A message from the nurse
Dear Parents,
Welcome to the 2017-18 school year. Health Services at your child’s school will be provided by an RN/LVN team shared between Leon Springs Elem and McAndrew Elem.
Health Services covers a spectrum of activities that strive to ensure the well-being of students and faculty. We review the medical history of each child and work with faculty and staff to ensure all student health needs are appropriately addressed. Please communicate with us if your child has Asthma, Food/Insect Sting Allergies or about any concerns that might arise.
This month we are working on Emergency Card Information and Immunization Records. In October we will we will be doing Vision and Hearing Screenings. We screen all students in K,1,3,& 5 and if new to NISD or in speech/spec ed in 2 &4. We rescreen ASAP students who fail the initial screen before we contact you. In addition we will conduct Acanthosis and occasional Pediculosis Screening (head checks for lice).
Our most visible role is in the school clinic where we provide first aid for school day injuries and assess students that are referred from class and communicate with parents about those observations. We must ask you to pick your child up from school or to keep your child home for temp of 100 or higher, vomiting, diarrhea, undiagnosed rash, untreated head lice or any illness or injury requiring medical attention. Children should be fever free for 24 hours without medication to prevent fever before returning to school.
Lastly, please discuss the purpose of the school clinic with your child; unnecessary and frequent clinic visits results in missed valuable class time. An adequate night of sleep with a regular bedtime, a healthy breakfast, and lots of love and encouragement will get your children off to a great start!
We are looking forward to a great year with your children! Please feel free to contact either of us if we can help in any way.
Thank you,
Samantha Wetz, RN LSE Mon/Tues/Fri, McA Wed/Thur
