Mission Elementary
Riding the Wave of Excellence!
November 3, 2024
Dear Mission Families,
This was an exciting week! Our Superintendent, Dr. Julie Vitale, visited Mission Elementary, and students proudly shared their learning achievements and projects, showcasing their hard work and dedication. This visit reminded us of how important it is to ask your child how their day went and to celebrate their successes together!
Picture Make-up day for students who were not present during our original picture day in September and preschool students who attend on Tuesday and Friday is this Friday, November 8. You may send payment to school on the 8th or you may pay directly online. Below is the link and code you'll need.

The window for purchasing the Device Protection Plan closed on September 30th, but for a limited time, OUSD is offering you a chance to still enroll. The cost of repairs for Chromebooks can range from $40 to $400, but for only $20 per school year, the Plan provides coverage for up to two incidents of accidental damage or theft per student.
To purchase the plan, please register on the www.myschoolbucks.com app. BE SURE TO SELECT OCEANSIDE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT (written out) AS YOUR DISTRICT. Then, click on this link to determine which category your student falls under to determine your next steps.
This enrollment window for the Device Protection Plan is limited so we encourage you to sign up as soon as possible. Invest in your child's learning experience and ensure their Chromebook is protected throughout the school year.
This is a reminder that Daylight Saving Time ended this weekend! If you haven't done so, remember to set your clocks back one hour. We hope you enjoy the extra hour and that the transition is smooth for your family.

Inclusion and Belonging Assembly
We are pleased to inform you that in November, students in grades 3-5 will be participating in a two-part assembly focused on promoting inclusion and belonging. These assemblies are presented and designed by our district's Department of Equity and Inclusion to help our students understand how they can contribute to a safe, welcoming, and respectful school environment for everyone.
The focus of these assemblies will be on understanding how to interrupt and respond to harmful language, including slurs and speech connected to stereotypes, bias, and discrimination. Through guided activities and discussions, students will gain skills in identifying and addressing these behaviors and understanding the impact they can have on others.
Our goal is to foster a community of empathy and respect where every student feels valued and included. We believe that with education and open conversation, we can empower our students to stand up for themselves and others in positive, constructive ways.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions about the assemblies. We appreciate your support in helping us create a nurturing environment for all students.

A Safety Tool with Instructional Benefits
Oceanside Unified is utilizing a state-of-the-art cloud-based camera system across our schools. This new camera system combines machine learning and artificial intelligence to deliver actionable insights from video data, significantly enhancing our campus security.
Installations will soon begin over the next few weeks and have been successfully completed at a number of other schools across OUSD, including two successful pilot schools last year.
Mission Elementary will use an advanced-technology system that offers a variety of benefits including enhanced accessibility of the instruction being delivered, and the capability to deliver an emergency notification system to every classroom.
This enhancement serves as an update to our current bell and intercom system. Each classroom teacher will have a device on a lanyard that amplifies sound throughout the classroom during every lesson. Every student, no matter where they sit, will be able to clearly hear the teacher and information being taught. The teacher has the ability to activate the camera and alarm system in the event of an emergency.
We will provide updates on the progress of this project. OUSD's goal is to complete installation by January 2025.

Please remember that student devices are loaned to students and we ask that you encourage students to take great care of their device. Adding stickers or vandalizing devices in any way can lead to unnecessary repair or replacement costs for parents. It also saves a lot of time when students bring their device to class fully charged. We appreciate your cooperation and support in taking care of the devices.
Responsible Use of Technology
We want to emphasize the importance of monitoring and limiting your child's screen time and social media usage. While technology and social media can offer valuable educational and social opportunities, they also have the potential to become a significant distraction and, if not managed carefully, can have negative effects on your child's development. Below are 2 tips to support responsible use of technology.
TIP Number 1
Set Time Limits: Establish daily or weekly screen time limits based on your child's age and needs. Ensure they have enough time for other activities like homework, physical exercise, and social interactions.
TIP Number 2
Monitor Content: Regularly check the content your child is interacting with, whether it's through apps, games, or social media platforms. Ensure it's age-appropriate and safe.
