December is here and we have had a wonderful start to the 2022-2023 school year! Parent & Family Engagement News is brought to you by NSD Title I. It is published to keep you up to date and informed about what is happening in our district’s Title I programs. This issue is packed full of resources to help parents continue to navigate the academic school year by turning a lens to various topics that guide education and support student achievement: Federal Education Law: ESSA, Title I, PA Core Standards, Curriculum & Assessment, Monitoring School Progress and Parent & Family Engagement at your student's school.

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) is the federal K-12 education law of the United States. ESSA was signed into law in 2015 and replaced the previous education law called “No Child Left Behind.” ESSA extended more flexibility to States in education and laid out expectations of transparency for parents and for communities.

ESSA requires every state to measure performance in reading, math, and science. Each state determines the way students are assessed. Every school in each state must inform parents about their standards and their results.

In this newsletter you will find a link to Pennsylvania’s Core Standards. Additionally, you will find information about school performance at the Future Ready PA Index site. The Future Ready PA Index uses four different approaches in scoring and depicting student progress and performance.

• Under ESSA, Title I is the largest federally funded educational program in the United States.
  
• It provides supplemental funds to assist schools with the highest student concentrations of poverty to meet school educational goals.
  
• Title I is designed to help students achieve proficiency on challenging state academic achievement standards.
  
• It provides funds to districts to assist schools with the highest levels of economically disadvantaged children for improving student achievement, staff development, and parent and community engagement.
  

Pennsylvania’s Core Standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics are robust and relevant to the real world and reflect the knowledge and skills our young people need to succeed in life after high school, in both post-secondary education and a globally competitive workforce.

Neshaminy School District Curriculum is aligned to the Pennsylvania Core Standards. The standards tell what students should know and be able to do by the end of each grade level.

Assessment is a process of evaluating student performance to determine what content and skills have been mastered. Assessment enables school leaders and educators to make informed decisions about instructional practices and effective pedagogical approaches to maximize student achievement levels. Effective assessment is an integral part of the teaching and learning process. Well-designed assessments can give valuable information to teachers, parents, and students.

Neshaminy School District has 5 Title I schools (Ferderbar ES, Hoover ES, Miller ES, Schweitzer ES and Twanks ES). We have a Title I Reading Specialist available at each Title I school to assist parents with monitoring and supporting their child’s academic progress between home and school. One of the roles of the Title I Reading Specialist is to provide opportunities for parents to participate in meetings, workshops and activities that will greatly benefit student success.
