Spring Conference Time!
Dear Wentworth Families,
While you are welcome to request to meet with a teacher regarding your child’s progress at any time throughout the year, Wentworth designates time as a school in the fall and spring to offer formal conferences. This year, Spring Conferences will be held between Monday, March 25 - Friday, April 5. We find these conferences to be valuable, and an opportunity to learn more about your child’s progress in addition to their work and teachers’ individual communications that occur throughout the year. We look forward to meeting with you.
We are pleased to offer in-person conferences to all families, right here at our beautiful school. If you are not able to make an in-person conference, please reach out to your child's teacher. They will be happy to make other arrangements with you.
Wentworth School will use Conference Manager by SchoolSoft to schedule conferences. We ask that you please coordinate between parents/guardians the date/time that works best for both of you to meet together. Instructions are included below for how to create an account (or use an account you have already created) to log on to Conference Manager scheduling system where you may select dates and times that are convenient for you and your family. Registration for conferences will begin on Sunday March 10 at 6:00 AM through Sunday, March 24 at 6:00 PM. Once you have completed your requests, an email confirmation will be sent to you.
Please sign up for a conference with your child’s homeroom teacher
We encourage you to also sign up to meet with one or more Allied Arts teachers
Additionally, please sign up with your child’s case manager, math/literacy support teacher and/or student advocate; they are looking forward to discussing your child’s progress toward their goals!
Here is the link for parents to register click here or copy and paste this address to your browser: https://scarboroughschools.schoolsoft.com/login.jsf. The images below are instructions from SchoolSoft for improved access to Conference Manager via your smartphone. If you do not have computer or internet access or have questions regarding this process, please contact LyndaLee Landry at 730-4609 from 8:00 – 3:00, Monday-Friday. Our teachers are available by telephone or email if you have questions or have a unique scheduling situation. Thank you for your continued support; we are looking forward to the opportunity to discuss your child’s successes and goals together!
Sincerely,
Kelli Crosby
Principal
Beautiful Music Concerts
Congratulations and bravo to all of our third and fourth grade musicians for (four!) lovely performances of their concert titled "Big World, Small World." Thank you to Mrs. Goodall and Mr. Fletcher, our music teachers, for your support and guidance for our young musicians!
Special thanks to our art teachers, Ms. Willwerth and Ms. Keating, for displaying student work for the Art Walk to accompany each concert. Our students are so talented!
First Bilingual Breakfast at Wentworth
Mrs. Vafiades, our world language teacher, organized a breakfast for all students who speak two or more languages to connect and have fun. The event was so well attended, that we are going to do it again (and again!). Students identified their country connections on a map, played a passport game to meet others, viewed a slideshow of all the students and languages represented at Wentworth, and even earned prizes. It was a special morning as you can see by some of the photos shared in this newsletter!
Special Guests at Wentworth
Thanks to a grant from the SEF, several teachers, and leadership by Patrick Reagan, our fifth grade students have been fortunate to experience Native American culture studies with special guest presenters at Wentworth.
Two events have taken place so far. On Friday, March 1, all fifth graders enjoyed a Native American Storytelling performance in the Wentworth Learning Commons. Anne Jennison is a traditional Native American storyteller and historian of European and Abenaki heritage. Anne demonstrated a wealth of knowledge and experience in her stories. She has over thirty years of experience sharing her indigenous lessons and stories. We hope students were inspired by her stories and artistry and encouraged to join the annual Wentworth storytelling festival! We were honored to have Anne Jennison visit our school, and our students were an outstanding and respectful audience. Here is a link to her website if you are interested in learning more:https://www.annejennison.com/ .
Then, on Friday, March 8th, we welcomed The Burnurwurbskek Singers who performed for our fifth graders. The Burnurwurbskek singers are comprised of Wabanaki men from the Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Mic Mac and Maliseet tribes. The singers have been together for almost twenty-five years. They perform traditional northeast woodland songs as well as contemporary, intertribal songs. They shared their talents and traditions with us, and we were active participants in the singing and dancing! Here is the website about The Burnurwurbskek Singers: https://www.bates.edu/music/2022/12/06/the-burnurwurbskek-singers/.
Finally, on Thursday, April 11, we are looking forward to Barry Dana, Penobscot leader and educator, who will present for our students in the Wentworth Learning Commons. Barry Dana was born and raised on Indian Island, Maine. He has a degree in forestry and education from the University of Maine. He is a man of many talents and varied interests. Barry is an educator, an ultra marathon runner, painter, a former chief of the Penobscot nation, and a sled dog musher to name a few. He has dedicated his life to preserving Wabanaki culture and language and teaching it to the people of Maine. We are fortunate to have him sharing his talents, wisdom and experience with us.
