October 23, 2024 - NEWSLETTER
Lighthouse families,
We hope everyone had a good fall break and had a chance to enjoy the beautiful weather. In the second half of our first trimester, students continue to learn about collaboration and embrace the role of being an empathetic designer through the design thinking unit. They are learning to put themselves in the shoes of the end user to identify their needs and desires in order to create meaningful solutions.
I hope you can join us for curriculum night on November 6 to get more insight on what student have been doing with design thinking and multidisciplinary units of study.
Beyond design thinking, collaboration is also evident in our interdisciplinary units of study. By weaving the competency of collaboration into both social learning and academic inquiry, we ensure that students grow as adaptable, empathetic, and cooperative learners ready to take on real-world challenges. Here are a few recent examples:
- Elementary students are collaborating by sharing their interpretations of how artists influence society. They are using diverse perspectives to build a deeper understanding of artistic impact.
- Intermediate students are working together to explore the inspiration drawn from everyday heroes. They have been discussing how personal experiences shape their view of heroism and inspire others.
- Middle and high school students have been engaging in group discussions to analyze the impact of a communal disease on a fictional community. They have been collaborating to consider how collective action and shared responsibility can shape the outcomes of crisis situations.
Collaboration can only happen when our students are here on time and ready to learn. Thank you for helping your student get to school each day ready to collaborate. Students being present at school, engaging with peers and facilitators is a critical part of their learning experience.
Please remember there is a Lighthouse PTO Meeting tonight, October 23 at 6:30 p.m. Join us at Lighthouse or virtually with this link.
Have a great week!
With gratitude,
Lisa Cisewski
Coordinator of Lighthouse School

Construction Program Continues to Build Community and Futures
The Construction Trades program at Spring Lake Park High School is in its third year, giving students hands-on experience through real-world construction projects This year, 40 students will complete their largest project yet: finishing a one-story, two-bedroom house that will become a permanent home for a local nonprofit.
Through partnerships with industry professionals, students gain experience working alongside plumbers, electricians, and other tradespeople to learn valuable construction skills. They have practiced by building smaller structures, like sheds and dog houses, and are now ready for the home’s finishing stages. The goal is to finish the house by December.
In addition to honing construction techniques, the students have built a sense of camaraderie. Recently, they gathered for a BBQ to celebrate their progress before diving into the final phase of the house project.
For students Trevor Kachina and Landon Ludke, the course is more than just learning construction - it is a stepping stone to their futures. The program is not just about building houses but also learning life skills, building community and shaping futures. Read more.
