MR. WELCH'S HIGHLIGHTS
Hello Mustang Community!
I want to take a minute to welcome the newest member of the Welch family...Copper Welch! He is three and a half months old and joined our family this weekend. We are new to dog ownership, so please feel free to email me any helpful tips and tricks!! I need it! Copper is a Cockapoo, and we couldn't be more in love with him! 💗
It is already April...and that is NO April fools! 🤣 I said it last month, and I'm saying it again. Wow the year is flying by. But you, your kids, and our staff make it a joy everyday to come to work. I am enjoying every minute of learning and getting to serve the students, parents, and staff of this wonderful community. We had a great March, but watch out...here comes April and we...are...busy!
They removed the old playground, and we are waiting on the update when the new playground will be installed. I will keep you all updated as soon as receive that information.
Please enjoy this sports background in honor of National Youth Sports Safety Month and the start of Baseball Season. Go Royals! 👑

Dude, Where's My Tie?
We have had 15 students already this year cut my tie! Students' pictures have been taken (as seen below) and will be placed along with my half of the cut tie (the students get to keep the half that they cut) on the bulletin board in the main hallway past the front lobby for all to see!

Reminders
Did Someone Say New Playground?
The Playground has been demolished and removed. Please see all the information below for the exciting details and updates.
Time Line Overview
MOST RECENT UPDATE
The old playground has been removed, and we are awaiting the arrival of the new playground. I will keep you updated as soon as I find out the install date.
PLAYGROUND WORK FLOW SCHEDULE
The work flow schedule will go as follows for our building. There will be idle time with no work between each project, this is a long process.
*Approximately 5 days for install of play equipment. No students close to this area or traffic flow.
*Following the play equipment install a concrete crew will start to form and pour curbs and or walks around playground which would take approximately 5 days. No students close to this area or traffic flow.
*Once weather forecast is above 40 degrees minimum for two weeks the pour and play process will start. The pour and play surface will take approximately two weeks, weather and cure time permitting. Once pour and play has cured out, OSC will inform school when playground can be used as there still could be more work that needs done for example restoration, asphalt, and or concrete.
*Finishing grade work could happen prior to pour and play surfacing or after surfacing is install.
Thank you for your patience with us during this project. We know there will be a slight inconvenience for our students and staff, but once all the work is complete it will be worth the wait!
FAQ's About Playground
Q: If the weather has to be warm for that long for the pour and play surface, what date are we looking at for that to be installed?
A: Possibly around the first week of May. If it is warmer earlier, this will push up the date.
Q: Why couldn't they just wait till the summer to do this so the kids can have the playground the rest of the year?
A: There are 8 different vendors working together on this to make this happen, and there are 15 schools left to do (21 were done last year). It is not feasible to do all of this in the summer only, so they all have to be spread out. It is a little inconvenient, but we are getting a new playground!
Q: Will the kids get to play on the playground before the pour and play surface is installed?
A: No, this will just be exposed concrete and our students could get hurt badly if they fall off the equipment. Our students safety always has been and remains priority #1.
Q: Will the kids still get to play outside?
A: Yes, there will be a fence placed around the new playground once it is installed, and while we are waiting for the pour and play surface. This will allow students to still utilize the blacktop, soccer field, and possibly other spaces depending on what they fence off. We will just have to get creative with recess!
Q:What will it look like around the new playground?
A: The front (facing the blacktop-left) will be zero entry. Then all possible means will be taken to level out the ground to put a sidewalk around it.
Q: There is a lot of open gravel area at the bottom of the rendering. What happens to this space?
A: They will be filling this in with grass.
As I get new information, I will share it with you. Please let me know if you have any questions.

