Highlights from Week of Welcome
WOW!
Week of Welcome was a success!
The Met just kicked off our school year with our annual Week of Welcome, and it was a big success! Students had time to meet each other, build advisory culture, get a jump start on internship exploration, engage in unique workshops, and enjoy pizza at our closing lunch. We also celebrated the chance to meet so many of our parents during our New Family Mixer that opened WOW. Thanks to the SD Met Foundation for donuts and coffee at our Mixer and pizza and veggies at our Friday WOW lunch. When parents, students, and staff come together, it strengthens our community! Here are some photos from WOW!
Campus Schedules
Daily Schedule
The daily schedule for the school year is 8:30am to 3:15pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Tuesdays and Thursdays are dedicated to internships, and all students must attend school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30am to 11:30am to work with their advisor on finding an internship placement. As soon as a student has secured an internship, including a signed contract with the mentor, the student may start attending internship on Tuesdays and Thursdays instead of coming to campus. Please refer to the Daily Schedule here.
Attendance and Absences
Good attendance is of the utmost importance for your student's learning. As an independent study school where students only attend their classes three days a week, it is vital that students are on time to EVERY class, EVERY day. Parents/guardians are required to inform our office (619-388-2299) if your students will be absent or late. If you wish to request an early dismissal for your student, please notify our office no later than 10am that same day. Thank you for supporting your students with good attendance habits.
Met Gateway Program for NEW Students
All 9th graders and new transfer students have begun our six-week Gateway program on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30am to 11:30am (August 13 - September 19). LTI Gateway teaches our new students how to search for an internship that aligns to their interests and goals, how to use our internship database platform called ImBlaze, and how to interview for and be successful in an internship. In addition, students will experience the Met 101 course, which teaches the skills they need to become successful Met students. During the Gateway program, students will be supported in scheduling interviews for internships, and the goal is for students to be able to transition directly into an internship by the end of the six weeks or shortly thereafter.
Class of 2025
Senior Early Dismissal Policy
As part of supporting our 12th graders in having diverse opportunities for success, the Met has an early dismissal policy for qualified seniors. Students and parents/guardians must submit this Senior Early Dismissal application and await approval by the principal before any early dismissal can begin. Please note that the earliest that seniors may be dismissed is 12:10pm, and early dismissal does not apply on MetUp days (one Friday a month) or other special events that require student attendance until the end of the school day. Please refer to this Senior Early Dismissal Policy document for more details.
Campus Food
Free School Meals for All!
As part of the state of California's Universal Meals Program, all students in our school district are eligible to receive free breakfast and lunch at school. Meals will continue to be "grab and go" bags, but this year, we are planning to expand our menu to include hot lunch options for the first time. If you would like your student to receive free meals at the Met, please sign up by emailing our interim administrative assistant, Carolyn Dumas, at cdumas@sandi.net. Students may also sign themselves up with Carolyn in the office.
Meals will be served inside K203 (office). Breakfast is served from 8:00 to 8:25, and lunch is served from 12:10 to 12:25. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, lunch is served from 11:30 to 11:45 for any student who wishes to take a lunch at the end of the Gateway class.
The service format is changing from our previous system where students were able to serve themselves from the lunch cart. The reason for this change is that our district’s Food Services department has informed us that for accountability purposes, they need an accurate count of how many students have taken a meal, and they need for students to take a whole meal, not just individual items from the food bags. As such, we are switching over to handing out whole breakfast and lunch bags to every student who wishes to have one. We expect this will be a very quick process as all meals come to us already bagged, and students simply need to pick one up from our office staff and have their name marked on our list.
We look forward to serving you!
Other Food Options on Campus
Beginning on Monday, Aug. 19, college food services will be open Monday-Friday throughout the school day. This includes the Terrace Cafe and Mesa Commons.
Students are always welcome to bring lunch from home. Some teachers have mini refrigerators, microwaves, and electric kettles in their classrooms that they can share with students.
Students are NOT allowed to have food delivered from online delivery services (such as DoorDash, GrubHub, Uber Eats, and similar apps). Though we are located on a college campus, we are officially a CLOSED campus, and students are not allowed on and off campus during school hours without permission, nor are food deliveries or other unauthorized visitors allowed. Please ensure that your students bring food or lunch money so that they can eat well, be healthy, and stay focused on their studies!
Parking Information
Parking and Drop-Off/Pick-Up Information
Students who drive and wish to park regularly on campus will be required to purchase a parking permit from the Mesa College Police Office. Visitors may park in visitor spots or use pay stations to get hourly parking permits. Student drop-off and pick-up is allowed in Lot 1, as well as other areas along Mesa College Circle where there are curb cuts to allow cars to pull off the road. Please DO NOT attempt to drive up to the SD Met building for drop-off or pick-up.
Mesa Parking Permits
Students who need a parking permit will need to pick up a Mesa College parking permit application in the office to get a parking permit for the Fall semester. Once you complete the application, take it to the College Police office (Q-100) along with $40 for payment - cash, check, debit/credit card or Apply Pay accepted. If you have a temporary parking permit, it will expire on September 3.
College and Career
Mesa College Fall Classes Begin MONDAY!
Mesa classes begin Monday, August 19th. This week students have been busy making sure their classes show up in their Mesa portal, getting books from the bookstore, and, for some first time college students, getting their Mesa ID. All students who are enrolled in Mesa College classes should bookmark and regularly check the Met/Mesa Google Classroom for updates, deadlines, and instructions. If you have any difficulties with your enrollment process, please contact Mr. Moravec at jmoravec@sandi.net.
Work Permits
If your student is currently employed, their current work permits expire on August 17, 2024. All employed students will need to apply for a new work permit for the 2024-2025 school year. Applications are available online here, or can be picked up from Ms. Mann-Deibert's room. Permits must be signed by a parent/guardian and employers. If you have any questions, please email Ms. Mann-Deibert at gmann-deibert@sandi.net.
