OES Family Update

A Place Where Performance Elicits Pride
Message from the Principal
It was great to see many of our families and students at Conferences last week. I know it is not the case in every district to see the amount of parental involvement in our school, so I wanted to THANK YOU for your continued investment in being involved in your child's education. A partnership with the families is not possible without a vested interest and effort from all involved to make it a positive experience for our children. Our staff did a phenomenal job preparing for and making conferences a meaningful experience. This involved many hours during and after school to prepare information. artifacts of learning, and activities/ideas that can best support your child.
One common question I got was the change in emphasis on Guided Reading levels as a benchmarking tool at OES. The latest research on how kids learn how to read and guidance provided in the Illinois Literacy Plan- https://www.isbe.net/Documents/IL-Comp-Literacy-Plan-2024.pdf , also provides guidance that Guided Reading is not a recommended practice in alignment with current research. We have replaced that by continuing to use assessments such as MAP, Fastbridge, and classroom assessments to measure student progress. We are continuing to examine all of our curricular resources to determine the best course of action moving forward.
I appreciate the over 100 responses from families in regards to their experience thus far. I will share the summary charts below, but I am pleased to see an overwhelming majority of families are satisfied with how we are communicating and the experience we are providing. We will continue to use this information to find areas of growth and continue to strive to be the very best Elementary School in the area!
I do want to extend another invitation to our monthly Parent/Principal Advisory Meeting coming up on Monday at 5:30 at OES. RSVP here- https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf7lXvwEGzJlfXOYmHXQTVigoPqRIin6tphJpfqxyrgqHgFOQ/viewform?usp=sf_link

Halloween October 31
We do celebrate Halloween at OES. We will be hosting a costume parade at 2:10 PM on 10/31 (weather permitting) along Hawk drive. Parents are invited to attend and line the sidewalk at the front of the building.
Grade levels will parade out from youngest to oldest with PreK starting at 2:10. See the picture below for the exact route.
Students are permitted to wear their costumes during the parade. We will be having our monthly "Dollar Day" that day- so if your child wishes to wear their costume all day long, a $1 donation to our PBIS fund for student recognition programs is appreciated. Those not wishing to wear their costume all day can change before the parade.
Homeroom teachers will share any information about class activities/parties.
