Our School
OUR MONTH OF LEARNING
MATH
Students will begin Module 1 – Sums and Differences to 10 this month. Students will analyze and describe embedded numbers (to 10) using 5 groups and number bonds. We will represent put together situations with number bonds and we will count on to make totals of 6, 7 8, 9 and 10. We will also work on solving various types of math stories using drawings, equations and statements.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS
We have started our learning with our new reading curriculum this school year, Core Knowledge Language Arts - CKLA.
Skills 1
In skills, students are currently reviewing kindergarten concepts, such as handwriting/letter formation and sounds of all letters to build words. For writing and grammar, students will work on including capitalization and punctuation in sentences and understanding nouns. Later in the skills unit, we will start to read decodable stories based on the skills we have reviewed.
Knowledge 1
In knowledge, students are currently listening to Fables and Stories. We have a read aloud each day where we discuss the different fiction concepts (title, plot, characters, setting, lesson) and important vocabulary. The link below will take you to an information page about Knowledge 1 and includes conversation starters for discussing Fables and Stories at home. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1LRcQgqY7ZynHZUnZ6kS5zo03xMisDtE8/view?usp=sharing
SOCIAL STUDIES
This month, students will identify rules, rights, and responsibilities at home, at school, and in their neighborhood. We will identify and describe people important to the American Political System.
LEADER IN ME
Students will be able to describe Habits 1-8 and how they will support learning, personal development, and a positive classroom culture. We will also be able to describe ways to lead and will identify ways to contribute to the classroom, school, and household.
WAYS TO SUPPORT LEARNING AT HOME
1. Encourage reading in any way you can. Read with them and also have them read independently.
2. Treat your child as though they're an author. Encourage them to write and draw things they are interested in.
3. Make math part of everyday life. Look for numbers and patterns around the house and outside.
4. Help them continue to practice tying their shoes.
5. Help them practice respectful conversations where they are actively listening and responding.

MEET THE FIRST GRADE TEACHERS
Mrs. Blackwood
Mrs. Chalmers
Hello, I'm Wendy Chalmers. My dad was in the Navy so I moved about every 3 years and was "the new girl" often. I've been teaching for 28 years in kindergarten, first and second grades. I love teaching and learning. Lena(21) and Johnny (18) are my wonderful "children". Cosmo is my fun dog.
Ms. Collins
Mrs. Ledford
Hi! My name is Heather Ledford. This is my 25th year in the county and my 18th year at McNair. Outside of school, my husband and I are actively watching our thirteen-year-old son play football and baseball. We also enjoy going camping, riding four wheelers, and spending time with our family and friends. I am looking forward to an amazing year in first grade!
Mrs. Smith
Hi I'm Cait Smith! This is my 9th year teaching. I have my master's in Early Childhood Education, and my favorite grades to teach are 1st and Kindergarten. I love music and singing and we do a lot of singing in my classroom. Outside of school, I love to spend time with my daughter, who is 2, and my son who is 5, as well as our dog and our 2 cats!