A Message From Our PTO
From the PTO President:
Each month as I prepare to write this update, I am taken aback at how quickly this school year has gone by! Having a child in 5th grade is exciting yet bittersweet–if you haven’t experienced this yet you certainly will. But as we look toward the end of the school year, we still have more exciting things in store!
Though we didn’t have as many school days in March, we still held various PTO events such as 5th Grade Fun Night at PRT, Donuts with Dudes, and a restaurant night at Torchy’s Tacos. In case you aren’t aware, 5th Grade Fun Night is where the 5th graders get to have a pool party at PRT and celebrate together before the end of their elementary journey.
To everyone attending these events, we appreciate you! And we certainly couldn’t do any of this without the committees that helped make these events happen, thank you so much!
New this year: Skate City has a wonderful opportunity for our families this summer! They are selling School Summer Membership Passes that work all summer long for discounted rates. Plus, it’s also an easy fundraiser for our PTO. Scan the QR code and be sure to enter Meadow Lane as your school so we can receive credit! Flyers should be sent home with students within the next week, but there’s a digital version online.
As a PTO, April boasts one of our most exciting events of the year: the Carnival on the 26! Because of the size of this event, it requires many volunteers and donations. I mentioned this last month, but if you are new to Meadow Lane, this is a can’t miss event! Games, silent auction, theme basket raffle, Mr. Welch in a Dunk Tank, cake walk and more! Check out the attached flyer for more information, and if you have any donations please contact Laura at laura.roxann.greer@gmail.com.
Our last PTO Meeting of the year will be on Tuesday, April 9th at 7pm. Every parent/guardian is a member of our PTO. Our new officers for the PTO Board will be voted in at this meeting. We hope to see you there!
Per usual, there’s always a place for YOU in our PTO!

🏌🏻 Hudson Burian: Golf Greatness! ⛳
This month we recognize a 4th Grade student from Mrs. Wolf's class: Hudson Burian
Over Spring Break, Hudson had the opportunity to play in the U.S. Kids Golf Jekyll Island Cup 2024 in Jekyll Island, GA. He had a blast and even had his coach, Aaron Kline, caddy for him.
This summer he has earned the opportunity to continue his championship era. He will start the summer out by traveling to Scotland to compete in the U.S. Kids Golf European Championship 2024. He has also earned the opportunity to travel to NC to play in U.S. Kids Golf World Championship 2024 at Pinehurst. Additionally, he will also play in several local tournaments throughout the summer. He has a full summer of golf ahead!
Congratulations Hudson on all of your accomplishments and success. Good luck to you this summer, and know that ML is right behind you cheering you on!
Hudson and his Coach, Aaron Kline
Nice shot out of the trap!

🌔 SOLAR ECLIPSE DAY - APRIL 8TH 🌒
On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. In Olathe, a Deep Partial Eclipse of magnitude 90.7% will be visible. The Partial Eclipse begins at 12:37 p.m. through 3:11 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring at 1:54 p.m. when 90.7% of the sun’s surface will be covered by the moon. As educators, we could not be more thrilled to have school in session that day and be able to provide students with amazing learning opportunities for this rare event – the next opportunity to view a total solar eclipse from the contiguous United States won't occur until 2044!
Solar eclipse viewing glasses will be provided for every student and staff member in the Olathe Public Schools. These solar eclipse glasses meet NASA safety certification guidelines. Click here for more information regarding safety during the solar eclipse. We will teach and practice with all students the safe viewing of an eclipse and stress the importance of ONLY viewing the eclipse through the glasses. Students will be required to wear their glasses anytime they are observing the sun and eclipse. For our younger students that might want to take these off, we will be using rubber bands attached to the earpieces to help hold these on comfortably. We will also be providing eclipse themed snacks and music. So students, bring a blanket and let's watch science in action!
We believe students and staff of Olathe Public Schools will have a safe and fun experience viewing the eclipse by participating in planned activities in their school building. If you prefer your child NOT to participate in the solar eclipse viewing, please let me (Casey) know and there will be an option for your child to have an excused absence or a supervised, alternative activity that will be provided at school.
We look forward to sharing this experience with students and staff on April 8. We want to thank our Learning Services staff members for their dedication in making this event special districtwide! Click here for more information, including resources for families, about the solar eclipse.
In partnership,
Casey

Community Service Club
Hello everyone!
Our next meeting will be April 11th in the library but we do have an off site service project coming up on April 3 at Church of the Resurrection. I was able to reserve a spot for CSC to participate in an off site event on April 3rd with the Church for the Resurrection's Back Packs for Hunger program. I am attaching the info sheet on how the program works as well as a signup genius link to follow. As this is an off-site event parents will need to provide transportation and will most likely have to pull their kiddos out of school by 3:30 to make it over to the Leawood location for the 4:00 start time. The event will run until about 5:15 so please only sign up if you can attend the full 1 hour and 15 min requirement.
We did this event a couple of years ago and they have a prompt start time so I apologize if this is a tricky one for parents to accommodate but we are trying to organize and provide as many opportunities as possible and it might not always fit into each family's schedule.
They also may have April 24th available for a grouping of 15 kids so this might be an additional opportunity for kids who miss the first one. Only 15 kids can attend each session as additional volunteers from the community have already signed up ahead of time. I will be clarifying with my point person to see if the April 24th date is still open and if so I will send out a separate signup genius for that set of 15 kids. With that being said please only sign up for one of the 2 dates so that most of the kids get a chance to come. We have about 35 participants in CSC so this will get most kids that additional hour if logistically they are able to make it happen.
If you have not signed up for either the April 3 or April 24th date there are still some open spots left on the signup genius.
If some spots remain open and parents want to also volunteer, that works as well. We will probably need at least 1 additional parent volunteer at each of those events so let me know if you are interested!
As always, keep me posted if you have any questions and/or comments.
Thanks-
Amanda

