Site Council
Site Council
Dear Families,
We are recruiting for our Site Council at Jefferson. What is Site Council?
Site Council is a group of administrators, teachers, and parents that identify ways to support the school community. By providing leadership, direction and support, we define school priorities and implement ways to improve them. At its core, Site Council is about tailoring the Jefferson HS experience to the specific needs of our students and our community.
What do you do in Site Council?
We review data, trends, and the things we hear from our community to ensure we design and implement programs that best serve the needs of our students and community.
We’re mandated by the state to:
- Develop plans to improve the professional growth of the school's staff;
- Improve the schools instructional program;
- Develop and coordinate plans for the implementation of programs under this chapter at the school; and
- Administer grants-in-aid for the professional development of teachers and classified district employees.
That means we have a say in choosing the methods and programs we use to teach the students. We’re able to determine the types of programs we offer the school community. And, we’re able to direct the ways and manner of our staff’s professional development.
If you have ideas about issues you’d like the school to address, Site Council is the place to voice your opinion. If you’d like input on programs and curriculum at Jefferson HS, come to Site Council meetings and have your voice heard. If you’d like to have a say about the kinds of professional development opportunities you’d like our teachers to have, express it at Site Council.
How can I help?
We’re looking for new members for Jefferson's 2024-2025 Site Council. If you are interested in having a say about the direction and priorities of Jefferson HS, consider joining Site Council or coming to our monthly hour-long meetings on the second Monday of each month.
If you’d like to join, please email Principal Drake Shelton at dshelton@pps.net. Join Site Council now to have your voice heard!
We will begin our first Site Council Meeting 10/14/24
Time: TBD (I would first like to work with the parents who reach-out, so we can determine best time for all)
Cell Phone Policy
Phone policy
All Teachers deliver these slides to all classes on the first day of school and review quarterly
Students keep their phones put away during class time
In their backpack or their pockets is fine
This also includes when they get a pass out of class, are in the hallway, or bathroom DURING CLASS TIME
If students have their phone out in class, teachers give them a warning
If they have it out again, teachers hand them a “sleeping bag”
The phone goes in the bag, unsealed, and stays on the center of the table so that students and teachers can see it
Students get it back at the end of the period
If students refuse to put their phones in the sleeping bag or take their phones out of the bag, teachers dial 0 and a CSA or admin will come escort them to the office.
Students leave their phones in the office until the end of the day
Teacher enters referral and students will go on the ladder
Families get a phone call
Some students might be put on a phone check in plan depending on how frequently they are brought to the office for refusing the “sleeping bag”
District Cell Phone Survey
Dear High School Students,
The Portland Public Schools Board of Directors is considering a draft personal electronic device policy. The draft policy would require students to have their personal electronic devices off and away during the school day.
The Board of Directors would like to hear your thoughts regarding current policies at your school. Your feedback will inform how the Board drafts and finalizes its personal electronic device policy.
Click here to take the survey!
We appreciate your feedback and insights.
Please contact research@pps.net if you have any questions about the survey.
Thank you!
Food Policy
Students are only allowed to consume food in the cafeteria
If a student is eating in class, the teacher should write a referral
If a student brings food to your class they need to put it in their bag or take it to the main office.
We will put their name on it, and they can pick it up at the end of the day
Students bringing food into the building within 30 minutes of lunch ending, will be directed to the cafeteria

Counselor Corner
*Accessing Student Supports*
Before school, during lunch, and after school is a great time for students to stop by for a quick check-in with their counselor. All other times we are asking that students fill out a Google Form to request an appointment. We will do our best to respond to student needs within a few days. If students are in crisis, they do not need to follow these steps–they can just come directly to Student Services. See below for our direct links!
*Evening Scholars Registration Open*
We’ve been connecting with students who need credit recovery to enroll them in Evening Scholars. Registration is currently open for the fall term, which begins on September 30th. Classes are in the evening from 5-8pm, at various locations throughout the district. Please encourage students to reach out if they think they need to make up past credits.
*Schedule Changes*
The last day for students to request a schedule change was Friday 9/13. Except in extenuating circumstances, students who drop/change a class will now see a WX or WF (withdraw/withdraw fail) on their transcript.
*Attention Freshman: Pre-9th Grade Credit*
If your student received high school credit in 8th grade, and they do not want it reflected on their transcript, they need to file a request to have it removed before the end of 1st semester of their Freshman year. Please reach out to your counselor asap if this applies to you.

Demo Player Spotlight
Name: Eleazar Gomez Pascual
Grade: 12th
Sport: Football
Favorite pregame meal?
My favorite meal before a game is a bunch of fruit. A good sandwich and water with any electrolytes or just water.
How long have you been playing this sport?
I’ve been playing football since my freshman year.
What famous athlete inspires you as an athlete?
I don’t really look up to any famous athletes in an inspiring way. Someone who does inspire me with their work ethic, dedication and their kindness is my mom.
Best moment of the season so far?
The best moment for me so far is being named a Captain at the jamboree and During the first game, forcing a fumble and getting a big hit causing a safety.
Best part about being a DEMO?
The best part of being a DEMO is the brotherhood you can build. We are a small school and our sports program isn’t that big with numbers, but the bond we build together takes it all away.
