Attendance
Congratulations to our High Plains Families! Your efforts to keep your child in school is making a difference! Compared to Thompson School District’s absenteeism rate of 19%, our High Plains students have an absenteeism rate of 13%! This means they are in their classrooms learning more, and with their friends playing more, than other k-8 and middle schools (with an average of 15% absenteeism). We want to continue to encourage all students to keep up this great attendance! If absences are necessary, we appreciate your communication with school to allow us to document the absence correctly, and for us to provide your student with missing work so they don’t fall behind. We love our Bison students - and are so fortunate to have time with them each day!
Book Fair
Hi folks and families of HPS! We are gearing up for the fun that is... The Book Fair!
It's always such a special time for the students and the adults who love the fair as well. We hope to see everybody come through and experience some of the magic through the eyes of your youngsters, we love that they love books : )
Please join us in the STEAM room at the end of the hall on the first floor, by the third grade classrooms-
Tuesday, Oct. 15 from 4-7:30pm, Wednesday, Oct. 16 4-7:30pm and Thursday, Oct. 17 8am-3:30pm
If you would like to give your kiddos the independence to visit the fair themselves, there is an ewallet which you can preload for them, we will send home some flyers about how to go about this.
Note from the School Nurse
Now that school is back in, it is a good time to remind parents to be on the alert for head lice. Head lice is a common childhood condition. All places where children get together are places where head lice can be transferred. Clean hair and home are no guarantee that head lice will not find your child. Please take a moment now and periodically throughout the year, to check your child’s hair for nits (eggs), which can usually be seen long before lice can be located. Nits are small, white to tan particles found in the hair that look a lot like dandruff, except that dandruff is loose and can be brushed from the hair, whereas nits are attached to the hair shaft and cannot be easily removed. Lice are very small (flea sized) and do not like light, so they can be hard to find. If your child is experiencing itching of the scalp or you see something in the hair and are not sure what it is, feel free to stop by the health office and allow us to check.

Battle of the Books
HPS families of bookworms and eager readers! It is not too late for your kiddo to join Battle of the Books after school club.
The Battle of the Books is a book trivia program coordinated for students in grades 3-12. Book Battles are competitions similar to quiz bowl games, but questions come from a controlled list of books that participants read in preparation for the competition. The purpose of the program is to foster a lifelong love of reading. The objective for Battle of the Books is to teach students how to work together in a group for a common goal, expose them to award-winning literature, and encourage a high volume of reading inside and outside of the classroom.
Ms. Angi HPS library/media assistant and coach/coordinator for this club decided that this year our HPS B.O.B. club needs to be inclusive this year for those who struggle with reading for whatever reason and for those with dyslexia. The beauty of B.O.B. as well is that it is a flexible club where students do not have to attend every weekly Wednesday meeting if they are busy with other clubs and activities. As long as they are continuing with the books on their own time this is the majority of what is required of them. They also have plenty of time to get through the books as well. Thank you!
