Muskego Lakes Family Newsletter
October 4th, 2024
Dear Muskego Lakes Families,
For those of you who may not know, I absolutely love being a middle school principal. I think it’s the best job in the world.
Students at this age are brave yet sensitive. They test limits yet crave boundaries. They have an eagerness for independence and yet they also still long for adult reassurance. They experience an extraordinary amount of change during this time of their life- physically, emotionally, & socially- yet still seem to find their strengths, their confidence, and their voice. They show up each day with an honesty and vulnerability that I admire. And if we are getting it right, they begin to believe in themselves the way we do, aware that they are wildly capable.
I also love middle school because it really, really matters. It’s a time in young people’s lives that ends up, in many ways, setting them on a trajectory toward their future hopes and dreams.
In a publication titled “The Forgotten Middle,” research suggests, “the level of academic achievement that students attain by eighth grade has a larger impact on their college and career readiness than any other single factor.” And the findings also reveal that students who are not on target academically by the time they complete 8th grade are at a significant risk because “the impact of not meeting academic benchmarks by 8th grade may be nearly irreversible.”
Pretty wild, right??
I share this with you not to alarm you but rather to let you know that we’ve got this. We get to come alongside your child for four years here at Muskego Lakes. And we will not give up on them.
We get to help them problem solve when they struggle getting to class on time. We get to teach them how to stay organized. We get to help them figure out how they learn best. We get to encourage them to try again when they fail. We get to coach them when friendships feel tricky. We get to admire their courage when they try out for a sport they’ve never played before. We get to be there for them to lean on when life feels heavy. And we get to support them until they experience success here.
At Muskego Lakes, we are all in for your children. We recognize how important these formative years are, and we will do just about anything we can to be there for our students and their families.
(And by the way, we are also very confident that after four years here at Muskego Lakes, your child will be ready for high school and beyond.)
In partnership

Principal

Fall Conference Information and Sign-Up Link
Our staff is looking forward to being able to connect with you at our upcoming fall conferences! Each night, conferences will be between 4pm-8pm. We will have conferences on the following dates:
Thursday, October 17th, 2024 - both Virtual and In-Person options
Wednesday, October 23rd, 2024- both Virtual and In-Person options
We will be using the platform "Meet the Teacher" to schedule these conferences, and each conference will be 10 minutes long with 2-minute transitions in between.
We will once again offer flexibility based on feedback with both in person and virtual conferences. If you have more than one child at MLMS, you will be able to book conferences for all with the same login. You will be able to choose from these options:
An entire virtual conference night
An entire in-person conference night
A combination of both in-person and virtual conferences, each on a different date. For example, you could sign up for October 17th for in-person, and sign up for October 23rd for virtual.
As we shared earlier this week in an IC blast, the sign-up open ed for all families on Wednesday, October 2nd at 7:00 am. The sign-up will close at 3pm the day before each specific conference day . This means:
The night of Thursday, October 17th will close on Wednesday, October 16th at 3:00 pm.
The night of Wednesday, October 23rd will close on Tuesday, October 22nd at 3:00 pm
If you are unable to find a time that works for you or a teacher doesn’t have availability, you will be able to join that teacher’s waitlist on Meet the Teacher or reach out directly to the teacher to set a time to connect regarding your child. We hope this flexibility is helpful to you and your family!

For 5th and 6th grade students
The 5th and 6th grade teachers teach either math/science or literacy/social studies. You will be able to sign up for those teachers only once, but will be able to talk about both classes during your conference.
For 7th and 8th grade students
If your account shows that your child has the same teacher for more than one class, PLEASE ONLY SIGN UP WITH THAT TEACHER ONCE. You will be able to talk about both classes during your conference.
How to book conferences with your child’s high school world language or math teacher (if applicable)
If your child attends Muskego High School for a world language or math class, please look for separate communication from the high school regarding setting up a conference with their teacher
Need an interpreter?
Contact Mary Amaya with your request at mary.amaya@muskegonorway.org or 262-971-1860.
How to invite a 2nd parent/guardian to the conference
Once you have made your bookings (or when you later log in and go to My Bookings) click on the Invite Parent/Guardian link at the top of the list of your bookings. If you have already sent an invitation this link will show as Manage Invites instead. A maximum of two guests can attend the conference at the same time.
Need more time with a teacher?
Meet the Teacher holds firm to the start and end time of each scheduled 10 minute conference. The conference timer begins at the scheduled start time, not when the family joins the conference. When the 10 minutes are up, the conference ends automatically. This is a feature of Meet the Teacher that our teachers cannot manipulate. The benefit of this feature is that teachers will not get backed up causing conference start times to move back. Families can count on every scheduled conference starting on time. If your conference ends and you need more time, please reach out to your child's teacher to schedule another time.
If you weren’t able to sign up for a teacher you’d like to meet with.
If you’d like to schedule a conference after booking has closed, or if you cannot attend conferences during the designated dates and times, please contact the teacher directly to set up an appointment. They are happy to set-up time to connect with you regarding your child.

The District must report all non-compliant students to Waukesha County in October.
Wisconsin has made two recent changes that directly affect 7th grade students:

Requiring the Tdap “booster” at the start of 7th grade (previously required at the start of sixth grade. (2023-2024 update)
What has NOT changed:
Established list of required vaccinations
Exemption options for personal or religious conviction, or health reasons (requires health provider signature)
If your student has been identified as non-compliant please do one of the following
Submit a WAIVER - If you choose not to have your child immunized, or plan to in the future but need more time, please complete the waiver section (Step 4) of the Student Immunization Record, sign the form, and return the completed form to the Muskego Lakes Health Office at ml-health-office@muskegonorway.org.

Every student at MLMS has period each day dedicated in their schedule for homeroom. At MLMS, homeroom is a time in student's day to ensure they have time to:
- Learn about school-wide expectations and events on Mondays
- Checking grades and assignments
- Meet with teachers
- Retake assessment
- Work on your class work so that you have less to take home.
So this past week, we took time in for our homeroom lesson to explain this to the students with our expectations for what it should look and sound like during that time.
Shown below are the upcoming co-curricular events at Muskego Lakes.
If a change occurs from the date of this newsletter, we post on Infinite Campus in the announcement section. We commit to letting students/families know about changes and updating Infinite Campus announcements as soon as possible once we've been notified of a change.
