Newsletter - June 20, 2025
"Building a community prepared for the choices and challenges of life."
Message from the Principal
Dear Lamoille Union Students, Families, and Caregivers,
Yesterday, we wrapped up a remarkable year - one defined by connection, growth, and pride in our school community. Our students made it special in countless ways.
Last Friday, our Closing Ceremony celebrated those contributions. We honored student achievement, recognized state championships, acknowledged those departing, and announced faculty and staff years of service awards. We also celebrated our Teachers and Staff of the Year - congratulations to Kathleen Cummings, Greg Davis, and Meranda Morin on their well-deserved recognition. Thank you to the many students, staff, parents, and caregivers who submitted nominations and helped lift up the incredible people who make Lamoille the community it is.
On June 14th, we gathered for a beautiful graduation ceremony honoring our seniors. The outpouring of positive feedback and gratitude has been deeply appreciated, and it speaks to the power and meaning of that milestone for our graduates, their families, and our school.
While summer is a time to recharge, some important work continues. We are offering summer recovery opportunities for students and preparing for the upcoming year through professional development with some of our teachers. This includes participation in programs like the Advanced Placement (AP) Summer Institute.
As shared in our last newsletter, we will be strengthening our cell phone expectations starting this fall. Students will be expected to keep phones put away during the entire school day - from bell to bell. This change supports our goal of fostering a more focused and connected learning environment and aligns with recent legislative efforts across Vermont aimed at limiting distractions and promoting student well-being in schools.
Thank you again for your continued partnership. Wishing each of you a safe, restful, and joyful summer.
-Bethann Pirie, LUHS Principal

LUHS Summer Program
We are excited to share our 2025 summer school registration packet with you. The LUHS summer program allows students an additional opportunity for academic recovery. Students can continue working on course expectations allowing them to stay on track for graduation. If you feel the summer program would benefit your student, please fill out the paperwork within the packet and return it to LUHS or have your student bring it with them on the first day of the program. If you would like to email the packet to the school, please attach the completed packet and email it to Christine Cooney, ccooney@lnsd.org. The LUHS school counselors will be mailing hard copies to students that are being referred to the program based on current and past grades. If you have any questions, please reach out to Greg Davis, gdavis@lnsd.org, Summer Program Director.
Mathematics and Literacy Intervention at LUHS
Beginning with the 2025–2026 school year, students recommended for Math or Literacy Intervention will be eligible to earn 0.5 Math or English graduation credit for successful completion of a quarter to a semester of work.
Math and Literacy Intervention sessions are designed to support students in all grades by building confidence, strengthening skills, and deepening connections to core math and literacy concepts. These sessions take place during a scheduled study hall and are offered in addition to students' core English and Math classes.
Sally Hile (Math Interventionist) and Cathy Frankfurter (Literacy Interventionist) have worked thoughtfully to identify and schedule students for the upcoming year. Intervention rosters and recommendations will continue to be updated throughout the year. Families will be notified prior to any student beginning a new intervention session.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Sally Hile (Math), Cathy Frankfurter (English), or your student’s school counselor.
A Letter From Our Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment
Dear LNSU Families,
Thank you for the opportunity to work with your children this year—it is truly a privilege to be part of their learning journey!
As we look ahead to next school year, we will be updating and refining our Educational Support Team (EST) systems. ESTs are collaborative teams of educators who come together to provide additional support for students who may need more help than what is typically provided in the general education classroom.
It’s important to note that ESTs are distinct from 504 Plans and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), which follow a separate process.
This fall, we will be reevaluating which students may benefit from the additional support of an EST. Students with discontinued EST plans will have the opportunity to be considered for new plans through the updated MTSS process in the 2025–26 school year. (Please note that students who receive related services such as Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, or Speech-Language services will not be affected by this review.)
If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s needs, we encourage you to reach out to your child’s teacher or school counselor.
Wishing you and your family a safe and joyful summer!
Warm regards,
Kimberly Hunt
