Highlighted Scholarships of the Week
MAC Scholar Athlete Scholarship for Sophomores! Due March 18th
The MAC Scholar Athlete Program is a scholarship which is provided to one Tualatin High Sophomore each year. It includes a $1500 college scholarship and a two year membership to the Multnomah Athletic Club.
Criteria
- Applicants must not be a current MAC member
- Applicants must be a sophomore enrolled at Tualatin High School
- Applicants must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher
- Applicants must have participated in competitive high school athletics
- Applicants must exhibit strong character and leadership involvement in their school and community

Byrom Elementary - Due April 4th & Humanists of Portland Due 3/30
This $2,500 scholarship is for students who attended Byrom Elementary at least 1 year. The essay includes describing how you embody the Three B values of being safe, respectful, and responsible. Application is on Naviance.
Humanists of Greater Portland $3,000
This organization offers essays to students living in Clackamas, Clark, Multnomah and Washington counties.Students write 2 essays.

The College and Career Center will be hosting the Lunch-time College Info Sessions on Wednesdays after Spring Break. These sessions are for all grades, parents are welcome to attend too. Topics include: Prepping for College, Researching colleges & Navigating applications, Financing College, Essays. More information coming soon!

3/10 Jiffy Lube Teen Driver Scholarship Program $4,500
500 word essay on "What drives you?". Describe your interest, career paths and dreams.
3/11 Oregon Alliance of Black School Educators
For Oregon students who identify as Black, African-american or African descent or African Diaspora.
3/13 Blacks at Microsoft Scholarship (BAM) $20,000
For African-American students who plan to pursue a STEM or business-related degree, have a passion for technology, and plan to attend a 4 year college.
3/13 Women at Microsoft Scholarship $5,000
Female planning to study STEM field, demonstrated passion for technology.
3/13 Microsoft Disability Scholarship $20,000
Students with disabilities, plan to study technology and attend a 2 or 4 year college and demonstrate leadership.
3/15 Atsuhiko Tateuchi Memorial Scholarship $5,000 (renewable)
The scholarship is thru WashBoard website and is available for Oregon students. Preference will be given to students of Japanese or other Asian ancestry, including multi-ethnic Asians.
3/15 Horatio Alger Career and Technical Scholarship
Strong financial need, plan to obtain a Bachelor's degree, be involved in school activities, and overcome adversity. Several scholarships listed under this website.
3/15 Shell Scholarship Engineering or Geoscience $2,500
Scholarships for students who have expressed an interest in the engineering or geoscience industry and demonstrated an aptitude in mathematics and science.
3/15 Oregon Athletic Coaches Association Scholarship $1,000
10 Scholarships given to sons and daughters of OACA. Completed scholarship applications, including a copy of the student's transcript and two letters of recommendation.
3/15 LaVelle Mullennex Memorial Scholarship $1,000
Students interested in the legal field as legal support staff (such as a legal secretary, legal assistant, paralegal, law office administrative staff, court reporter, court personnel), or other positions traditionally associated with providing services and office support to attorneys.
3/16 Oregon Association of Secondary School Administrators Youth Scholarship $1,000
The Oregon Association of Secondary School Administrators (OASSA) awards two $1000 scholarships each year to graduating seniors from Oregon public high schools. The scholarships may be used for a 2- or 4-year college or university, trade or professional/technical school. These two scholarships are for a son, daughter or dependent child of an OASSA member.
3/18 OCA-UPS Gold Mountain Scholarship $2,000
Identify as Asian American, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, First Generation college students
3/18 SubPop's Loser Scholarship $6,000
Scholarship for students of Washington or Oregon who are interested in music and/or creative arts. You do not need to be pursuing an education in the arts.
3/29 Doug Lemley Memorial Scholarship $1,000
Pursuing an area of study that would relate to a job in facility management, maintenance, support operations, engineering, or technology.
3/29 Promising Futures Scholarship Program 3,000
For majors compatible with school business finance professions. The scholarship is open to public high school seniors who have been accepted and college freshman enrolled full time at an accredited Oregon community college, college or university.
3/30 Humanists of Greater Portland $3,000
Multiple scholarships for students of Clackamas, Clark, Multnomah and Washington counties. Application includes two essays on core values of humanism. Application is on Naviance

Some Questions to Ask During an Information Session or Tour:
- Is there any advantage to applying Early Decision/Early Action?
- Are there particular courses that you want to see on a high school transcript?
- How are standardized tests factored into admissions decisions?
- How important is GPA or class rank in admissions decisions?
- How important are extracurricular activities? Are there certain activities that you like to see more than others?
- How do you look at students who have part-time jobs?
- Do you consider whether a student is applying for financial aid when you make your admissions decisions?
- How many admissions officers read each application? How often do you make admissions decisions by committee?
- In your opinion, what makes a good college essay?
- What are some common mistakes that you see students make on their applications?
- Do you have any samples of applications or essays that you really liked?

Distinguished Young Women Scholarship Program - HS Juniors
Due March 20th
With a mission to positively impact the lives of young women, Distinguished Young Women provides scholarships and life-enhancing experiences at the local, state and national levels. Along with cash scholarships, Distinguished Young Women participants are eligible for college-granted scholarships from colleges and universities across the country.
Distinguished Young Women is a program specifically for girls who are high school juniors. The program promotes self-confidence, interviewing and public speaking skills, academic excellence, fitness, and the ability to think and communicate clearly. Participants are judged in the following areas:
- Scholastics (25% of overall score) Participants are evaluated on their grades, course load, test scores, and overall academic success.
- Interview (25% of overall score) Judges evaluate a participant’s mental alertness, perception, clarity of expression, accomplishments, personality, and sense of values.
- Talent (20% of overall score) Participants perform a 90 second talent that can be anything from musical performances to scientific demonstrations. Judges look for technical ability, stage presence, and execution.
- Fitness (15% of overall score) Participants are judged on their overall physical stamina, coordination, agility, and flexibility during a choreographed aerobic routine.
- Self-Expression (15% of overall score) Judges evaluate a participant’s grace, poise, demeanor, carriage, and speaking ability in front of an audience.

College Events
PCC Preview Day - Field Trip!
Portland Community College will be hosting Preview Day events for high school students to participate in a brief introduction to our programs and services. During Preview Day, you will:
- Get valuable information on how to prepare to attend PCC
- Hear about programs, degrees, and certificates
- Spend time interacting with PCC faculty and staff
- Learn about financial aid and other scholarship opportunities
On April 25th TuHS students can join the field trip to the PCC Preview day on the Cascade Campus. Come by the College and Career Center to pick up a permission slip. Space is limited and the first student to turn in their signed permission slips are the first in line to get on the bus.

There are many steps students can take now to prep for their plan after graduation. The College and Career Center has created "to do lists" for students from Freshman year to Senior year. Check it out!

Jobs: jobs or work if you are under 16
Many companies will slow down their hiring process after the holiday rush. If you're needing work, or under the age of 16, try tapping into your neighborhood. Some ideas include:
- Providing services to watch houses, dogs, take in mail while families are out of town. Some have last minute needs!
- Providing services to take down holiday decorations.
- Providing babysitting services - many parents want some time off to shop or enjoy the holiday.
How to spread the word? You'll need to market yourself. Here are some ideas:
- Create a flyer to pass around to neighbors (neighboring apartments or houses). Find an example HERE
- Create an account on Nextdoor.com - (you may need parent permission) Post a jpeg copy of your flyer and/or resume with a brief description of yourself.
- Create a LinkedIn teen account - very professional! you can link this account to your resume or on your Nextdoor post.
