Second Step
About the Program
Second Step is a research-based social-emotional learning (SEL) program designed to improve students’ social-emotional skills, including growth mindset, goal-setting, emotion management, kindness and empathy, and problem-solving. The Weekly Update will include what students will be learning each week and how you can continue the conversations at home. Once we get started with interventions/enrichments during WIN Time later in September, our Second Step lessons will be taught on Wednesdays. For now, we will be implementing Second Step lessons more frequently start with one lesson this week and more next week.
An important note is that the Second Step program is split into two levels titled "Elementary" and "Middle School." The 5th grade curriculum is within the Elementary level of the program.
Please see the attachments below for more information about the program as a whole. You can also visit the website linked below for more family resources.
What are we learning this week?
5th Grade - Unit 1: Growth Mindset and Goal-Setting - Home Link
Lesson 1: The Right Goal for Me - In this week’s lesson, your child will learn how to set a goal that's right for them. A goal that's right for someone is specific, challenging, doable, and motivating.
Try this at home: Ask your child what their goal is and how they know it’s right for them. Encourage them to describe why it’s motivating to them. Talk to your child about a goal you reached in the past and why you chose that goal.
6th Grade - Unit 1: Mindsets and Goals
Lesson 1: Helping New Students - In this week’s lesson, your child will help brainstorm ways to support new students.
Try this at home: Tell your child about a time you helped someone new in any community you belong to. Ask your child how they wish someone would have helped them when they started middle school.
7th Grade - Unit 1: Mindsets and Goals
Lesson 1: Helping New Students - In this week’s lesson, your child will help brainstorm ways to support new students.
Try this at home: Ask your child what feelings they had when they started middle school. Did they get support from other students? Ask your child how they can support students who are new to their school.
8th Grade - Unit 1: Mindsets and Goals
Lesson 1: Welcome! - This week’s lesson will show your child how Second Step® Middle School can help them navigate physical, social, and emotional changes in adolescence.
Try this at home: Have a conversation with your child about what you felt was the most difficult part of being an adolescent. Ask your child about any changes they’ve noticed in friends and what they think about these changes.
Home Athletic Events
Please remember that students now get in free to any athletic events at Chippewa Hills! However, Middle school and elementary students must be accompanied by an adult. Additionally, students should not plan to stay after school for evening events as there is no supervision for them.

Mrs. Purdy - 5th Grade ELA Teacher
"My son left something important on the school bus. At the end of the day, Mrs. Purdy walked out to the bus & found the item. She didn’t have to do this, but she did. Mrs. Purdy has always made learning fun while running a structured classroom. She cares about her students; past & present. Thanks for all you do, Mrs. Purdy!"
