St. Columba's Primary School
NEWSLETTER | TERM 2 | WEEK 10 | 20 JUNE 2024
“For this new morning with its light, for rest and shelter of the night,
for health and food, for love and friends.
For everything Thy goodness sends,
we thank Thee, dearest Lord. Amen.”
Dear Parents and Carers,
We are almost at the end of a very long term. The students have worked well and are to be congratulated on how well they are finishing the term. I am sure that they are looking forward to a shorter term in Term 3.
Our prayers and thoughts are with Mrs Jenaway (who was our school finance officer and secretary for many years), as her mother passed away late last week. May the memory of Mrs Jenaway’s mother always be with her.
There will be two significant celebrations before the end of this term.
Next week on Thursday, 27June there will be a school farewell liturgy for Monsignor at 10:20am
in Kalyara Mia. Parents and Carers are welcome to attend. Monsignor will be retiring from the role of Parish Priest and we wish him well with his retirement. The staff will then celebrate morning tea with him and he will be presented with gifts from the staff, P&F and school.
The second event we will celebrate is NAIDOC week. These celebrations culminate on Friday, 28 June with free dress in NAIDOC colours and a Prayer Service at 9:00am in Kalyara Mia.
Our school cross country team had their interschool meet last Tuesday. While I was in attendance I saw some outstanding races by several of our students. Everyone is to be congratulated on the way they participated from start to finish. It was great to see everyone trying so hard in their race.
Please note that school reports will go live on Wednesday, 26 June. If you do not have login details, please contact the school front office.
A reminder that Monday, 15 July is a pupil free day and that students return to school on
Tuesday, 16 July.
God bless and keep safe.

Principal

Allergy Aware School
We are seeking your help to support the students in our school who are at risk of anaphylaxis.
Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that is potentially life-threatening. The most common causes of anaphylaxis in schools are food and insect allergies. The only way to prevent allergic reactions is to avoid being exposed to the allergen.
Our school is supporting students at risk of anaphylaxis in the following ways:
• training staff,
• encouraging students with food allergy to wash their hands before and after eating,
• encouraging students to wash their hands after eating something their classmate/friend is allergic to,
• teaching students not to share food with friends who have food allergy,
• teaching students the importance of getting help immediately if their friend with allergy looks sick,
• educating students about allergies and anaphylaxis, and
• teaching students that teasing someone with an allergy is not acceptable behaviour.
Food allergy is now common in school aged children. Children can be allergic to any food, and it is not possible to completely remove all foods from our school. To help manage food allergies, our school is following the National Allergy Council Best Practice Guidelines (2021) which do not recommend banning foods as this is difficult to enforce and can bring a false sense of safety. Instead, we have chosen not to stock nuts and nut products in our canteen as these foods are not staple foods in the diet. We request that parents also consider not sending nuts to school, especially for younger students.
We ask you to support the school’s risk minimisation strategies outlined so that we can increase safety and provide an environment that meets the needs of all our students.
