The Hero Workshop Assembly
The Hero Workshop Assembly
By Ford Miller
Mrs. Kirchhoff 5th grade class
Each class got into their lines ready to enter the auditorium. There were lots of murmurs from students wondering what this assembly going to be about. “This looks cool,” I heard someone in the audience say. A man then walked up to the front of the stage and told us that today’s assembly was going to be a Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) story. There were a lot of claps from the audience wondering what would happen later in the assembly. He told us how D&D is a board game that’s filled with crazy, silly, and wacky stuff like dragons and beasts. He asked the room if anyone there had heard of D&D, and a lot of people raised their hands. However, when he asked if they had played D&D, a lot of those hands went down. If anything, though, that just made everyone more excited for the assembly, and with that we were ready to start our adventure.
We started the game with a dice roll by a volunteer named Eamonn in 4th grade. This wasn't a normal die, though, and instead it was a huge twenty-sided die that was about three and a half feet tall! The die was rolled across the floor, which was itself fun to watch. Kids wondered what it would land on. Finally it came to a stop at 4, which, as the presenters told us, they call “unFOURtunate.”
Two people then came on stage and sat down at a table to play D&D. As they chose what characters they wanted to be, more people came on stage to act out as those characters. Then we really knew what this assembly was going to be. It was D&D in real life!
The story started with a dragon who burst into the room and kidnapped a teacher; it was Ms. Suzan! The dragon ran out of the room and took Ms. Suzan with him. The characters knew they had to save Ms. Suzan… but how? There was a vote to decide how to save her. We all agreed we had to sneak into the dragon's lair. On the way, we met two more characters to help us on our journey. These were played by student volunteers from the audience. There was Oliver, from 5th grade, who played a knight, and Mateo from 3rd grade, who played a warlock. They even put on costumes to really complete the look!
We had a long adventure, and in the end, we made it to the lair. We saw Ms. Suzan in a cage. We battled the dragon with all our might and won. We saved Ms. Suzan. There was a lesson in this story of being a hero. The host said, “If anything bad or scary happens in your life, face it like a hero.” We are all heroes.
