Superintendent's Update
February 2025 | From Superintendent Podraza
Dear Families and Caregivers of South Kingstown Public Schools,
As we reach the middle of this school year, I want to both acknowledge and share some insights about the emotional journey that students often experience throughout the academic year. While research by Ellen Moir originally focused on educators, these emotional phases can be very similar for our students as they progress through their school year.
Students typically experience several emotional phases throughout a school year: initial excitement (Anticipation), adjustment to routines (Survival), mid-year challenges (Disillusionment), renewed energy after winter break (Rejuvenation), reflection, and anticipation for the next year and summer recess. I'd like to specifically address the challenging "mid-year dip" that many students experience around this time of year, and share some research-based strategies that you can use to support your child at home.
Supporting Your Child Through Partnership with the School
We can help students by making sure families and schools work together. If these are not already in place, consider:
Maintaining or establishing communication with your child's teachers about their progress and challenges (Finding out and supporting what is going well can be a fantastic jumping-off point as we start with asset-focused conversations, rather than deficit-based)
Attending a school event with your child- yes, even with those Middle and High School age students.
Shameless Plug- Shrek the Musical is at SKHS from February 6th through the 9th and provides a great opportunity to experience and share in the many talents of our high school students!
Checking your child's homework and assignments regularly (Focus on if they understand and can explain what they are doing versus checking to see if they are just “getting it done”?)
Asking specific questions about what they're learning and any difficulties they're experiencing (What is it about Topic X you find confusing?)
Encouraging Positive Attitudes Through Gratitude
Research shows that practicing gratitude can significantly impact well-being and resilience. To help your child who may be experiencing “disillusionment” through a focus on gratitude:
Start a simple gratitude journal or share one daily "highlight" at dinner
Show them how to recognize and appreciate their own progress and achievements
Make time once a week to find ways to acknowledge teachers, friends, coaches, or others who have helped them
Acknowledge when effort is being given and celebrate small victories and improvements in their learning and habits
Supporting Healthy Habits and Well-being
Your child's emotional and physical well-being directly affects their learning, as well as what behaviors you see at home. Consider establishing or reinforcing:
Consistent sleep schedules, even on weekends
A quiet, dedicated space for homework
Taking regular breaks when working on projects or homework
Outdoor activities or exercise as a family
Limiting screen time and social media use
As we continue through February and the rest of this school year, remember that mid-year challenges can be temporary and can present opportunities to reestablish productive and healthy routines. If your child seems discouraged or overwhelmed, please reach out to their teachers or our school counselors. We have numerous resources available to support both you and your child. Additional resources for parents, suggested by the RI Dept of Education, are also provided at the conclusion of this month's update.
In closing, thank you for your continued commitment and investment in your child's education. Your partnership supporting your child's educational journey is invaluable, and the support you provide at home makes a tremendous difference in their successes here at South Kingstown Public Schools.
Sincerely,
Michael J. Podraza
Superintendent
