Solar Eclipse Viewing
On April 8, 2024 a solar eclipse will cross North America. We are excited to offer students the opportunity to engage in a unique learning experience by viewing the upcoming solar eclipse. Safety is our top priority. Our WPO (West Parent Organization) has purchased glassed for all students and staff. We will be sending home a permission slip with your West Wildcat on Monday or Tuesday, April 1st or 2nd and will need it returned by Friday, April 5th. The permission slip may say that it needs to be returned by March 22nd but that date is wrong. Please have the permission slip turned in by April 5th. Students without a signed form will remain indoors and watch a live broadcast.
West Mileage Club - Volunteers Needed
Starting April 1st through May 10th, Kindergarten - 5th grade students will have the option to walk/run laps on the track during lunch recess on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Kindergarten students now have the opportunity to participate too. Mileage Club allows students to earn tokens, while getting exercise at recess. Participation is optional and students may choose how often they want to participate.
We need volunteers to make this club a success. Volunteers hand out student cards and scan laps during recess. Please click on the signup genius to volunteer. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60B0F45A4AB29AAF94-48397499-west?useFullSite=true#/
FitnessGram Testing
Students in grades 3-8 will participate in FitnessGram testing during Physical Education (P.E.) starting after spring break (4/1/24 - 5/20/24). FitnessGram is a nationally recognized, criterion-referenced assessment to determine students’ fitness levels based on what is optimal for good health. The assessment measures the five health-related components of physical fitness that have been identified as important for overall health: cardiovascular endurance, body composition and muscular endurance, strength and flexibility. Click here for more information.
5th Grade Music Perfomance
The 5th grade music performance is on Thursday, April 11, at 7:00pm on the West Elementary School cafeteria stage. Please click HERE for information about the required costumes for each class. If you have any questions about costumes or the performance, please reach out to Kevin Brady at kbrady@d47.org"
REQUESTS FOR CLASS PLACEMENT
Teachers and administrators go to great lengths to build classrooms of students who will work well together as a community of learners. When building these classes, we consider many things (e.g., class size, Special Education, Extended Curriculum, English Language Learners, social/emotional needs, special learning needs, and unique academic and behavior issues). Balancing the classes is very important to us and to the success of the students.
Requests for class placement must be put in writing and addressed to Mrs. Klinsky. Requests may also be sent via email to BAKlinsky@d47.org. Please make the request based on specific needs you feel your child has and do not mention a specific classroom teacher’s name or another student’s name. If a teacher’s name or another student’s name is mentioned, Mrs. Klinsky will be asking for additional information via email or phone call as decisions will not be made on specific teachers and students. The deadline for class placement requests is April 12th, 2024. All requests will be considered, but may not be granted due to the desire to balance the classes. The staff begins to work on these class lists the following week and requests after this time will not be considered. In July, the building administrators review the list and add new students who have moved into our school boundaries. The class placements will be posted in ParentVue in August, the exact date is not known at this time. Changes can not be made after class placements are posted.
Important Measles Information
There have been six confirmed cases of measles in Illinois in the past six months. Be alert for symptoms of measles such as fever, cough, pink eye, runny nose followed by rash. The Measles Mumps Rubella vaccine (otherwise known as MMR) is a highly effective vaccine that provides measles immunity. Please do not hesitate to call the MCDH Communicable Disease or Immunization Programs at 815-334-4500 with any questions regarding measles or to see if an individual is able to receive the vaccine at the health department.
