MCA Testing at SHMS begins this week!
MCA/MTAS: 6th - 8th grade (MCA Science is 8th grade only)
- MCA Reading - April 3-4
- MCA Math - April 17-18
- MCA Science (8th grade only) – May 1-2
Why are the MCA exams so important?
That is a very legitimate question to ask. I hope the following letter explains the importance of the exams and why we are hoping our ISD196 Students will take the assessments seriously.
So why do our students take the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment or MCA?
The Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards are the statewide expectations for student learning in K-12 public schools. School districts are required to put state standards into place so all students have access to high-quality content and instruction. The MCA exam (along with the MAP test) is used to help guide teachers and differentiate their lessons.
There are 4 strands in the Minnesota middle school standards called Number & Operation, Algebra, Geometry & Measurement, and Data Analysis & Probability. Each standard has benchmarks that teachers try to reach in terms of what they teach each year in math. Follow these links to see the standards as written by the Minnesota Department of Education: Grade 6 Grade 7 Grade 8
Why are the MCA Exams so important to our students, parents, and teachers?
1. MCA exams are important measures to assess our students’ academic knowledge and proficiency and are compatible with information from previous grades so teachers can see patterns of growth.
2. The results provide a snapshot of student learning success. Assessments are an integral part of instruction, as it determines whether or not the goals of education are being met. Assessment affects decisions about grades, placement, advancement, instructional needs, curriculum, and, in some cases, funding. Assessments inspire us to ask these hard questions: "Are we teaching what we think we are teaching?" "Are students learning what they are supposed to be learning?" "Is there a way to teach the subject better, thereby promoting better learning?"
3. The assessment measures how our curriculum aligns with the Minnesota Academic Standards and our own District 196 standards. It provides data to be used by our teachers for strengthening instructional approaches.
4. The MCA is a standardized exam that utilizes an array of different assessment methods (or different types of question formats like multiple choice, drag & drop, short answer, etc.) which provide multiple opportunities for students to demonstrate their understanding and knowledge. This is great practice as our students move into the high schools and prepare to take the MCA Math Exam and the ACT exam during their junior year. Our 33 Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MinnState.edu) use high school MCA results for course placement. If students receive a college-ready score, they may not need to pay for and take a remedial, noncredit course for that subject area.
5. The MCA exam is a great way for students (and their parents) to see the culmination of their hard work over the past 7-9 years.
We challenge our students across the district to take the MCA exam seriously. Why not take the opportunity to see where your strengths lie? Those strengths may help guide you as you graduate from middle school, move on to high school, and eventually graduate to move on to earning a college degree or moving into the workforce.

RHS would like to offer our middle school athletes (7th/8th graders) an opportunity to continue their physical development through a spring Champions Club program. The program will take 60 participants. The spring offering will be different than the winter program because we will NOT be doing the speed development part and encouraging athletes to participate in the middle school track program.
Each participant will agree to the following:
• Athletes will report to Rosemount High School for a strength development work out after the middle school track practice ends usually between 4:45-5pm. Athletes will report to the weight room doors (Door 22).
• Complete workouts with integrity.
• Listen to the direction provided by Champions Club staff.
• Not wear headphones in the weight room.
• Refrain from any kind of horseplay or negative comments towards others when in the weight room or dome.
• Not be in the RHS locker rooms. If they need to change, they will use the restrooms near door 22.
Failure to fulfill these expectations may result in removal from the program with no refund.
Registration is handled by MyPaymentsPlus on the RHS homepage (look for 23-24 Winter Irish Gym – 7th/8th graders ) and is limited to the first 60! Cost is $45.

Mental Health Minute from ACP
Executive Functioning
"Why can't you just stop and think?" How many times have we heard that phrase? The prefrontal cortex (which isn't fully developed until the age of 25!) of your brain is where executive functioning begins. Executive functioning is the cognitive skills that allow a person to make decisions, plan, multitask, focus, use self-control, and remember instructions. People are not born with these skills; they develop with time through practice and modeling (and again, aren't fully developed until their mid-twenties!). When people have difficulty with executive functioning, it can impact their life at home, school, and leisure activities. It is also important to know that deficits in executive functioning can be correlated with symptoms of ADHD.

Growing Through Grief
If you have a student who is dealing with the loss of an immediate family member (sibling, parent, grandparent, caregiver) or individual who significantly influenced your student and feel they would benefit from participating in Park Nicollet's Growing Through Grief group, we would like to offer your student this grief group opportunity.
Scott Highlands Middle School will be hosting this group again; this year it will be facilitated by Jenny Simmonds, a licensed grief therapist through Park Nicollet. Group sessions will be held during the school day and will run throughout the school year. Our hope is that this group would begin sometime in October. If you are interested in having your student participate, please email your student's school counselor with the name of your student and they will contact you to provide further information.
Every Meal
Healthy eating is so important for students. At Scott Highlands Middle School, we work hard to ensure students receive a free healthy breakfast and lunch each day to support their developing brains and bodies. Research shows that students who eat regular, nutritious meals are more likely to attend school and engage in learning.
We are excited to partner with Every Meal again this year and offer a free weekend food program to all our students. You do not need to qualify or meet criteria to qualify for this free weekend food. You simply need to have students at home who would benefit from extra food.
Free for all families
No qualifications required for enrollment
Students enrolled in the program will receive a 4-5 pound bag of nutritious, nonperishable food each week
Every Meal does not collect information from families; privacy is protected
Families may enroll in the program anytime throughout the school year
Families may choose from a variety of different weekend meal bag options
Please complete the enrollment form using the link below and you will receive your free weekend food. The first delivery will be Friday, September 29th
