Be aware of the drills we practice throughout the school year...
School Safety Drills
It is important to know that our school does many safety drills throughout the
course of the school year. These include lockdown and evacuation drills, as well as fire and tornado drills. Our staff is ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) trained. Please take note how we perform our drills throughout the school year so that you may further discuss with your child.
Fire Drills - Fire drills happen every other month. All classrooms exit out their designated fire escape once the alarm is activated. If a child is going to or from the restroom and is not near the rest of the class, he/she may have to join another class to exit the building. The Oregon FD does visit during at least one fire drill.
Lockdown/Evacuation Drills – Lockdown/evacuation drills are scheduled opposite the fire drills with our SRO (School Resource Officer). The SRO provides age-appropriate ALICE classes to each grade level, as well as staff. Teachers are notified in advance so not to alarm anyone. They further breakdown the training as it pertains to their respective classrooms. In addition, the SRO and staff perform evacuation drills from the recess grounds using different scenarios.
Should an actual school-wide evacuation take place, the rally points are either the Prince of Peace Church on Pickle or the Oregon Library on South Coy. Buses would then transport the students/staff to the GAF grounds for parents to pick up.
Tornado Drills - Tornado drills start in the spring. During these drills students move down to the lower-level hallways or bathrooms and hunker down. The local county emergency management has visited to provide best practices.
In the case of any true emergency, you will be notified. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact Officer Brad or Mrs. Molnar.

Attention 4th Graders....
This past week I had a handful of classroom lessons where I was able to talk to the kiddos about feelings, emotions, and big deal vs little deal. Kindergarten students will continue to have lessons throughout the next few weeks on big deal vs. little deal and how we can solve little deals ourselves. For our big deals, those are things that are usually an emergency and we need help from an adult. I encourage you to use this language at home with your students and see if they can tell you the difference between a big deal and a little deal.
I recently sent out a Bright Arrow message to all 4th grade parents about Ram Fit Club sign-up. This will start on the morning of Sep. 18 at 8:20 and be every Wednesday morning for 6 weeks. I only have 15 spots open and currently have 5 students signed up. If your student would like to be part of that club, please refer to that email or email me directly and I can send you the link.
Lastly, Oregon City Schools is part of a Weekend Food Bag program that allows us to offer families a bag full of shelf-stable items once a month for free. Depending on family size and need we can do more than one bag. These bags will be brought directly to the school on specific days each month and can then be picked up by a parent in the lobby or sent home (with older students) on the bus. If you're interested in being part of this monthly offering please email me at kwilson@oregonschools.org and I can get you on the list. Our first pick-up from the food bank will be on September 18 and distribution will then be the next two days, the 19th and 20th.
Thank you all and I wish you a wonderful weekend!

Happy Friday!
Our third week of school has been eventful here in the nurse’s office. We have seen an increase in strep throat at Coy and an increase in COVID throughout the district. There is currently no exclusion/isolation for COVID. Please follow our fever policies. Make sure that you read through the District Elementary School Handbook Illness section starting on page 20 of the handbook. These are exclusion guidelines related to Illness that are followed throughout the district.
We will continue with Vision and Hearing screenings for 1st and 3rd grade and all new students. Please be on the lookout for vision results to come in your child’s folder.
Our Dental Out Reach Program will be coming to Coy Elementary on September 9, 2024. If you wish to have your child receive these services, please complete the paperwork below and return to school.
All incoming Kindergartners and New Students are required to have ALL health-related forms turned into the Nurse's office by end of school day TODAY September 6, 2024 (15 day grace period from beginning of school) to avoid exclusion from school for non-compliance, which are unexcused absences. If you have upcoming appointments that fall outside of the timeframe, please make sure the Nurse is aware before the end of the day today. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to the Nurse Office.
**If your student is missing any paperwork, they will receive a letter in their folder again today. If still missing mandatory paperwork on Monday, they will not be able to attend school until all paperwork is turned in.**
