SPARTANS IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Best Buddies
Spartan Strong Superlatives for the Week ending 4/3/2020
All staff and students have been nominated by other Spartans and their exact words have been used to describe how they have been #spartanstrong.
Academics
MaKayla Beard -MaKayla constantly provides quality student work that goes above and beyond the expectations of her class. MaKayla is a natural leader and continues to strive for excellence.
Ryan Theil -Transitioned to online learning immediately and is a very conscientious student in completing assigned tasks inside and outside the classroom.
Vanessa Lopez Arevaldo -Vanessa has met all of the daily expectations for our switch to online learning and has exceeded them as well. She has improved so much even since the start of the semester.
Emory Blackwell -Showed significant improvement in the classroom the last month classes were in session; continually strives for excellence in online education.
Kailey Heller -Kailey is an incredible student and simply loves learning. She always delivers quality work and is a beautiful writer, which has become evident in the last few weeks of writing assignments online. Her work ethic during distance learning is outstanding!
Torianna Graham -Tori has not missed a beat in the virtual norm we are in now. She was doing great in class before we left the face-2-face world and she continues to do great work and consistent engagement in the eLearning environment. I have been really impressed with her! Definitely Spartan Strong!
Arts
Olivia Kemp -Olivia has really stepped up this year to support the theatre arts community. She has done a phenomenal job as dance captain for the musical and even choreographed a couple of numbers. She is a true leader in our department.
Ainsley Williams -Winner of the 30th Annual Daggett and Shuler Safe and Sober Prom Night T-Shirt Contest
Athletics
Luke Albertson -Luke Albertson has been the best player and a tremendous leader for the boys tennis team for 4 years. Luke has not lost to another tennis player in this county for 4 years: that includes RHS, WF, RJR, etc. As an athlete Luke has the rare feat as being qualified for the state tennis tournament in both doubles and singles tennis and has been the conference player of the year for two straight years. Luke has also been the Conference Tournament Champion in both of those years in singles and was the Conference Tournament Champion in doubles for his sophomore year. Every year he has been at MTHS Luke has been the most rock solid leader and supportive doubles partner: Luke has missed no tennis matches while at MTHS due to illness or injury. More than those accomplishments (which are considerable) Luke has been through 3 head coaches and has been where and when the team needed him NO MATTER WHAT. His positive attitude and Fantastic perseverance through thick and thin makes him truly Spartan Strong!
Hannah Riley -Hannah finished off an outstanding freshman indoor track season by earning All-State honors in the 1000 meter run by finishing 3rd at the 3A State Championships. In all, Hannah competed in four events at the State Meet, finishing 6th in the Pole Vault, and earning 7th place finishes as a member of the 4x800 and 4x400 meter relays. During her first indoor track season Hannah was able to set a new school record in the 500 meter run with a time that ranks as the 9th fastest by a freshman in North Carolina history, she just missed a school record in the Pole Vault and her mark of 10’6” ties her for the 4th best by a freshman in NC history, and her time in the 1000 ranks her as the 2nd fastest freshman in North Carolina history.
Frances Whitworth -Frances finished off her indoor season by earning All-State honors in two events at the 3A State Championships. Frances earned her first Individual State Championship in the 1600 meter run, setting the Mount Tabor High School indoor 1600 meter school record with a time of 5:04 and then came back to finish 3rd in the State in the 3200 meter run. She did all of this a week after competing in the 3A State Championships in a completely different sport as a member of the Mount Tabor Swim team!
Jacob Gallant -With the loss of our Track & Field season Jacob Gallant (senior) has continued to train on his own. With the help of an Alumni (Cameron Ponder) Jacob ran a 4:20 Mile last week with no one watching. This time would be a NC# 1 this season and was a personal best for Jacob by 7 seconds!
Spartan Baseball Seniors -The Seniors have been very important to the Spartan Baseball program for four years and will continue to be important as we move forward. Be patient and stay #SPARTANSTRONG!
Jimmy Britt -Named to the Triad Sports Weekly All JV Team. Named to the Perfect Game USA Preseason All-Atlantic Team
O. Fernanders -Named to the Triad Sports Weekly All JV Team
Jamerian Peterkin -Triad Sports Weekly JV Player of the Year
Shaylen Woodberry -Named to the WS Journal All NW Team
Jakob Moore -Named to the WS Journal All NW Team
Ciara Wright- Recently named to the Triad Sports Weekly All Forsyth Basketball Team
ShaDona Brown -ShaDona has been a 4 year starter on our Varsity softball team. She has been a very valuable player to our program and a very hard worker. Shadona was looking forward to her senior year to shine and she was off to a good start in that area. Her fielding at second base has always been her strength and she was hitting the ball very good before we stopped play.
She was one of our captains this year and was being a really strong leader to her teammates. I really hate that I didn't get to coach her more during her last year as a Spartan. I had no doubt she was going to do good things and be a candidate for All Conference this year. Shadona is a wonderful young lady and I'm beyond sad that our season was cut suddenly. She will be thoroughly missed in our program.
Amar Aikens -Recently committed to Guilford College for Football
Jake Koonin -Named to the Perfect Game All-Atlantic Baseball Team
Ashlyn Swink -Ashlyn was off to a great start for the Spring softball season when everything came to a halt. She has been our starting catcher for 3 previous years, of which she was an all conference catcher last season. We had to move her this year due to some graduation last year to shortstop. She was doing a great job at her new position, having not made an error so far. Her hitting, which had always been good was off to a great start as well. She was hitting over 450 before we stopped play. I had NO doubt that she was going to have an amazing senior season. I am beyond devastated that I don't get to coach her in her final year as a Spartan. She was a captain and just an outstanding, fun loving, hard working young lady. She is planning to play softball in College at Buffalo State.
