Advice to Families of Seniors
Senior Seminar students from the Class of 2022 discussed how their families can support them throughout their college search and application process. Check out this week's advice!
- Unconditional support: Always offer support to your child no matter what decisions they make. Even if you don't necessarily agree, let them do what makes them happy.
- Offer to help: Offer your opinion and your knowledge and let your children know you are there to help.
Be patient: Allow time for your child to make decisions and don’t pressure them too much. Not everything is as easy as it may seem.
Consider that we are busy students: As a student, we have a lot going on, so finding time to prepare and plan for college can be difficult.
Don’t rush the process: The college process takes a lot of time and doesn’t always need to be rushed through. Give it time and allow for your child to get their most important work done.
Be in the general know: Inform yourself with the important information that you need to know before discussing college and planning with your child.
Be prepared to listen to your child: Be ready to listen. It isn't always about giving advice. Listen to what your child has to say. Sometimes we need somebody to vent to and tell what we're stressed about
Don’t try and manage your child's schedule: Don’t try to take too much control over your child’s schedule. We like to plan our own things out and trying to take too much control can make an unhealthy relationship.
Teach your child to do laundry before they go off to school: Teach us essential things to do if we don’t already know so you aren’t getting midnight calls about how to wash clothing.
Don't ask your child too many questions: Don't worry too much about everything. We know what we need to know, and asking too many questions can stress us out.

Senior Seminar Speaker
Saginaw Valley State University
If you took Dryden High School and combined it with a four year university, you get SVSU: a small school with a community that makes up for it. Saginaw Valley is definitely a lot smaller than a lot of these other universities that I have looked at, but they have a lot to make up for it.
Our speaker this week was Amber Hadley, she is definitely one of my favorite speakers so far. She seemed like a genuine and fun person and you can tell she was passionate about her work. Amber talked a lot about the college community. Just like Dryden, students have more one-on-one learning with their teachers and can reach out to any staff or even other peers with questions and can get the resources needed fast. At other, bigger, universities with class sizes that are 200 to 300 more students, you might not get that close relationship with your professors. She also brought up the fact that late in life when you need letters of recommendation, you can ask some of your professors that you have gotten close with over the years, she even did it herself. Coming from Dryden, it may be an easier transition from high school to college as you have about the same size classes and the environment we are used to.
Something I really liked about SVSU was its campus. Each dorm has its own bathroom, kitchen, and personal rooms. Amber talked about all the different restaurants they have on campus that they actually just got recently, such as Starbucks, Panda Express, Subway, and they even have GrubHub.
Amber did an amazing job with her presentation and if I personally didn’t want to get out of the small school, small-town vibes, I could 100% see myself going to Saginaw Valley. SVSU seems like an amazing place to grow your studies and especially coming from the high school version of SVSU, you will definitely fit in perfectly.

Audrey Napolitano
Audrey is a sophomore who has attended Dryden since pre-school. She's involved in Varsity XC, Varsity Sideline Cheerleading, Varsity Soccer, Varsity Track and Field, National Honor Society, Student Council, Red and Black Newspaper, and Yearbook. Along with appreciating how small Dryden is, she likes to run, compete dance, and work or volunteer in her free time. When asked about a dream career, Audrey says "I am interested in the pursuit of dermatology or something that impacts society", but she's currently undecided in a future major or profession. Good luck, Audrey!
