Principal's Message:
Kia ora e te whaanau,
The last couple of weeks have been a great start to the school year with swimming sports and tabloid sports for our older students going ahead. The students practiced their house chants to build house spirit which we heard across the school on the day. Well done to all those who participated.
Our first assembly this year had a focus on student leadership. All students at OAS can show leadership through their actions every day, and there are many pathways for students to become involved in the school and show leadership. Badges were given out to our senior leaders and to our year 6 house leaders, with the year 8’s still to be done. This year our senior house leaders will work closely with their junior counterparts to organise termly house events. This term’s house event is a quiz which will be held on the last day of term.
At this assembly we also introduced the new house flags, each fortnight the current winning house flag is flown on the flagpole, well done to Hillary, the current lead house.
Assemblies are held fortnightly in our school hall on Monday at 2:30pm. Parents and community are welcome to attend. The next assembly is on 6th March.
The school has done well in 2022 NCEA results, placing our students above the national averages. 75.6% of students enrolled throughout the year for Level 1 achieved, 87.8% of Level 2, and 72.7% of Level 3, Almost half of our Level 1 and 3 students achieved with merit or excellence endorsement. One student gained an outstanding achievement in their scholarship exam for biology. NCEA endorsement certificates will be handed out at assembly this term.
Our Kapa Haka students performed at the Vintage Cars Day as a fundraiser for them. They looked fantastic in their new uniform shirts. These students demonstrated our school values and represented our school with pride.
Have a great weekend
Ngaa mihi,
Rebecca Bills

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS 2023
Kia ora whaanau!
Onewhero Area School is getting ready to once again welcome short term International Student Groups to our school after three years of Covid.
This is an exciting opportunity for our students as well as for the whole community to learn about different cultures, games, food etc through connection and friendships. We host groups from 6 to 30 students at a time, from four days to 6 weeks.
For these exchanges to go ahead, we need host families that are wanting to open their hearts and homes to these students and show them our kiwi way of life. Homestay families will be compensated for their costs and effort ($280 per student per week or $40 per night). We try to host students 2 per family, but sometimes there might also be single placements.
If you are keen to host, you need to be able to offer them a room with a bed, desk etc and provide meals and transport to and from school. (School busses may be an option) You need to treat them as part of your family.
Interested families will need to be police vetted under the vulnerable children's act, and approved by the school. By hosting these students, you will be part of our homestay families group and be invited to cultural parties etc. It is a great way to connect with likeminded families and a fantastic way for your children to learn about other cultures. Most International students love interacting with young children and playing games with them.
Full support will be given from our International Student coordinator.
We are keen to hear from families, couples and singles who may be keen to be part of this!
