I am so excited to welcome you to this new school year. My name is Jeni Goebel and I am the new building principal at Maple Grove. While this is my first year as a Grizzly, I have spent time as a building principal in Cedar Rapids and am starting my 20th year as an educator. Prior to coming to Maple Grove, I was the building principal at Nixon Elementary here in the Cedar Rapids School District for 6 years, an instructional coach for 7 years at Nixon, and a classroom teacher (1st, 3rd, and 4th grades) both in Cedar Rapids and down in Houston, Texas. My husband and I are originally from Holland, Michigan and still have family that we visit there multiple times a year. I have 3 daughters who attend Cedar Rapids Schools (a junior at Kennedy, a 6th grader at Harding, and a 4th grader at Nixon), and a sweet pup named Ryder who will be a year old in October. I look forward to learning more about you and your children in the year ahead.

The format of my weekly updates typically includes important information, upcoming events, and I love to share pictures of what is happening at school. Be sure to take some time each week to check your inbox for my newsletter in order to stay connected and see what we're up to here at school. If you have any suggestions of other items you'd like to see in the weekly update, I'd love any feedback to keep improving this mode of communication.

I will close this first letter by saying that my transition to Maple Grove has been so positive in large part to our amazing staff and families. CRCSD asks ALL families to complete a yearly Annual Verification. This verification lets us know that your student will be attending a CRCSD school for the upcoming school year so that we can adequately plan for classroom assignments and transportation needs. This is also when parents can sign all permission slips needed for the year (media release, field trip permission, and technology use) and complete forms to qualify for reduced school fees. Going back-to-school shopping? Suggested school supply lists have been updated for the upcoming school year. Please note that reused or recycled supplies are always welcome. There is no Preschool supply list; each teacher will communicate and share their list with families at the start of the year. Click here to see school supply lists for each grade level.

New this year, the District has started using Teacherlists.com to help make school supply shopping easier for our families. You can find your student’s supply list by selecting their school and then grade level. From there, you can select the logo of the store you would like to purchase the supplies from. Once selected, you will be taken to that store’s online store and all supplies should be loaded into your cart for you. You can also print out each list or translate the list into Spanish.

If you are a returning family to the Cedar Rapids Community School District, you may remember that we would release early on Fridays each week for professional learning for staff. That has changed! The only planned days for early release are the first and last day of school this school year. This is just a friendly reminder that, aside from those two days and any inclement weather days, we plan on your children being at school Monday-Friday, 8:50-3:50 pm.

In addition, there are several days that are designated for staff professional development, so be sure to mark your calendars for those dates. I have linked our district calendars below for quick access. Click on the image of the calendar and you should be redirected to our district website.
