February 2025
Letter from the Superintendent
Dear Parents and Nanuet Community,
Welcome to the February edition of Nanuet News! This month’s Golden Spotlight shines on Miller Elementary School’s beloved U-Knighted by Reading program, where our youngest readers are all “Wonders!” Their enthusiasm for storytelling comes to life under the guidance of our wonderful Assistant Principal, Dr. Myrtelle Mehu. We hope you enjoy this glimpse into the incredible learning happening across our district as the school year continues to unfold.
As we shake off the winter chill, we look forward to a vibrant and busy spring filled with exciting opportunities for our students.
Sincerely,
Lisa Brady, Ed.D.
Superintendent
Golden Spotlight
Our Story, Our Future
The Art Department is excited to celebrate Nanuet’s participation in the Rockland Center for the Arts’ inaugural Rockland High School Student Art Show: Our Story, Our Future. “It was an opportunity to showcase 15 of our students’ artistic achievements in a gallery setting,” said Nanuet Art Director Kodi Tidd. Check out our Instagram post to see some of the works that were on display earlier this month.
Science Olympiad
Congratulations to the Nanuet High School Science Olympiad team! This month, 28 students competed at Regionals and as a team, placed 16th and 17th out of 37 schools—a testament to the countless hours of hard work and dedication these students put in. Their effort and teamwork truly showed in their results. Check out our Facebook post for pictures and more on our medalists.
World Read Aloud Day
World Read Aloud Day was February 5 - day for reading and crowns! Celebrated for more than a decade, this global effort highlights "the importance of sharing stories and brings people together through the shared connection of reading aloud." The Nanuet community marked the day with a roster of guest readers visiting classrooms across the district, including Assistant Principal Ahrvanites. Read more in our Facebook post.
Rockland Read-In
Valentine’s Day provided the perfect backdrop for the Rockland Read-In, which encourages a love of books and reading for pleasure. Sponsored by the Rockland BOCES School Library System, the event promotes literacy in county schools through reading challenges and activities. Across Nanuet, teachers set aside time throughout the day for students to read with classmates and special guests. Check out pictures from our schools, including Highview!
Black History Month
Welcome to Cooperstown! At Highview Elementary, Tim Nye’s fourth-grade class explored the history of the Negro Leagues through the Baseball Hall of Fame’s Black Baseball Initiative. Thanks to school resource kits, the museum’s civil rights history curriculum is coming to life in the classroom during Black History Month. Read more about the fun, hands-on and educational lesson.
Clarkstown PD Visit
Welcome, Clarkstown PD, to George W. Miller Elementary School! Officer John Verwoert joined School Resource Officers Frank Negri (NSHS) and Anthony Culianos (Barr) at the end of January to speak with our first graders. The visit gave our young Knights the opportunity to further their study of communities and meet the first responders who keep us safe. Check out our Instagram post.
Day 100
What’s in your 100-day collection? The 100th day of school gave George W. Miller Elementary first graders a fun opportunity to practice counting large numbers. “Ten groups of ten equals 100,” Ms. Cinque reminded her class after a read-aloud of "100th Day Worries"—the perfect book to celebrate Rockland Read-In. Using this method, students counted and proudly displayed their century of items for classmates.
Board of Education
Lobby Day
Thank you to Board Vice President Anne Byrne and member Sue Frisch for traveling to Albany earlier this month to take part in the State Capitol's annual lobbying and advocacy day. Alongside fellow Rockland School Board members, Byrne and Frisch met with several lawmakers and legislators to review the matters important to our county's educators and students.
Tenure Recipients
Congratulations to the educators who were recommended and approved for tenure during Tuesday night’s Board of Education Meeting! School administrators spoke highly of our faculty in the presence of their families and colleagues, before being presented with certificates by Board of Education President Christine Camillieri. Congratulations on this well-deserved achievement!
