LABOR DAY WEEKEND
There is NO SCHOOL on Friday, September 1 AND Monday, September 4, 2023. Labor Day pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers and is traditionally observed on the first Monday in September. It was created by the labor movement in the late 19th century and became a federal holiday in 1894. Labor Day weekend also symbolizes the end of summer for many Americans and is celebrated with parties, street parades and athletic events.

COMPUTER FEE WAIVER INFORMATION
As you may have heard, in addition to high school students, middle school students will be allowed to take home their devices. This change requires a technology fee of $25 per student or $50 per family. However, this fee will be waived if a Meal Application is filled out for the household. Fees are waived regardless if you qualify or not for the program by simply filling out the application.
Since COVID-19, we have seen a significant drop in applications. This drop puts us at risk for federal funding of Title I services that focuses on early intervention teachers at the elementary level to support students. We hope by waiving the technology fees we will see an increase of applications. All applications are confidential.

SBHS PARKING, BUS PICK UP & DROP OFF
We are ready for the start of the school year! With the construction of the new kitchen and cafeteria, here is some information on the outside of the building.
SBHS Entrance: Students will enter through the Main Entrance like always.
Bus Drop Off and Pick Up: Bus drop off and pick up will be in similar locations. See Map.
Student Parking: We ask students to park in the front parking lot and enter through the main entrance.
Parent Drop Off and Pick Up: That will be in the same spot as before. See Map. Please understand that after you drop off your child, you will be driving through the parking lot as we don’t have a driving lane because of the construction.
ALL Students: We also ask that you do not drive to the back buildings to drop off your student. We want to have all the students enter school through the front doors.

CONGRATULATIONS to the winners of the 9th Grade Open House Passport Scavenger Hunt. Please pick up your prize on Monday in the office:

Welcome to the 2023-24 school year at Sturgis Brown High School. As you embark upon a new school year, we hope that you will establish high expectations for yourself that will be reflected in your academic achievement, your co-curricular involvement and your positive contributions to your school community.
No matter where you go or what you do, you will find certain regulations to guide you. Naturally, there are rules and regulations at Sturgis Brown High School. They are meant for your benefit and those of your classmates. This handbook has been developed to inform students about their school. This handbook is not meant to be an “all inclusive” manual. Common sense and “doing the right thing” always take precedence and are staples of everyday living.
We encourage you to get involved and contribute positively to your classes and activities. Give 100% effort in everything you do and the rewards you seek will become reality. We wish you all a very successful school year.
SBHS AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM
Three teachers are available to help students with homework on TUESDAYS, WEDNESDAYS, and THURSDAYS. Students should arrive by 3:30 PM but can leave whenever they complete their work if they have their own ride. Students who need a late bus pass are required to stay until 5:15 PM.
Snacks are provided. Any questions, contact Mrs. Buchholz at sandra.buchholz@k12.sd.us
BUS INFORMATION
All school bus routes will be established by the Board in consultation with the bus contractor and school administrators. Number of families served by the bus and cost factors will be considered. Routes shall be planned and adjusted to the capacities of available equipment.
Parents have the responsibility of getting students to and from the bus stop in the morning and evening. Students should be at the stop not earlier nor later than five (5) minutes before scheduled bus arrival time.