Yearbook 📖
Meadow Lane Families,
We have teamed up again this year with TreeRing Corporation to produce our yearbook. TreeRing provides the opportunity for each family to customize 2 pages for their student. On an easy-to-use online site, you may add your own pictures, share memories, or write a personalized dedication to your student. If you have more than one student, you can customize individual yearbooks for each child. If you purchase one yearbook for your family, you can include all your students on these 2 pages.
The yearbook is $17.33 this year. You can receive 10% off by placing your order by September 30th. Should you choose to create the two extra customized pages, there is no additional charge. Participating is optional and a fun way of making the yearbook special for your student.
To order, go to the website http://www.treering.com/validate and enter our school’s passcode: 101457546681864. The deadline for ordering and personalizing is March 25th, 2024.
We also have folders created for you to upload pictures that may be used in the general yearbook. After logging in, click on My Photos, then My Shared Folders, and finally the green Add Photos button. Choose the appropriate folder for your student’s class or the club/event for which you wish to share.
If you have any questions, please email Ms. Menner at samenner@olatheschools.org

ONE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE 🥫
OPS Rebranding Campaign
Have you heard the big news?! Olathe Public Schools is embarking on a journey to update the district brand and they want to hear from YOU! Superintendent Dr. Brent Yeager kicked off this process, with a personal message inviting all to share their insights and ideas through this process focused on refreshing our district's identity to better reflect our vibrant community (video linked here).
We need your creative input. Think about the symbols, colors, and words that best represent our school and share your ideas. Here’s how you can contribute:
Social Media: Post your ideas using #OPSRebrand.
Community Gallery: Submit your thoughts on our rebranding webpage by completing the survey (www.olatheschools.org/rebrand).
Also, we’re involving our students in this creative venture! Classroom activity sheets are available on the rebrand website, offering a fun way for students to engage with this project.
Your participation is key in shaping a brand that truly reflects the Olathe spirit. Your voice in this project is not just welcomed, it’s essential. The collective input from our Mustang community will ensure that our new brand resonates with those at the heart of our district – you and our students. Let's make this a collective success!

The Imagination Library of Kansas
The Imagination Library of Kansas is coming statewide. What is the Imagination Library? Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is open to any child in Kansas from birth to their 5th birthday. Children receive free, age-appropriate books mailed directly to their home every month. Our goal is for every Kansas child to nurture a love for reading that will continue to enrich their lives throughout school and beyond! You can learn more about it here. Information will be coming soon from the district as to how we will support enrollment in this program.
Olathe Athletics: Regarding Elementary Students
Please see the attached document for the Olathe Public Schools Department of Athletics and Activities regarding elementary students attending middle and high school activities and athletic events.
2024 - 2025 School Year Changes
As a reminder, we will see a few changes in the new year and next school year.
Open Enrollment Beginning in 2024 for 24-25 School Year
Kansas House Bill 2567 states all public-school districts must allow non-resident students who reside in Kansas to enroll in and attend any school if the district has the capacity and this takes effect in the 2024-25 school year. Our policy includes an in-district transfer period starting Jan. 4, followed by a district employee transfer period starting March 1. District enrollment capacity must be determined by May 1 and posted on the district website by June 1. Non-resident applications would be accepted June 1-30, followed by a non-resident lottery selection process July 1-15. For more information, click here.
Start and End Times Beginning in 2024-25 School Year
The following start and end time schedule will begin in August 2024.
- High schools and Prairie Learning Center, 7:40 a.m.-2:40 p.m.
- Middle schools and Heartland Early Childhood Center, 8:20 a.m.-3:20 p.m.
- Elementary schools and Harmony Early Childhood Center, 8:55 a.m.-3:55 p.m.
The district understands this change will impact every family differently. Please be on the lookout for more information on solutions impacting each level and the transportation restrictions in place for this year that will be removed. The Board of Education approval of this new schedule during their December meeting gave the district, families and staff a full semester and summer to make necessary plans and adjustments before school starts in August 2024. For more information, click here.
