of the summer. We are so grateful for his service and his dedication to Bonneville School District 93. We are currently taking applications for those individuals who live in Zone 3. District 93 is inviting 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students to get out and enjoy outdoor learning at Pine Basin Lodge! Activities include group games, outdoor classes, hiking, swimming, campfires, visiting Grand Teton National Park, Jackson Hole Playhouse, and more!
