READ TO FEED
We are kicking off a school-wide project which will start on Monday. We will be having a READ-A-THON to promote reading and to support Heifer International. If you are not familiar with this organization, through donations they provide farm animals to families in developing nations. These animals make a profound difference in the lives of whole families. They provide the families with a means to financial security. They can provide food, resources for bartering and money to send children to school. (Not every nation provides a free public education!)
Here's how it will work. Each class is asked to spend 10 minutes per day in silent reading; each child fully engaged in reading for 10 minutes. We are looking for folks to sponsor our readers with financial gifts. It could be that you will donate a flat amount of money to the program (an envelope will be coming home), or that you offer to give a specific amount of money for each minute or each day that we complete the 10 minutes. We have a school-wide goal of raising $5,000. This amount will provide two water buffalos, two cows, two sheep and two goats, along with bees, chicks, rabbits and more. This will help a whole community in a developing nation!
If you are in a position to give, we'd love to have your support. If you are not in a financial position to give, you can still offer encouragement to your child in their participating and helping our class achieve the goal.
Below is a video that explains the BIG impact that this program can have in the life of a child and a family. You will meet the speaker as a 9 year old whose family received a goat and see how it helped shape the future of her family over time! (It's only about 6 minutes long.)

4th grade readers
On Wednesday we were visited by 2 boys from 4th grade who did a very expressive reading of Elephant and Piggie, Elephants Can Not Dance. It was entertaining!
Kicking off READ TO FEED
We'd love to have you support our school-wide project to help a community on the other side of the world!
Walk to School Day
Our next Walk to School Day is scheduled for Thursday, March 1st. Wear your blue JCMES shirt and comfy shoes!
President's Day
In honor of this week's holiday, students wrote about what they would do if they were the president of the United States. Their responses were great! Several students were interested in throwing a pool party (perhaps the warm weather inspired them!), but several others wrote about requiring people to be kind.
