Walking Together in the Word

These devotional materials guide you through the Bible readings for the June 20, 2021 Sunday worship service. We pray they are a blessing to you and your family!

Why study God's Word and pray together?

• Bible study and prayer strengthens faith and brings you closer to God and to one another.
• Study of readings and hymns for the weekend prepares you for worship.
• The way parents express and model their faith helps shape young people’s faith lives.
• God's Word gives life!---new life now and eternal life with Jesus in heaven. (John 20:31)

Several of the disciples were seasoned fishermen. Their fear shows that this was no ordinary storm.

• What does it say about the disciples that, in their fear, they turned Jesus?

After Jesus saved them, Mark says that a new fear struck the disciples.

• Why did the Lord’s dramatic act in saving them make them so fearful?

Read Mark 4:35-41.

Think about a time you were afraid. Who did you go to for help? God gives people to comfort us when we are afraid. Jesus asked His disciples, “Why are so you afraid?” He wanted them to know they didn’t need to fear. He was with them and He would help them. He promises to be with us and help us too!

Meditate on this section of Scripture, using these prompts:

• What does this passage teach you about God, His love for you, and His will for your life?

Our help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. Psalm 124:8

Throughout the week, write prayers of praise, thanksgiving, and requests in a prayer journal or on a sheet of paper. Take turns praying when you gather for devotions.

• God asks Job a lot of questions, and Job has no answers. Why not?

• What does God want Job to learn, think, or do differently as a result of this encounter?

Read Job 38:1-11.

Who formed the earth? Who made the stars? Who created the seas? God did! Job was hurting. Job had lots of questions. God reminded Job to trust in Him, because He is all-powerful, He is in control. What hurts and questions do you have? Take them to God in prayer. He will listen and help you.

• Write down the spiritual qualities that sustained Paul during his ministry.

• How might these qualities sustain us as we face hardships and challenges?

Read 2 Corinthians 6:1-13.

Life was not easy for Paul as He shared the Gospel. But that didn’t stop Him from talking about Jesus! What makes it hard for us to talk about Jesus? When we feel discouraged, God’s love and grace encourages us!

This psalm celebrates the deliverance that God brings to His people.

• Note what the psalmist says would have happened if the Lord had not “been on our side.”

• What is the correct and blessed reaction of God’s people to God’s grace and deliverance? (see verses 6, 8)

Read Psalm 124.

When you are playing a game, doing something important, or protecting yourself, who do you want on your side? Someone smart, someone strong, someone who cares about you, right?

The writer of Psalm 124 knew that if God had not been on His people's side, they would have been lost. We need God on our side too. Guess what? He is! God loves you, protects you, and guides you.

• Psalm 124:8 is our memory verse for this week. Make up actions and memorize this verse!

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

I thank you my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.

I thank you my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ Your dear Son, that you have graciously kept me this day; and I pray that You would forgive me all my sins where I have done wrong, and graciously keep me this night.
