Classroom Updates
Kindergarten
Hello Kindergarten Families,
Hello October!! This month in Kindergarten we will continue to work on our K-2 essential skills which will focus on working and playing safely with others. In ELA we will continue to work in our Wonders curriculum in Units 2 and 3, learning new sight words, new letters and sounds, and new grammar skills. In our Heggerty Phonemic Awareness curriculum we will continue to work on phonemic awareness skills that will help students to develop decoding and encoding skills to help their reading skills grow! In Eureka Math we will be finishing up Module 1 on counting and cardinality and begin working in Module 2 focusing on analyzing, describing, and creating two- and three- dimensional shapes by considering their attributes.
As we seeing the weather changing and colder temperatures outside, please make sure your child has the appropriate clothing and shoes for the colder weather.
1st Grade
We are in full swing with curriculum. In reading we will be in our second unit of Wonders. Our new phonics skills will focus on learning beginning and end blends. We will be working on sight words and building reading fluency. In math, we will be working on addition and subtraction relationships. In science, we will continue to study plant and animal defenses, and dig deeper into our big question “What do plants and animals need to do to survive”?. In social studies we will be learning about civics and what it means to be a good citizen. Please be sure to spend a few minutes each night reading with your child! We look forward to discussing your child’s progress with you at conferences.
2nd Grade
Second Grade will be starting unit 2 in Reading. We will be looking at expository texts as well as fables. Our grammar skills will be focused all around nouns. We will be writing an expository text. In math we will be continuing to look at place value. We will look at modeling place value, expressing place value, and composing/decomposing numbers. In science students are learning about plants and animals. Our Social Studies focus is all about culture and how culture changes. Please continue to read with your child at home as well as practice math facts! Make sure to check the Google Site for weekly updates!
3rd Grade
We have been working on multiplication and division in math and will continue to work to work on those. Please practice multiplication facts with students. We have been working on 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10’s. In reading we will be begin working on the author’s point of view and identifying the theme in a story. We are still working on Economics in Social Studies and force and motion in Science.
4th Grade
Fourth grade is beginning a new Math module about place value to prepare students for multidigit multiplication and division. Now is a great time to shore up those basic multiplication facts! In Reading, students will be continuing to learn about main idea and details, the theme of stories, plus irregular and regular nouns. In Science, we are designing wind turbines and writing argumentative statements about energy conversion. Social Studies will begin an exploration of the first people who lived in Colorado. We look forward to seeing all of you the week of October 14th for our Showcases of Student Learning!
5th Grade
Hello Fifth Grade Families,
September has gone by quickly as we dug into academics and continued to work on following our behavior expectations. We are especially working on using kind and empathetic words and maintaining appropriate volume levels.
October is sure to be a busy month, even with a week off in the middle! Here is what we have coming up:
Math: We will wrap up Module 1, focusing on place value concepts crucial for multiplication and division with whole numbers, and begin Module 2. This will focus on addition and subtraction with fractions! As always, please help your child practice multiplication facts at home. This practice will make tackling more complex multiplication problems much easier.
Science: We will be wrapping up our investigations about the Patterns of Earth and Sky and our exploration of stars and constellations. This will include an opportunity to visit the Air Force Academy Planetarium for our own trip through the stars!
Reading: During October, we will cover the genres of expository text and folklore. Students will also continue to set and track personal goals. To enhance their fluency and boost their reading confidence, please ensure your child reads for at least 20 minutes each night. It is especially great if several of those minutes are spent reading out loud to a sibling, family pet, houseplant, or stuffed animal!
Thank you for your continued support and involvement during this school year. We love being a part of your child’s education team!
