SHHS Reminders and Expectations for Students
1. As you have seen, WCPS cell phone policy will be enforced this year across the county, and at South High. This policy states clearly that cell phones are to be put away and out of sight during instructional time (which means each class period, bell to bell). Students will not be permitted to use a cell phone if they forget a Chromebook in class.
The modern cell phone is, without a doubt, the greatest single distraction plaguing public education today. Students have become so accustomed to staring at screens since March of 2020 that it is almost impossible to engage students in meaningful instruction. The overwhelming majority of bullying issues are through social media. We know it is going to be hard for students to put phones away - please support South High by supporting the rules and expectations, and having those conversations with your student.
2. No lunch deliveries are permitted from outside sources during the school day (Doordash, Ubereats, etc). Students have tried to go around this policy by asking parents to deliver it instead - please say no. Please see SHHS Student handbook link below for questions.
3. Student Chromebooks will be distributed on the first day of school. It is critcal that students bring their charged Chromebook EVERY SINGLE DAY. If there is an issue with the Chromebook, please have your student contact our Media Center specialist, Ms. Smith, so she can assist.
South Hagerstown High School is a place for social, emotional, and academic growth and success. We understand that conflict may arise between students. We cannot help solving issues if we don't know they exist - encourage your student to reach out to an adult they trust in the building so we can help resolve the issue.
Disruptive behavior is not supportive or healthy for such growth and success!
Bus and Parent Drop off Information
Starting on the FIRST day of school, between 8:10 and 8:35 am, and 3:15 to 3:45 pm, parents will drop off students on the Maryland Avenue side loop.
Bus drop off and pick up will be from the Potomac Street entrance, and no cars will be permitted in the bus pick up line. Only staff and student drivers who are parking will be permitted to enter in the Potomac Street entrance during those times.
During the day between 8:45 am to 3:15 pm, parents will continue to drop students off and pick students up at the visitors entrance at the front of the building, located off the Potomac Street entrance.
Anyone who needs bus information should use the following link to access that information on August 19th:
Schedules live on StudentVue on Thursday, 8/15 at 4 pm
Counselors are working hard to finish schedules and fix problems - we know there are some students whose schedules will need fixed before the start of the year. Schedules will still be worked on after the initial 8/15 date and may change after the initial publication. We ask that you be patient as we prepare almost 1,500 schedules and make sure everyone has what they need to work toward graduation. PLEASE give our teams time to finish and be patient.
Please have your student look on Monday 8/26 before they come to school for the most updated schedule on StudentVue. Old screen shots of schedules may contain inaccurate information.
Students will also receive a paper copy of their schedule in their first period class.
StudentVue and ParentVue provide valuable information. If you need help logging in, please call counseling at 301-766-8374.
School Photo date: Tuesday, September 10th
School photos will be taken on Tuesday, September 10th. ALL students (including seniors) will have photos taken so we can both produce updated Student ID's, and also have underclassmen photos for the yearbook.
Links to purchase photos will be shared at a later date.
Athletics at South High
Students who wish to attend extracurricular activities must be on time, and present for a full day of school on the day of the event (or Friday, if the event is Saturday). If it is an excused tardy or excused absence, they will be permitted to attend.
Staff will be checking to ensure students who are coming to events are also dedicated to being in school on time.
Middle School students, per WCPS policy, are NOT permitted to enter unless they are accompanied by an adult who is with them and responsible for them the entire time.
Admission prices for games has gone up this year across the county. It is now $6 for adults. Students and seniors are still $2, and Gold Cards are accepted for free admission.
School Lunch Website changes
WCPS will no longer be using MySchoolBucks as the way to pay for lunches. The new site is called LINQconnect and you can access it here: https://linqconnect.com/main.
WCPS shared information on LINQconnect: https://secure.smore.com/n/6j1zp
Families who are currently approved for free or reduced price meals via an application must submit a new application before October 1st. After October 1st , if we do not receive a new form, they will automatically revert to paid status.
