VPHS Academic Competition Class - Fall 2024
Students participate in three activities*:
Mock Trial- Fall
Academic Decathlon - Winter
Model United Nations - Spring
Mock Trial
Students prepare arguments for a given case as either the prosecution or defense. They present their arguments in a mock trial, portraying attorneys, witnesses, and supporting roles. Real judges and attorneys provide feedback and scores.
Model United Nations
Students role-play as delegates of different countries, researching their stances on worldwide issues. Through debate and negotiation, students will tackle problems in a diplomatic matter.
*Not all students will have to compete in all three, but the class will prepare students in all areas.
Academic Decathlon
Students study 7 disciplines related to a topic: Art, Economics, Literature, Math, Music, Science, and Social Science.
Students will develop proficiency in 3 skills: Speech, essay composition, and interview.
On competition day, students will present the culmination of their efforts in various formats, being scored individually and as a team against other schools.

Teacher Appreciation Week
In celebration of teacher appreciation week, VPHS ASB and PFSO provided breakfasts for our educators throughout the week. On Wednesday, bagels from 5th Avenue Bagelry and coffee from Starbucks and Seven Leaves were distributed in the Teacher’s Lounge. Thanks to donations from local businesses, this accomplishment was done without paying a single dollar.
On Friday, VPHS PFSO held a breakfast for teachers in the breezeway. Burritos, fruit, and beverages were offered. VPHS PFSO also held a teacher raffle, with the winners being awarded various gift cards and flower arrangements.
We would also like to give a second thanks to our donors:
* Starbucks
* 5th Ave Bagelry
* Seven Leaves
Dodgeball Recap
Written by: Alex Tran
Throughout this week, 13 teams consisting of over 156 players participated in the annual dodgeball tournament. Many of these teams, which included students from a variety of extracurricular and athletic backgrounds faced off against each other. Some even played against teachers, who had their own exclusive team. As the rounds progressed, the number of participating teams decreased – with the final game being Friday. Between the “B-Ballers” and the “Chompers”, the former won in a tight round. All students played well and attracted many of their fellow students to watch them in the gym.
VPHS March 'N Spartan at the Orange May Parade
George Beyer Memorial Concert
Villa Park Jazz bands were able to host and perform for parents and community members this past Wednesday. We recently lost and important member of our Villa Park, jazz, and educator family, George Beyer. He had a long career of directing bands at Loara High School, community colleges, and private students from VP.
After performing, our students were able to listen to a community-led professional group created by George called "Sons of Thunder."
VP junior trumpet player, Jacky Markle, performed with the band!
We are so fortunate to have such devoted members of our Villa Park community. We will always remember George and his kind charity to his fellow educators and students.

Spartan Profiles
Sarah Gonzalez-Speech Language Pathologist
Written by: Alexander Tran
Graduating from El Toro High School, Mrs. Gonzalez was active in the school’s athletics and volunteering opportunities. Upon graduation, she would go on to attend Orange Coast Community College, soon transferring to her undergraduate and graduate schools where Mrs. Gonzalez would major in Communicative Disorders. Prior to joining our Spartan family in August of 2021, Mrs. Gonzalez worked at Irvine High School and for the County of Los Angeles. As a Speech Language Pathologist, Mrs. Gonzalez’s favorite memory here at Villa Park High School would have to be coordinating a gift for the principal. Some fun facts about Mrs. Gonzalez is that she has met many famous people, including Ben Affleck, Quentin Tarantino, and Billie Jean King. During her free time, Mrs. Gonzalez enjoys surfing and traveling. (Pictured on right below)
Evelyn Chairez-School Psychologist
Written by: Alexander Tran
Graduating from Silverado High School in Victorville, Mrs. Chairez would go on to attend the University of California, Riverside and National University in San Diego. As a psychology major, Mrs. Chairez was very involved in her studies – soon becoming a substitute psychologist in San Diego County, a vocation she held before coming to VPHS in September, 2021. As a faculty member here at VPHS, Mrs. Chairez’s favorite experience so far would have to be the Mario Kart Staff Tournament. Some fun facts about Mrs. Chairez is that she grew up in San Diego near the border; is a big fan of the “Lord of the Rings”; and enjoys playing video games such as Final Fantasy and Assassins Creed. Mrs. Chairez also has a very close relationship with Mrs. Gonzalez, both of whom attend concerts and sporting events together. (pictured on left above)
