A note from Principal, Dr. Lisa Gruman
Hello Northwest Community,
This will be a quick section for the week. We are working hard to have a strong finish to the 3rd quarter. We have all block days next week and no school on Friday for a teacher workday to close the quarter. Our Spring Sports have navigated the weather this week and are working hard at the start of their seasons!
Congratulations to our Boys' Basketball Team who won their Sub-State game tonight and qualified to the State Tournament!! We are so excited to cheer them on through these upcoming games! Proud of our Cougars!
Congratulations to Adam Hageman - State Champion Wrestler!! We are so proud of Adam's many accomplishments this season and during his time in the wrestling program at NW! We had several wrestlers finish in the Top 5!!
Shout-out to Brooklyn Peck for representing Northwest at State Bowling!! She finished 6th with an outstanding series today!
Congratulations to our DECA program and our top 10 finishers at their competition in Manhattan this week! Luke Chalfie and Will Fandel qualified for the DECA International Career Development Conference - what an amazing accomplishment!!
We had many students participate in the Career Fair at the CAA today.

Winter weather is here and we want to be sure families are as ready as possible for possible schedule changes or inclement weather cancellations. As of December 5, 2024, the Shawnee Mission School District has updated its inclement weather plans to include Plan C- which includes a 2-hour delay option. This new option aligns us with our neighboring districts in Johnson County and will facilitate common decision-making with regard to inclement weather. Please review the district’s inclement weather procedures on this website: https://www.smsd.org/families/weather

Note from Athletic Director, Angelo Giacalone
SMNW, the HOME OF EVERYDAY CHAMPIONS, currently is winding down the winter sports season while spring sports are hard at work. We do not have our normal news (with schedules) as the upcoming week will just be 6A State Basketball Championships in Wichita. At the time this correspondence is being written we have some highlights that include:
- Adam Hageman capped a season to remember on the wrestling mat, going 50-0, winning 6A State Championship at 175 lbs, while earning a single season State pin record (46) in the State of Kansas to camp a stellar career of 151 victories.
- Brooklyn Peck travels to Wichita in hopes of getting on the podium for 6A State Bowling to culminate her already fine season of being crowned, SM District Champ, Sunflower League Champ and 6A Regional Champ.
- Our boys and girls basketball teams still are competing for an opportunity to “punch their ticket” to go to Wichita. The boys will be in the Substate finals hosting Blue Valley Northwest (Friday evening).
Best wishes to all our student athletes as they continue to be EveryDay Champions.