Exemplary Character
Fatou Niang -Fatou has been working incredibly hard to keep up with her work online and is bringing a positive attitude to all she does. Her dedication to her education is admirable and her encouragement to her friends and teachers is much needed.
William Gulley -William Gulley volunteered to be the Raider Captain but what is more important, after the school closed he kept promoting JROTC cadets to keep working out. He set up workout plans and checked in with cadets to keep them active.
Gabe Russell -Gabe isn't my student, but I've seen him offer AMAZING support to another student who is mine. He cares so much about helping others, going out of his way to check in on them and offering both encouragement and tough love when needed. We've been lucky to have him as a part of the Mt. Tabor community and I know his friends are lucky to have him in their corner and lives.
Colin Smith -Collin has been making a point of checking in with me every day to make sure that I am doing well with this separation from our students. His thoughtfulness and generosity is an inspiration. It means a lot that he cares about his teachers and wants to know that we are well.
Personal Improvement
Chrsteon McGill - With all the circumstances that we are facing Teon continues to regularly get his work done. He is currently working on two classes in edgenuity sometimes working early in the day or late night to get his classes completed.
Evelyn Mendoza -5th year senior who has not given up on herself and earning her diploma. After rocky 4 years due to health issues, she has made it, and is making it! She just completed English through FACE and starting on her next course! Proud of her for not ever giving up and working hard!
Instruction
Emily Houlditch -Emily has been super involved in the online process for our EC and other students that need support. She has been tireless in helping me connect with students and provide materials for them.
Azurre Dalton -Ms. Dalton has kept in contact with all of her students and is working diligently with them in a one on one manner to ensure that they are successful in all that they need to do. She is pushing students to do their absolute best and is great help to all the teachers she impacts. Because She helps me with my work all the time ( from a student).
Jennifer Martin -Mrs. Martin teaches a range of English classes (from English 2 to AP Language) and also guides production of the school's yearbook. She shifts seamlessly between the roles of lead teacher, co-teacher, advisor / editor, mentor, mediator, college-level instructor - often all within the same few hours. She brings years of experience teaching for NC Virtual Public Schools to our new online school adventures. She is a professional and a great resource for her students and for her colleagues.
Cameron Schwenn -Madame Schwenn is a great asset to the World Languages department. She is never afraid to try something new and she is always willing to share what she learns with her colleagues. During this very unusual period we're in, she took initiative to plan, organize, and manage a virtual PLT for the department. We are very lucky that she is a part of the Tabor Family.
Instructional Support
Laurie Schaefer -Ms. Schaefer was a key point person for our staff to learn about Zoom and help set up the Spartan online learning hub for our students.
Vicki Laurita -Tremendous leadership in the timing of getting our school a strategic plan in place and executing our online education at Mt. Tabor High School. The communication and delivery of information with administration, students, parents, teachers, staff and community was extremely effective. The tireless hours spent to transfer our education to online learning was above and beyond their duties. The pride that was shown for our Mt. Tabor Family from these 2 individuals was evident in the way in which they went about their day to day business of this transformation.
Ruth Morton -Coordinating with Mrs. Uhrig, Mrs. Morton did an awesome job getting all the chromebooks prepared for distribution to our students in an efficient way with a great positive attitude.
Judy Uhrig - Coordinating with Mrs. Morton,, Mrs. Uhrig did an awesome job getting all the chromebooks prepared for distribution to our students in an efficient way with a great positive attitude.
Tonya Dorman -TONYA HAS WORKED TIRELESSLY TO PROVIDE INSTRUCTION AND ENCOURAGEMENT SINCE E-LEARNING BEGAN.
Rheanna Howe - Parent contact, supporting students, and supporting fellow staff members
Heather Hanlin-Grogg - She's da bomb... She has been working hard helping students and teachers while transitioning to ELearning.
Service to School
Ed Weiss -Leading us through this school closure crisis, Ed has been a tremendous leader, as always, during the E-learning roll out. Under his leadership Tabor was way ahead of the curve in preparedness. More importantly, he leads by example. His communication to staff, students and parents is exemplary!!! Lucky to teach in a school with amazing and dedicated admin.Tremendous leadership in the timing of getting our school a strategic plan in place and executing our online education at Mt. Tabor High School. The communication and delivery of information with administration, students, parents, teachers, staff and community was extremely effective. Jackson Miller -Jackson, while doing the news from his room, still managed to see the vast possibilities of Sparta by consistently delivering an uplifting message when most see this as nothing but a waste of time and just boring. Jackson, a student in my H Chem. class this semester, has ALWAYS taken any situation as an opportunity for self reflection and strength. That, I believe, was evident in the News this past week and is a refreshing perspective coming from someone so young.
Robyn Wesselman -Way above and beyond with the food pantry and collecting other needed items like bedding and clothes for our students and their family.Robyn Wesselman has been instrumental in keeping our Spartan Food Pantry going strong while school is not in session. She always puts the needs of our Spartans front and center which in this unprecedented event happening is amazing. She is truly #spartanstrong. Helped to coordinate 40+ meals for our Spartan Needy Family Fund from Camel City BBQ and has passionately (on a weekly basis) manned and delivered food from our food pantry to Spartan Families
Max U’Ren -Working behind the scenes during this crisis in getting donated meals for our Spartan needy families
