MARCH 20, 2024 - NEWSLETTER
SLPHS families,
Well, here we are in the third trimester, the home stretch of the school year. We look at this trimester with high expectations. Students now have a keen understanding of school routines and expectations. They are often most prepared during this trimester to have their best term of the school year.
We want to see all students end the year strong. I also know that spring weather, whenever it arrives, can be energizing and distracting. We will continue to push our students to remain academically focused through all spring brings. I appreciate your partnership in amplifying this message with your student.
To partner with parents and guardians, we will continue to communicate in a variety of ways during this trimester. Teachers will continue to send emails with class or project updates. Teachers will have office hours.
Teachers will also begin to use a tool called Talking Points to communicate directly with parents via SMS text about their student’s academic progress or attendance. Our attendance team and select teachers have been piloting this tool and we will now expand to all teachers. You don’t have to do anything to receive text messages. If you choose, you may download the app. If you use the app, you will no longer receive texts. Please see more information below.
Finally, I want to remind families that grades for the second trimester will be accessible in Campus Parent Portal on March 25. As we head into the final term of the school year, I want to thank you for your continued support and partnership.
One school, one community, #SLPPantherProud!
Matthew Boucher
Principal
Information about Talking Points, 2-Way Texting
A tool called Talking Points is used to text with parents and guardians. We have already begun using the tool specifically to follow up on student absences and attendance, and we are now expanding the use of this tool to teachers for classroom communication.
Talking Points supports real-time translation. Families can text in their native and/or preferred language and communicate with staff using their preferred language.
There is nothing parents and guardians need to do to receive messages as basic SMS text messages. If you choose to, you may download the Talking Points app. The app and website are not required to receive and send text messages with school staff. Please know that if you download the app, you will no longer receive SMS texts, but will receive messages through the app instead.
Our school staff look forward to the ways this form of communication can help support more real-time connections to support student learning and success. You can learn more about Talking Points on their website. If you have questions, contact communications@district16.org.
Upcoming Event: Positive Communication and Working Through Difficult Topics, April 10
If you haven't signed up already, make sure to RSVP for the Positive Communication and Working Through Difficult Topics event on Wednesday, April 10 at 6 p.m. in the Den at Westwood Intermediate and Middle School. Dealing with adversity is a normal part of life. In this session, learn skills and strategies around positively communicating with your child and working through difficult situations.
Access to curriculum and student learning experiences
Students use Seesaw (grades K-2) and Schoology (grades 3-12) for their learning. As we start a new trimester, parents/guardians are encouraged to access these platforms and follow along with what their children are learning in school. Once a parent or guardian logs on, if you're not sure what you're looking at or where to find something, ask your student to give you a tour.
Check out these instructions for logging on to our digital learning systems. You can find these instructions along with parent password guidance, and so many more tips and video tutorials about our technology tools on the Technology Tools, Resources and Log Ins page of our website under the "Parent" menu. All our Spring Lake Park Schools webpages also can be translated into multiple languages.

Message from the director: To follow up last year's wildly successful high school spring musical, "Matilda," we decided to push our costume and set design departments to their limits by doing a huge production - Disney's "Beauty and the Beast!" This will be a challenging play to pull off, but the joy of our incredible production team is their willingness to do whatever it takes to make sure that our students create magical productions for our audiences. We're looking forward to seeing a ton of little Belles in the audience (and hopefully some Beasts as well)!
Synopsis: The classic story tells of Belle, a woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, a prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. In a race against time, the Beast must learn how to open his heart to true love before he and his entire castle staff are doomed!
