Classroom Chronicles
Trust Walk
Escape Room
Recently, Mrs.Sample's 6th grade Pre-algebra class took part in an escape room. Students had to solve algebraic expressions and equations to unlock the boxes around the room. In the end students had to work together to unlock the final box and were handsomely rewarded with some chocolate!
Trout Stream Study
Mr. Catherman's 7th grade science students are visiting streams throughout our community this week. The students are analyzing the quality of local streams to determine their suitability for releasing trout raised in the classroom throughout the year. Our students will collect data on physical, biological, and chemical elements and analyze the data to determine teh most suitable location to release the trout.
Teacher Feature
Our November teacher feature is Mrs. Gaugler our art teacher. Her interview is below:
Why did you become a teacher?
My elementary art teacher was very kind and inspiring. She made everyone feel like an artist and I wanted to be just like her.
What is your favorite project that you do with students?
My favorite project is the 8th grade sketchbook project. Students pick a word to describe themselves and the cover of the sketchbook is a collage inspired by that word.
What is your favorite art technique?
I enjoy print making. I like the process of carving the surface of the linoleum tile in order to create a print. It requires backwards thinking.
How long have you been a teacher?
This is my 10th year as an art teacher and my 9th year at the middle school. My first year of teaching was at Linntown elementary.
What do you enjoy doing outside of school?
I like spending time with my family and spending time outdoors.
Voter Registration and Mock Election
Ms. Vanbuskirk has been working hard to plan a mock election for middle school students. Recently, students in all grades learned about the importance of exercising the right to vote. Students have learned about political parties, the voter registration process, electoral college, and voting on election day. Student volunteers assisted students with registering to vote during their lunch periods. Students who register to vote will be able to vote in our school-wide mock election on November 4; just like in real life, students who do not register will not be able to vote! Fortunately, our student volunteers encouraged students to exercise their “right” to make their middle school voice heard. A special thank you to Ms. Vanbuskirk for creating this opportunity for our students, 8th grade student Qasim Ali for planning and assisting with many facets of this process, and for Mr. Baker for supporting the many technical aspects associated with our mock election!
Plein Air Painting
On October 22nd, Our art teacher Emily Gaugler and select DHEMS students attended an art demonstration at Dale’s Ridge in Lewisburg. Students participated in a “Plein air” painting workshop. “Plein air” art is about experiencing painting and drawing in the natural landscape rather than painting indoors or in a studio. The practice goes back for centuries but was made into an art form by the French Impressionists. Students had a demonstration by Robert Gorby an artist from Lewisburg. They also learned about the conservancy and history of the property. After the presentations, students were able to spend the afternoon sketching and painting scenes from the property.
Veteran's Day cards
Here at Donald H Eichhorn students are involved in community service projects. In the month of October students created thank you cards for Veterans. These cards will be given to veterans with Veteran’s Day meals that will be provided to over 1000 local veterans during a free meal event held at Geisinger locations throughout PA on November 10th. Students created their cards during their weekly advisory meetings led by homeroom teachers.
The Snyder Family Fundraiser
The DHEMS student council and PSA sponsored a special event to celebrate the life of Jaxon Snyder. Students visited Ard's farm on Wednesday, October 23rd. Some activities that took place at this event were the classic corn maze, Pelican’s shaved ice, a tunnel slide, and so much more. All donations went to the Snyder family in honor of Jaxon.
Fall Play
The Fall play cast and crew have been hard at work preparing for their performance! A Lighter Shade of Noir will be performed on November 8th at 7:00 pm and November 9th at 1:00 pm and 7:00 pm. The entrance fees are $5 for adults and $3 for kids and seniors. Students who have paid their activity fee and have a blue stickers on their student ID can get in for free. Make sure you have you ID!

Social Cruelty Guidance Lesson
This past week Mr. Mowrey, Mr. Sokalzuk, and Mrs. Ulrich took time to come to every student’s gym class to give a presentation on the forms of social cruelty. They touched on bullying, excluding, teasing, rumoring, and ganging up. Their goal is to make a safe, comfortable environment for everyone at DHEMS. If your child is having a hard time socially or is committing social cruelty, please contact the guidance counselors. At DHEMS we want our students feel welcomed at their home away from home. If you’re looking for a great conversation starter, then ask your kids for more information about this topic!
