Thank you to all families who supported us last night by allowing your children to attend open night and be guides, classroom helpers and sausage sizzle cookers. We had a great turnout of families touring NSC and asking lots of questions. The feedback we received about our students, staff and facilities was overwhelmingly positive.

It was great to have four schools visit NSC on Tuesday for our 7 Aside tournament. Although past years events have put a bit of a dampener on proceedings, this year we are back and celebrated being able to interact with and compete against other schools. The weather certainly played its part. Thank you to our Sports Coordinator Mrs Elder for organising the day.

As we are approaching the end of our winter sports season I would like to thank our staff, parents, students and friends of NSC that have stepped up this year to coach, manage and provide transport for our students. They have so many wonderful opportunities to represent NSC and this could not happen without you.

Best of luck to our students and staff attending Winter Sports Tournament Week. Our senior netball team (with Miss Stark and Mrs Cullen), under 15 rugby payers and Adam Bayer (basketball) are all representing NSC the week after next. Our boys football team also have a game against Cromwell College in tournament week. The clay target shooting team have their national competition at the end of this term.

Finally, a reminder that Monday 22 August is the second of four 2022 Ministry of Education directed NCEA Accord Teacher Only Days. All Teacher Only Days (and other trips, camps and events) are visible on our school calendar that can be seen via our NSC School App. We also share this information on our school Facebook page and have given a notice to our students.

Congratulations to all of the finalists who spoke so well at yesterday's NSC Year 7/8 Speech Final. The three students going through to the next round (on Tuesday the 23rd September at 9.30 am in the NSC Library) are: Eli Chabon, Megui Panaligan & Tess Kutsyk.

Gordon Bradley and Seneli Wathukarage are the reserves. Thank you to our judges: Mrs Coghlan, Mr Wilkinson, Mrs Rodgers and Mrs Pannett.

Weatherboard classroom for removal from Northern Southland College, 51 Maria St, Lumsden. Chattels include - heat pump, blinds, light fittings, fixed floor coverings and wall linings. The purchaser will be responsible for costs associated with removing the building and ensuring the area is left in a neat and tidy condition. Building must be removed by 14 October.

Just a reminder that we are required by the Ministry to have received signed permission by a parent/caregiver for any student to participate in a school sport or activity. In most cases you should receive the form as a hard copy and email. Please remember to return these to school with your child. Without a copy of the signed permission form they will not be able to participate in the sport /activity.

All schools received MOE notification at the end of the school holidays for schools to make their own decision regarding mask wearing mandates. We have considered this and at this stage our rules are unchanged (see below)

NSC Health and Safety Covid mask wearing requirements:

· Highly recommended for staff/students to wear masks at school and on school trips but not compulsory (remains compulsory on school buses and if required on a school trip – eg. Visiting a business)

· Visitors to wear a mask indoors (unless exempt)

· Contractors/outside providers (eg. Plumber / University Liaison Staff) to wear a mask when indoors

· No mask wearing required outdoors

· If/when in presence of highly immunocompromised staff member/student we may need to provide masks to those present

· We will visit these requirements if conditions change (eg. exponential growth in Covid cases/illness at NSC, MOE/Government mandates reinstated)

Seniors - you can get credits for your Driver's Licence. The Learner Licence is worth 2 credits at Level 1, the Restricted is 4 credits at Level 2, and the Full Licence is 2 credits at Level 2. Take a photo of your licence and email it to jordana.norrish@nsc.school.nz and they will be put onto Kamar for you.

CSC 1st XV / Saturday. 20-15 win against Verdon College

CSC U16 / Saturday. 10-24 loss to Southland Boys

The boys played Auroroa College for the top spot in the B Division of the Southland College Football League on Wednesday. Despite fielding a "make-shift" team, as majority of the boys in the team were away sick, the team gave their best but unfortunately had to come out the second best in the game.

Overall, the season is over for the Boys' Football team and the team management would like to thank everyone for their support of the team, especially the parents who had to drive the boys to and from the away games, and not forgetting the hardworking Manager of the team, Mrs. R.

KA PAI team

Over the weekend students from NSC were shooting at the Balfour Gun Club intercollege shoot. With the sun out and no wind it was a great day for shooting. Once again, our students competed well with some really good results for all the students in the team. They have shoots in Alexandria and Wanaka later in the term and are preparing for the South Island and Nationals in Christchurch at the end of the term.

August 10: Junior Basketball final - NSC Stars v Longford Raptors

Congratulations to the NSC Stars on a great season. Though the final ended in a loss by a single point, all the players have grown in their teamwork, strategy and skill thanks to Coach Adam Bayer who was awarded the ESBA Most Improved C Grade Boy trophy.

Special thanks to Gwen Gullick for managing the team as well as all the drivers kind enough to drive the boys to and from Gore.

Congratulations to our Senior A team who got 2nd in the Monday Night Mixed Grade Comp. They had a good game against Verdon.

We wish our 7/8 6 A-Side teams all the very best on Sunday for their finals in Gore. Maroon Team will be playing off for 1st (1pm) and Yellow are playing off for 3rd (12pm) in the Southland Wide Division 4 Comp at 1pm.

What a fantastic day!!

So good to see students coming together from other country schools to compete and enjoy a great day socialising and connecting with each other.

A huge THANK YOU to all staff and parents who helped bring this day together… The day could not have happened without those of you putting your hand up to coach, manage, ref and help with food.

A special thanks also needs to go to the team of student helpers… Such a super reliable wee team you were. You all did yourselves and your school very proud.

NSC entered 3 teams in the Southland Primary Schools’ Festival of Netball on Wednesday. A great time was had by all.

Get2Go Challenge:

• Queenstown Friday 16 September. This is a great entry level adventure challenge for Year 9 and Year 10 school students. The Torpedo7 Get2Go Series combines fun, outdoor adventure activities like orienteering, kayaking, stand-up paddling, mountain biking and a little bit of problem solving, into an action-packed day suitable for students of all fitness levels and experience. This is a great opportunity for all Yr 9 and 10 students up for the challenge. Please see Mrs Elder on Monday if you are interested in being part of the team

Please also make sure you have joined up with the alert sport groups specific to your child/ren to receive relevant notifications.

A further reminder that the Ministry of Education will help families that have little or no internet connectivity at home. Please contact the Office so that we can help before any distance teaching and learning occurs.

Student Allowance

Not every student qualifies for a Student Allowance so it is important for students to think about

how they will afford to live, especially if they plan to go flatting or move into a hall of residence.

The good news is, for those who qualify, Student Allowance does not need to be paid back.

Students can also earn up to $240.70 a week before tax before any allowance payments are

affected.

Student Allowance is based on parental income until age 24, even if the student does not live at home. This calculator will help first-time students determine how much Student Allowance they may get:

Like with Student Loan, students must pass more than half of their EFTS to remain eligible, there is a limit of 200 weeks study (about 5 years). Student Allowance does not get paid over the summer holiday so students will need to either get a job during this period or apply for Jobseeker Support Student Hardship while they are looking for a job.

When to apply

The best time to apply is before 16 December, to make sure everything is sorted when study

starts in 2023. Most people start applying in term 3 and term 4.

There is no need to wait until NCEA results come out in January. Students can even apply if they haven't decided where they want to study yet, or they’re waiting on confirmation of their course. Applications can be updated or withdrawn after submission.
