Your Lister News from the Lister News Team
Year 11 Countdown
There are very few days left until the final GCSE exams for year 11. This is shown in the picture, which is being shared by English teachers as a way to prompt their students into working harder and longer to get to those final GCSE outcomes. There are lots of intervention sessions available after school and before school for Lister students. Whilst the majority of these sessions are targeted, most teachers will be happy to include volunteer students who want to get on with some extra work.
Here is a list of supportive strategies that you can use to help your child:
- Establish a quiet and dedicated study space.
- Minimize distractions during study time.
- Offer encouragement and positive reinforcement.
- Assist in creating a revision timetable.
- Ensure they are taking regular breaks and maintaining a healthy balance.
- Help them prioritize tasks and manage deadlines.
- Emphasize the importance of consistent, short revision sessions rather than last-minute cramming.
- Help them use effective revision techniques (e.g., flashcards, mind maps, practice papers).
- Limit Screen Time:
- Encourage them to limit the time spent on phones and social media.
- Offer to take phones away for periods of solid revision, so that they do not have to resist the urge to use their phones.
- Help them use technology as a revision tool, not a distraction.
Lastly - Celebrate Successes!
- Acknowledge and celebrate their efforts and achievements, no matter how small.
- Reassure them that you are proud of them, regardless of the outcome.
British Science Week 2025
This year for British Science Week, our students in Years 7, 8, and 9 engaged in hands-on activities under the theme of "Change and Adapt". Year 7s designed and tested seed models to explore plant dispersal, linking to their studies on reproduction and adaptation. Year 8s investigated the effects of "acid rain" on cress seed growth, connecting their understanding of acids, bases to the impact on the environment. Year 9s built wind turbines from household materials, revisiting their knowledge on energy resources and linking it to real-world sustainability challenges. The feedback from students overall has been very positive. It was great to see them enjoy their lessons, tackle challenges creatively, and (hopefully!) deepen their appreciation for science in the world around them. If the opportunity arises, please speak to students about their British Science Week experience.
Lister Students Visit the University of Essex
A group of Year 9 students recently visited the University of Essex, where they got a glimpse into university life. During their trip, they learned about the different subjects they could study and gained insight into the costs of higher education. They also took part in a guided campus tour, exploring the facilities and student spaces. Students were amazed at the sports facilities the university had on offer! To round off the visit, they enjoyed an engaging sports psychology taster session, where they discovered how psychology plays a key role in athletic performance. The trip provided an exciting opportunity for the students to start thinking about their future education and career paths. The university was very impressed by all the students at Lister Community School!
Lister School Policies
Much of what we do as a school has to fit within the umbrella of the NCL Trust. As with any large organisation, policies need to be developed and used as a means of ensuring that all of our stakeholders across the trust have clear guidance and rules to follow and trust in. Here is the policies' page of the Lister website, which also has a link to the NCL policies' page.
Food Bank Coming up on the 2nd of April!
The School food bank runs before every half term/full term holiday, so all students have access to food over their holidays. Students can come and take what they like, within reason, apart from rice and pasta. The food bank is open to any student who may require it. The next food bank for our students will be on Wednesday 2nd of April, in the training room near the main reception.
This will start at 3:30pm.
* Not all food is halal. Please check for ingredients.
* We cannot cater for allergens, as the food is donated to us and has allergens within the products.
* The food bank is completely run by volunteers, so please be patient with staff.
