Principal's Corner

The end of the 2023-24 school year is fast approaching. Although this time of year is exciting, it is also hectic. Tomorrow, we have our Graduation Breakfast. We will serve students Subway sandwiches and juice boxes first thing in the morning. Following that, we will have a small program dedicated to our Grade 12 class, and we will do our final Student of the Week draw of the year.

Next Thursday, June 13th, is our Elementary Track Meet. We will also serve breakfast to all students that morning, courtesy of a gracious donation by the ZS Farms.

Aside from the our year-end events, we are heading into exam season. Exam schedules were sent home with our secondary students today. The last day of classes for the Grade 9-12s is Wednesday, June 19th, and their exams begin on June 20th. The Grade 7/8 will continue classes until Friday, June 21st. Their exams will be written on June 24th and 25th. A complete exam schedule is included later in the newsletter. Students are free to leave the school when they have finished exams if they have their permission forms signed. Permission forms will be posted online in the coming days. Students are also welcome to stay at school following exams. The focus of time between tests should be preparation. Teachers will be available to support student learning if students require it. We strongly encourage parents and students to check PowerSchool regularly to ensure assignments are complete and to look for feedback that can be used for improvement.

We are busy planning for next year. Over the past couple of weeks, we have advertised two teaching positions. Once we have completed our hiring, a complete staffing update will be provided through School Messenger.

June 27th is the last official day of school. We will have our annual Elementary Awards ceremony at the Daysland Theatre, starting at 1:30 pm. Families are welcome to join us as we recognize the accomplishments of our elementary students this year.

Subway Breakfast - June 6th

For the past couple of years, we have hosted a Subway breakfast to honor our Grad class as a school. We are planning to do it this year on Thursday, June 6th. Students can arrive at school a little hungry that day as we will eat in the gym and have a small tribute to our Grad class. The students will sit in their Squads one last time for the 2023-24 school year.

The Kindergarten Class is once again doing the Community Calendar Fundraiser. Canvassers have been contacting those community members who have purchased calendars in the past to confirm if they would like to purchase a calendar again this year. If you have not been contacted or have never purchased a calendar and would like to, please contact Kristie Nahajowich at 403-392-7797 before June 14th.

June Final Exam Schedule for Gr. 7-12

Our last day of classes are going to be staggered this year. Our Grade 9-12 classes will end on Wednesday, June 19th. Their exam schedule will begin on June 20th. Please note that the Grade 9 PAT and Gr.11/12 Diploma Exams are set by Alberta Learning. As a result, our Grade 9 class is finished earlier than normal due to early PATs. Our Gr. 7/8s will have classes until Friday, June 21st. They will have two final exam days on June 24th and 25th.

Elementary Awards - June 27th

Each year we recognize our elementary students for their accomplishments during the school year. Our Gr. 1-3 students receive personal best awards. In Gr. 4-6, we recognize personal bests, honors, as well as incredible growth. We are hosting this event on the last day of school, June 27th at 1:30 pm in the Daysland Theatre. Family members are welcome to attend. Please contact your child's teacher or the office for more information.

End of the Year Report Cards

We have been using real-time reporting these past two years instead of traditional report cards. Comments and feedback from your child's teachers can be found on your child's assignments in PowerSchool. If you would like a final paper report card to go home with your child that includes their final marks, please contact the office by Friday, June 21st, and we will print one for your child to take home on the last day. Please note that you will continue to see your child's marks and assignment comments throughout July. The rollover to next year will occur in August.

Athletics

Well done to our Jr. and Sr. High Track and Field athletes. We had many new personal best achievements and many ribbon winners!

Our school is looking for coaches for volleyball and basketball in 2024-2025. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the school at 780-374-3676.
