Wayland Union Board of Education
Work Session Summary
Thursday, January 27, 2021
The Wayland Union School Board of Education held their January board work session on Monday, January 24, 2022 at WUHS Media Center. The board selected three candidates to interview for the position vacated by Jason Shane: former BOE President, Cinnamon Mellema; Jeff Koon; and former WUS Superintendent, Norman Taylor. The interviews will take place on Monday, February 7, 2022 at 5:30 p.m., ahead of the regularly scheduled meeting at Baker Elementary. The appointed candidate will hold the seat until the results of the November election. The six other candidates who expressed interest were Ken Bos, Aubree Clark, Bradley Geers, Anthony Gutierrez, Derek Mulder, and Michael Warren.
Other business included discussion of recommendations to limit large group gatherings to less than 100. Peter Zondervan suggested giving Superintendent Hinds the ability to make these decisions based on a case by case basis. Janel Hott disagrees with canceling events because she said there are large events happening outside of school already.
The board reviewed their operating procedures which were done one year ago, but President Cassini felt it was a good idea to review them ahead of bringing on a new board member.
In new business, the Board heard a proposal to purchase new cafeteria tables for Pine Street Elementary from the Food Service Fund. In old business, the board approved the following: adding a fine and performing arts committee; amendments to the 21-22 General Fund, Food Service and Student Activities budgets; and purchase of two new school buses using Casino funds. Location changes for meetings were approved to move from the Administration Building to the WUHS Media Center on 2/21, 3/28, 4/25, 5/23, 6/13 and 6/27.
A closed session was held to plan for the Superintendent's 2022 Evaluation.
*Please note: This is a summary of the meeting. Official board minutes will be approved at the next regular board meeting on Monday, February 7, 2021.
