News and Notes
We had a great first full week of school! We are learning routines and procedures, beginning our curricular learning, and building community. We are getting to know one another and the learning goals of our grade levels. Also, 5th graders learned about beginning band and 4th graders learned about beginning orchestra. See above for upcoming meetings for sign-up!
We can't wait to welcome all families to join us for Open House on Tuesday, August 27th, from 7:00-8:30 pm. We will review the ways we are growing our team, curricular expectations for each grade level, and general information about the year.
There will be two sessions of Open House to accommodate families. Our schedule is as follows:
- Session one: 7:00-7:45 pm
- Session two: 7:45-8:30 pm
- Each session:
- 10 minute presentation in the gym with Principal Humm and Assistant Principal Small
- 5 minute transition
- 30 minutes in the classroom for teacher presentations
Please understand that teachers will be unable to address student-specific conversations during this time. If you have questions particular to your child, please reach out to your classroom teacher by email or phone. We're looking forward to meeting and welcoming families!

Attendance is Important!
Although the flyer below focuses on the early grades, it's true for all of our scholars! We need students in school so they can do their very best learning. We understand that when children are sick, they should stay home. Students should be fever free for 24 hours before coming to school. Other symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and severe cough should be reviewed with medical professionals. If students are not ill, we expect our Hornets will join us daily for learning. We look forward to seeing them every day and learning together!
We have completed our first week of school! Please remember the importance of our scholars being in school everyday. Here are our weekly attendance percentages per grade level:
Kindergarten: 97.2% present
1st grade: 97.8%
2nd grade: 96.8%
3rd grade: 97.8%
4th grade: 97.8%
5th grade: 97.2%
Overall K-5th grade: 95.1% of students were in attendance this week. We have a desired percentage of 93% of our students to be present for the week, which means we met our goal! Together we can and will achieve the goal here at the Hive! Let's go #TEAMHornets!
Calling All Volunteers for the Hidden Gem Half Marathon!
The Hidden Gem Half Marathon is being held for its 5th year on Saturday, 9/7, from 7:00-9:00 am. This is a wonderful community event that runs through the Heather Hill neighborhood. John Yast is a local resident that organizes a water and sports drink refreshment table, in partnership with the Heather Hill staff. The table is located just north of the HH parking lot exit.
Mr. Yast is looking for volunteers to help support the set-up and passing out of beverages. Volunteers should arrive by 6:15 am to avoid road closures. We will stay until the last runners come through, approximately 10:30 am. Volunteers may park in the Heather Hill parking lot. Or, if there is a need to leave earlier, please park on Scott Crescent and take Douglas Avenue to exit north. Older children (4th grade +) are welcome to participate with adult supervision, as well. Please email Mr. Yast at jryast@comcast.net before 9/7 if interested in volunteering. Thank you for considering!
Heather Hill Recess
This week, we are continuing to teach our Hornets the safest ways to play when outside. We asked for some parent feedback before school began and used that feedback to decide, for the time being, to move our Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd graders away from the primary playground to the south field for play. This is an extra layer of precaution while construction is completed on the Detention Basin and the permanent fencing is placed. In addition, volunteers from Flossmoor Village Hall have been and will be present during recess to ensure students stay away from the fencing.
We reviewed two PBIS Cool Tools to help keep students safe. Below are the two tools so that you can discuss and reinforce these with your children at home. Additionally, we are using cones to show students safe boundaries for play with recess equipment. We will continue to get updates from the Village to share as the work on the Basin progresses. If you have questions about the Detention Basin, please feel free to reach out to John Brunke, the Flossmoor Director of Public Works at jbrunke@flossmoor.org. If you have any questions about recess, please feel free to reach out to Principal Humm (chumm@sd161.org) or Assistant Principal Small (csmall@sd161.org). Thank you!
