Wellness Tip from your School Nurse
Kathryn Dibadj MEd, BSN, PEL-CSN, RN
In today’s fast-paced world, it’s more crucial than ever to prioritize your child’s mental health. As parents, you play a significant role in fostering a nurturing and supportive environment for your children to thrive. Here are five essential mental health tips for parents to help you better understand and support your child’s emotional well-being.
1. Encourage Screen-Free Time and Social Media Breaks
In the digital age, children are constantly exposed to screens, which can impact their mental health. Encourage screen-free time for the whole family, creating opportunities for real-world interactions and outdoor activities. Limiting social media usage, especially before bedtime, can help reduce anxiety and improve sleep quality. Be a role model by setting boundaries on your screen time as well.
2. Create One-on-One Time
In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to overlook the importance of quality time with your child. Set aside moments for one-on-one interactions, whether it’s playing a game, going for a walk, or simply having a heartfelt conversation. These special moments can strengthen your connection and provide a safe space for your child to open up about their thoughts and feelings.
3. Ask Open-Ended Questions
Effective communication is key to understanding your child’s emotional state. Instead of asking yes-or-no questions, engage in conversations by asking open-ended questions that encourage your child to express themselves. For example, “Can you tell me how your day went?” or “What’s been on your mind lately?” This approach fosters meaningful dialogue and allows your child to share their emotions more freely.
4. Practice Active Listening
Active listening is a vital skill for parents. When your child talks, give them your full attention. Show empathy and understanding by nodding, maintaining eye contact, and offering encouraging words. By being present in the moment, you create an environment where your child feels heard and valued.
5. Normalize Emotions and Seek Professional Help When Necessary
Let your child know that it’s okay to experience a wide range of emotions. Normalize the fact that everyone has challenging days, and it’s perfectly normal to feel sad, angry, or anxious at times. Encourage them to express their emotions and reassure them that you’re there to support them. If you notice persistent or severe changes in your child’s behavior, don’t hesitate to seek professional help. A mental health professional can provide the guidance and expertise needed to address more complex issues.
By following these mental health tips, you can take steps toward creating a positive and nurturing environment for your child’s well-being.
