Edgewood's Tiger Talk
October 15, 2023
We are committed to our journey of developing EACH child to be an inspired learner and a caring, contributing citizen.
Principal's Update
This year, we continue our staff focus on improving our reading instruction. Over the past few years, we've been working to make sure that our instruction aligns with the most current research about how children learn to read.
Reading is incredibly complex. To read, students combine knowledge of spoken language with knowledge of how letters and sounds work in print. To read complex texts, students need to have very strong knowledge of spoken language.
Two years ago, we focused on strengthening our phonemic awareness and phonics instruction. While we continue this work, this year, we're diving into oral language comprehension. We're focusing on this through read-alouds. Reading aloud to children is one of the best ways to build their background knowledge and vocabulary.
The best part is, it's easy for you to help at home, too! Reading aloud to your children is both fun and important to help them become better readers.
- If you're shopping the scholastic fair with your child, look for a book beyond their reach that you could read to them.
- Have a favorite book from your childhood? Read it to them.
- Looking for inspiration? This blog has some great ideas with age recommendations.
And stay tuned--this late fall/winter, we'll have a school-wide reading book. It should be fun!
EHSA Update
You've been Movin' with the Fun Run Fundraiser! We're blown away by the participation in our our First Fun Run Fundraiser. So far, we've raised just over $17,000. All of this money goes back to all of our students, to allow them each to go on a cornerstone field trip. We'd love to have you help cheer on our students during the run. 4K-1st grade will run from 1:00-1:30, and 2nd-5th graders will run from 1:30-2:00 this Friday, October 20th.
November 3rd, we're hosting a Fall Harvest Dance at school from 6-8pm. In addition to fun dancing for the kids, we'll also have snacks for sale AND amazing raffle experiences that families and teachers have put together. Fancy a police department tour? Admirals tickets? A stint as the principal? Make sure to come and check these out!
