Supporting the Whole Child: What is RTI?
Children’s success in school depends on a combination of factors, including academics, behavior, and social-emotional well-being. Research shows that when educators and families support these interconnected areas, students are more engaged, motivated, and capable of learning.
The Response to Intervention (RTI) approach provides a structured, multi-tiered system of support by identifying students who need additional help early and offering interventions that are tailored to their individual needs. The goal of this proactive, data-driven approach is to prevent obstacles to learning before they start, identify them if they exist, and collaboratively plan interventions to empower students to overcome them.
Tier 1: Universal Support for All Students
At the foundational level, Tier 1 services are provided to all students across the district. In addition to everyday instruction in essential knowledge and skills, these universal supports focus on promoting a positive school climate, fostering social-emotional learning (SEL), and building resilience. We do this by setting, modeling, and reinforcing schoolwide and classroom behavior expectations and providing evidence-based SEL curricula in every classroom.
Tier 2: Targeted Support for Students with Additional Needs
For students who may require more focused support, Tier 2 interventions are available. These services are designed for students identified through screening or referral as needing additional help beyond the universal support. Interventions at this level may include small group support, targeted skill instruction, mentoring, and short-term check-ins.
Tier 3: Intensive Support for Students with Significant Needs
At the highest level, Tier 3 provides individualized and intensive support for students with significant learning gaps, persistent or severe disruptive behavior, mental health crises, and/or mental health concerns that significantly impact their education and daily life.
Students’ responses to the interventions are monitored at each level. Most students are successful at Tier 1 with consistent attendance and encouragement even when they experience challenges, and students receiving Tier 2 or 3 support often jump back up to Tier 1 with time. There are many complex reasons why different students respond differently at different levels, and none of them should be a source of shame or hopelessness for the student, family, or staff. We all grow academically, behaviorally, socially, and emotionally at different speeds and rates, and our staff is committed to being a positive support for each of our students to reach their full potential!
