⭐️ Important Notes & Reminders
- In order to participate in after school activities, students must be present in school for a minimum of three consecutive hours. ⏰ Students who exceed 9 absences must provide a doctor's note if a student is absent for illness, regardless of the length of the absence. All absences must be called in at 860-355-3793, ext 9.
- Remember to pay lunch balances/add money to your lunch accounts💰
- Please continue to make sure your children are appropriately dressed for the weather. Students go outside for recess as long as temps remain at or above 20º
- A reminder for those that drop off/pick up: Children two to five years old or weighing less than 40 pounds must use a child restraint that has a five-point harness. Children five to eight years old or weighing between 40-60 pounds must use a booster seat or a five-point harness.
National School Nurses Day
Today is School Nurse Appreciation Day and we are incredibly thankful for Lorraine Spinetti and all that she does. Mrs. Spinetti is incredibly patient and kind, and her ability to handle whatever situation comes through her door is unmatched! Thank you, Mrs. Spinetti, for all that you do on behalf of our Sherman Knight community. We are grateful for you!
Teacher Appreciation Week
We are so grateful for our Sherman School staff. To have so many highly qualified individuals who are so committed to our Sherman Knight community, is truly inspiring! Thank you to you all!
⭐️ Upcoming Events
Final Day for Library Book Exchange
Friday, May 24th is going to be the last day for library book exchange. That will hopefully give us time to get all of the books back before school ends. Classes will still come to Library during their scheduled times for reading and activities.
Smarter Balanced (SBAC) and NGSS Assessments
Sherman students in grades 3-8 are participating in the Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBAC) and the NGSS Assessments this week to check their understanding of grade level Math, English Language Arts, and Science skills. Students in grades K-8 will also complete their final iReady diagnostics to measure growth throughout the year.
As a reminder, no personal electronic devices can be in their possession during testing. Cell phones, smart watches, fitbits and airpods will be collected by the teachers and “parked” during this time.
Standardized assessments are one piece of data that teachers use to ensure that students are successfully achieving grade level benchmarks. In some cases, they may be used as one variable in placing students in classes with prerequisites, such as Algebra or honors classes at the high school level. As a school, the data are used for Sherman to understand whether our curriculum is adequately preparing students to succeed according to state and national level learning standards. Lastly, the State of Connecticut uses the data as one variable on our Sherman School Report Card, in particular when identifying a School of Distinction.
We value you as partners in your child’s education and will share the findings of these assessments with you. You can help support your child by ensuring they have a good night’s sleep and healthy breakfast during our assessment window.
If you have questions or concerns, please contact Dr. Fildes at 860-355-3793 x315 or via email at fildesk@shermanschool.com.
