Shout out to 4th Graders for their leadership
Amazing fourth graders showed iniative and developed a proposal on a school newspaper. On their own accord, they met with Mrs. DeLuca during lunch to present their proposal. These students received a big yes from Mrs. DeLuca and will be working on a school newspaper for TFS. Great initiative by our amazing fourth graders. GO HAWKS!
Learning in 4th Grade
This week we started our Human Body science unit. Know,
Wonder, Learn chartS were used to begin discussion. Students read with a partner about
the different muscle types and built their own model of a finger that moves!
Our SEL lesson this week focused on being assertive. Students learned the
difference between assertive, passive, and aggressive. We discussed how being
assertive is a skill you can use when solving problems, asking for help, standing up for
yourself or others, and making friends.
Thanks to our Nurses for our first harvest from our Hydroponic garden
Second Step - Skills Instruction
We want your child to be as successful as possible at school. Success in school is not just about reading and math. It is also about knowing how to learn and how to get along with others. We will be using the Second Step program in your child’s classroom to teach these critical skills.
The Second Step program teaches skills in the following four areas:
1. Skills for Learning: Students gain skills to help themselves learn, including how to focus their attention, listen carefully, use self-talk to stay on task, and be assertive when asking for help with schoolwork.
2. Empathy: Students learn to identify and understand their own and others’ feelings. Students also learn how to take another’s perspective and how to show compassion.
3. Emotion Management: Students learn specific skills for calming down when experiencing strong feelings, such as anxiety or anger.
4. Problem Solving: Students learn a process for solving problems with others in a positive way.

Dear TFS Families,
Thank you to our TFS Families for the overwhelming support by attending our TFS Open House. This year we improved safety by hiring two police officers to support the traffic and walking to our school. Thank you to all of our educators who helped welcome our amazing families.

Lockdown🚒🚒
Friday we practiced an announced routine lockdown which involved doors locked, shades down, lights off and sitting in the corner of the classroom quietely. Through the year, we will practice a variety of lockdowns that may involve students and staff moving to different classes and areas of the building. The most important way that your child can keep him/herself safe is to listen and follow the directions of the adults at all times.
i-Ready Diagnostic Assessments
I-Ready parent reports for the first trimester will be given to parents during the first set of parent/teacher conferences.
Acadience
Acadience parent reports will also be distributed during the fall parent/teacher conferences.
Birthdays
As we did last year, throughout the year we celebrate birthdays at TFS through daily announcements on the intercom wishing students a Happy Birthday and inviting them to the Nurse's Office to pick up their birthday bags which contain non-food birthday items. Students love coming to the Office as we cheer them on for their birthdays. We celebrate all summer birthdays in June. Due to the number of students with medical conditions and food allergies, it is important that food is not sent to school unless teachers explicity ask for a food item as a result of a school project (eg., apples in K). This is also aligned with our focus on Wellness.
Communications
Please stay connected to TFS via our facebook page, instragram, website and these Hawks Happenings (sent every two weeks to families).

Updates for families
1) At a first Staff Meeting, we welcomed Detective Vanderside to review our avoid, deny and defend framework with all educators. If you want to learn more details about this framework, please feel free to reach out to the TFS Office at 889-1577.
2) We had our first Safety Team Meeting (each month we have meetings). We reviewed our annual Emegency Operations Plan, watched how to use a fire extinguisher video and discussed feedback from the first two drills we had this year.
3) Michelle Etchells, Hailey Fallon, Brooke Ross and Julie DeLuca completed two hours of of online Crowd Manager training. This training reviews how to ensure we prepare for large crowd gatherings at our school including school assemblys.
Literacy Focus
2nd grade focus on Literacy
Wit and Wisdom:
- Various activities examining the poem 'Weather" By Eve Merriam: Notice and Wonder, identify change in the poem, practice fluency
- Used visual art 'Paris Street, Rainy Day,' 'Hunters in the Snow,' 'Bathers at Asnieres,' and 'Autumn Landscape' to Notice and Wonder, examine the use of color, identify artist's purpose in color choice and which season each piece depicted
- Vocabulary: change, flick
- Listening goal: Notice the whole message
- Fluency introduction and practice. When we read fluently we focus on accuracy, prasing, rate, expression and performance
- created Module 1 binders to capture our Response, Vocabulary and Knowledge journals
- partner reading 'Weather' to prepare for our performance on Monday!
Here is a Fluency FAQ sheet created by our Literacy Coordinators about the importance of Fluency.
Fundations
- review trick words: they, one, was, said, you, your
- Words of the day: flock, blend
- ck, c, k rule. These are all ways to spell the sound /k/. We use CK at the end of a word immediately after a short vowel (sock), we use K at the end when the /k/ sound is not immediately after the vowel (milk). We use K at the beginning when it is followed by e, i, or y. (kite) For most other beginning /k/ words, we use C. (cost)
- closed syllables instruction - closed syllables have just one short vowel and are closed in (followed) by a consonant. ex. at, milk, sock, rug. (Not closed examples - boat, meal, go)
- sound, word and sentence dictation practice
